Clearly, **I** Am Naive about How Marketing Forums *Should* Be Used

I know there are countless opinions, approaches and preferences when it comes to participating in a forum. For me, it's conversation - the opportunity to discuss stuff, ask questions, get to know people. I'm not here to showboat, sell anyone anything (unless I post an occasional WSO) nor do I want to become the next WF superstar even though I do market to marketers.

(Side note: The Warrior Forum is such a huge mish-mash of people that I realized long ago that they aren't my market as a whole...and even if they were, I don't think this would change my approach.)

Recently, I've been bewildered by some of the discussions on how to participate in a forum. And LOL...I am not trying to tell anyone how they should participate - do whatcha like as far as I'm concerned. What I am trying to figure out is if I'm alone here.

Some of the discussions have talked about changing your "I" to "you" in forum posts. Bev started an interesting discussion about it and then recently Bev and Kay brought it up again in a thread Steve W. started (It was entitled "Paul Myers Saved My Life Tonight" - which intrigued more than his thread "How to Inject New Life into YOUR Writing").

Anyway, it's not really the "I" vs. "you" thing that has me scratching my chin. It's when people talk about getting more people to view your threads, getting more replies, etc. I've never thought about it. If I post a new thread, I just want the people who are interested to read it...I don't care how many. If I reply to a thread, it's because the topic interests me, annoys me or I just feel like commenting.

Am I alone?

Personally, I don't like threads that read like articles, lectures, etc...and those tend to be "you" focused.

I like to come to the WF as a quick break or downtime and then get back to building my own following (my list, my traffic, etc.) and nurturing the relationship with the following I already have...and yeah...selling them stuff too. :-)

Again, it's just my approach and I'm really just curious about everyone else. What do you look to get out of the WF?

    I'm with you Alice

Any thread reading like a lecture or article I never ever read.

I treat the warrior forum (rightly or wrongly) as a group of friends that I can interact with.

For instance at the moment I'm taking a coffee break from cleaning cupboards, so I'm browsing the forum, reading threads (and starting a couple).

Personally I'm not bothered about the you and I thingy. If a thread amuses me or takes my attention then I'm happy to respond.

Oh well, back to those pesky cupboards

    Well said Alice.
I think there should be a seperate forum
for those that just want to preach, self promote or tell their life story.

The main forum, was always meant to be for discussion.

There are many that approach WF posting as a critical component to there overall online marketing strategy.

I think the referenced thread was more about persuasion techniques, but anyone who's read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" would understand most of the basics discussed there.

Alice, you are not alone. To me, "forum" has always meant a place to discuss -- not a place to self-promote and therefore worry about how many times I use "I" instead of "you", nor whether I'll get numerous replies or views or any other action. Mainly, I tend to attract the lunatic fringe, and I'm very happy interacting with them. When I want to market, I'll go over to the WSO forum where such activities belong.

One other thing, since I'm on my soapbox today.

Some people actually come to this forum to learn things like marketing
tactics, writing tricks, organizational skills and so on.

If all we ever did was sit around here all day starting threads like...

"Hey, whaddaya think about the use of the Amazon module in a Squidoo Lens"

the people who do come here to read specific threads about tactics and
ways to improve their business based on the OP's own experience and
              expertise, will simply stop coming.

There is room at this forum for all kinds of topics.

It doesn't have to be one or the other and when we start to dictate to
people what they should and shouldn't post (outside of the specific rules
that say no spam, politics or religion) then we begin to travel on a very
              slippery slope.

If I see a thread I'm not interested in, guess what?

I don't read it...but I don't try to tell people how to live their lives here
as long as they're not breaking the rules.

              How hard is that?

Problem is, without mentioning any names, we've simply got some very
angry people trolling this forum who have nothing better to do than to
bitch about something somebody posted because they don't feel it's
              appropriate for this forum.

Well newsflash...They don't run this place.

I'm personally fed up with the sanctimonious, self righteous clap trap that
              comes out of some folks.

              Again, read the rules people.

Ron, Les thinks that anybody who talks about their success is just full of
it. He bases this on nothing more than his opinion with absolutely no fact

        Hi Alice,

I use the forum for similar reasons to yourself. I also understand and accept that others use it purely for marketing/promotional purposes.

There have been many hints, even from the highest level, that some of the most successful people come here to trawl for content/ideas from the chatterboxes.

I think there's a clear line between self-promotion and spam, and that it's relatively under control and observed by the majority.

