Hey all,

Iv recently started a forum, the problem is i need to populate it with posts, (jump start it) for it to start flowing. Lets face it, nobody wants to participate in a dead forum. Whats the best way to go about this problem?
I have been searching for paid forum posting services, is this a valid method? If it does work, can anyone suggest any?

Might be better tho just to have an offer where you let people in for free for a certain period of time to get some genuine content and users in there.

Definitely the way to go I think, Could maybe offer them an incentive, perhaps some kind of freebie if they reach 10-20 posts.

If the freebie is valuable, then people wont have a problem contributing, you just wanna make sure that the what the contribute isnt a load of rubbish to get the freebie.

Be careful if you decide to use a paid forum posting service - I've heard a few horror stories about these.

Alot of the forum posters don't have English as their first language, and you could ruin your forum before you even get started if the posts are spammy looking.

I like Leanne's idea about letting people in for free for a period of time. Seems like a more legitimate way to get genuine conversations flowing.

Hamida is correct that many are bad, but not all are. If you plan to choose a company to work with, check the company out before hand. When a company is not thoroughly vetting those who apply, the end result will be as bad as the horror stories that I am sure many of us have read or heard.

I have heard many myself from past clients (one liner posts, bad grammar, no spelling, lack of capitalization, a post rambled on not even close to something that would qualify as "English", off topic comments that have nothing to do with the site niche, etc.). I remember once sitting on the phone for over an hour listening to a client explain her last issue with the company she had hired, they were "so bad" as she put it that she was ready to give up.

There are clients who need a small boost, some who prefer a monthly little "extra" for their community, some who flip sites and want to get it off the ground before hand and others that after years of being around just want some more content sometimes from a different POV besides their normal regulars that visit.

Totally agree. Incentivize them to join somehow.

I free way of helping your forum is creating a few users yourself and post between yourself so that when visitors do come they don't see a dead forum.. Gradually you can just drop down to just yourself then.

We had the same problem when we started our forum 5 years ago, so each employee created a user and then I had about 4 or 5 of them that I rotated. It worked! I eventually dropped out altogether and now pay a guy to moderate it for us.