Personally, I think that the blend between people who come here for interaction, and those who come here for promotional reasons, along with everything in between is what gives the forum it's unique and successful 'flavour'.

This is because one can choose to observe and/or participate in discussions about making money, as well as observe and/or participate in making money.

If it only contained one or the other, it would not offer so much. But because it offers both, it creates an often powerful and even explosive mixture - a recipe for fun, education and profit.

EG - if sig files and the WSO were removed, there might be less arguing and negativity. But there would also be many lost opportunities for fun, education and profit and the forum would be a shadow of it's current self. Likewise, if conversation and banter were banned, it would just be another ebook/software directory, and you probably wouldn't have members coming here (and often only here) for decades.

This may not make total sense in regards to like comparisons, but I'd like to imagine each of us as a subway musician with a tin cup ... your content is the guitar, and your sig file is the tin cup. The better you consistently satisfy your audience ... or fellow forum members, with quality content, the better the likelihood they'll toss a coin in your cup ... or visit your sig file destination, and refer others to do the same. As they get to know you, they'll feel even more comfortable and likely to recommend others to check you out ... qualifying your credibility and winning new friends as your reputation grows.

In other words, this is a Marketing Forum ... I see no reason why a member that consistently gives valuable advice in their posts shouldn't enjoy a commensurate number of indirect chances at compensation, if his/her fellow members choose to take that path through their sig. But ... the post content should be completely disconnected from the sig file, as in my short story above.

That's as far as the main discussion forum is concerned ... I've always liked the idea of off topic areas where we can simply amuse and get to know one another on a less serious basis. All work and no play ..

Hope that analogy makes sense ... I've only one coffee in the tank.

            Cheers,

Alice, here is the way I look at it (expecting all those who don't agree to
jump down my throat...thank goodness I have them all on ignore)

I read the main rules for posting on this forum.

I see nothing in those rules that state...

              1. You cannot talk about yourself.
              2. You cannot post tips on how to do things.
              3. You cannot be controversial and provoke heated debate.

As long as there is nothing in the rules that says I can't do these things,
then I will continue to do them.

We no longer have moderators, so if members have a problem with a
thread that a person starts, they should simply report it.

              Problem solved.

I think we have too many people trying to tell too many other people how
they should and shouldn't behave in a forum.

I read the rules...and that's all that matters to me.

For this, some will like me...some will hate me.

              I can handle both.

              ** EDIT **

Here are the forum rules in case anybody wants to dispute what
              I just said.

      Alice,

I tend to be a social person, and treat this place in that way. But only to a certain extent. I learn here and, when I think I can add to a thread, I'll do that.

The exchange of information on a specific topic will occasionally require that the person who has it go into "teaching" mode. That can easily start to read like a lecture or article. I personally enjoy reading those, as long as the value is there.

I do agree that some people focus too much on promotion, rather than discussion. That's not what this part of the board is for, as you say.

Hehehe...long story and off-topic for a marketing forum. But Lunatic Fringe used to be a bar where local Vancouver bands performed. I had some friends play their one night and things got craaaaaaazy! That was about 15 years ago.

I do understand this is a marketing forum and people are going to market here, but there are ways to do it very effectively without commenting in every other post telling everyone how great you are.

Gosh I must not be thinking hard enough about how I'm using the forum. I never even thought about my "I"s or "You"s or self promotion or sharing.

I simply ask for help when I need it, share tips I know others need, and shoot the shit with like-minded or different-minded people.

Methinks everyone's thinking too hard about this. Just be you and do what you do. We can weed out stuff we like and dislike

    Alice
    Hi Alice,
Being new in posting in Forum, I have no idea there is so much details to be considered. When I post, I am just trying to give some value and not tradding on somebody's foot or saying something stupid. Anything else, wether is "you" or "me" or "I" just won't come into it. Hope the last sentence will not offend anybody.

    - Get help getting unstuck when I get stuck
    - Help others get unstuck when they're stuck
    - Get ideas to increase profits
    - Give others ideas to increase profits
    - Get information on avoiding certain types of problems
    - Help others avoid problems.

One thing I noticed about what I just posted is that I come to the WF as a consumer first (to help my businesses) and as a "helper" second.

This is quite the partaaaaaaaay! We have Alice - the victim of bouncer violence, whiskey, ouzo, BIGMike worshippers, hamsters, mankinis, the lunatic fringe. Wow!

Most of the time I come here to learn. I'm in a semi-constant state of humble gratitude for all the cool stuff I've learned here. I'm talking about information that has literally changed my life.

Some of the charm of this board is due to the variety of folks who frequent it. Personally, I enjoy the chaos!

I say use the WF in the way that works best for you (as long as you aren't breaking the TOS or spamming, etc.). We've got a spicy bunch here. I'd like to keep 'em around.

    Cindy

P.S. Hey Alice, if you'd like, we could round up a bunch of rowdy warriors and go beat that bouncer's derriere! Just say the word, OK?

This message board is like any other message board for me. I'm here to chat, make some connections with people, give my input on things, have discussions and conversations.

The ONLY thing different from here and somewhere else is the subject matter the forum is based on. I don't really think about marketing at all here. If anything I just come here to learn some new tricks and techniques, discuss trends and changes in a business we're all working in, and share ideas and information. If I wanted the other side of this, there's always FFA forums and forums overrun with spambots that I can see all the ads I want

Some people should take it easy.

Alice is just stating her personal preference, there's no
    right or wrong.

Personally, as long as you're not spamming, then there's nothing
that forbids you to use and provide value to the forum in
    whichever way you choose to.

Well I can understand your feelings, but I think it's important that we all appreciate that different people will have different approaches to this forum. I think you should focus on what you want to achieve through your participation.

As you said it is a mish-mash and as always with mish-mashes, you never know quite what you are going to get.

I think there is a 'spirit' to the WF and no one member can alter that. People who join get swept up by that spirit. Those who don't fit in evcentually fall aside or get banned.

Just enjoy it, contribute, inspire someone, help someone and you and the WF will be better for it.

When I visit the forum, my first thought is: "I need a break. I wonder what Warriors are talking about today. Any interesting discussions?" and right after that: "Is there someone I can help?"

Well, there's that dreaded letter *I* - so I have to disagree that using it means you are one of the self-promoters.

But some of you have me questioning my approach to posting. I've been accused of "lecturing" in the past and even been told off on another unrelated forum for doing so. That's just my style, so how do you change that?

Someone else said, you jump into teacher mode when the need arises and I guess that's when the "lecturing" kicks in.

I don't believe there is a right or wrong way to communicate - as long as you are here to share your knowledge, help others, seek help when you need it, strike up a few good conversations and enjoy the personalities that abound here, and not strictly to self-promote with every word.

    Sylvia

OMG... did that just sound like a lecture?

Oh, I definitely didn't say that. I think the word *I* is one of the most natural things in conversation. In a thread the other day, Bev suggested we take away the focus from *I* and focus on the forum audience. My personal thought is that takes away from regular ol' discussions and that we don't need to be so concerned about audience here - just talk to people.

Yes, I totally feel lectured at. :-( Boo hoo...it's like being back at Mr. Buttery's class again. At least you didn't throw chalk brushes across the room. He he he he.

No, I don't think I was referring to your statement - didn't someone else make that reference to *I* and self promoters?

So... Alice. Are you just being funny or did it really come across as lecturing?

The "I" point was simply a comment "I" made when Steven was posting about how good Paul Myers' copy is. When I read that I realized threads by Paul are always a "must read" - and when I looked at his thread titles, there was a clear pattern.....the comment I posted was simply:

An example of how Paul approaches his readers can be found looking at thread titles he's posted here. Title focus is "you, your, how to, etc" and there is no "I, me, my" in his titles. ........... it's a subtle example of how Paul approaches his readers. It's why his writing is always worth reading.
That first comment on the "I" vs "you" - was just an observation of Paul's copywriting style, nothing more.

It's the same reason site content that talks about the site visitor's benefits does better than content that is all about the site owner. I think of it as "talking to" people, rather than "talking at" them.

I understand and that's part of what made me realize that some people consider participating on a forum to be copywriting. It was just kind of the whole sequence of events that got me thinking.

On a content site, on a sales page - I agree. On a forum...maybe not so much, at least from my perspective. It goes back to my comment on lecturing.

And my comments have NOTHING to do with commentary about Paul's writing style - since Paul can obviously adjust his writing to fit any situation. I was just talking about what got me to the point of making this post. Sorry if I misrepresented what you said. It wasn't my intention.

Got to say I'm with Tiffany on this one. I haven't really thought about how I use the WF. If I want to sell stuff I have a WSO, if I need help I ask for it. If something interests me I might comment on it.

I understand the sentiment in some of the posts here.

Personally, I almost never read forum posts that look like blog posts. I used to, then I realized that in most cases they weren't for me and just skip over them now. But I don't rail against them, either.
