How Does Clickbank Tracking Actually Work?

I've always known it to be cookie-based, but can't find anything from clickbank themselves. The closest I get is All About HopLink which mentions "Our HopLink tracking system includes cookies". Cookies that last a life-time? 1 month?

Harvey Segal said they use IP tracking now. Can someone dig up a FAQ about this? Very strange considering I've used Clickbank for 5 years

    Have you asked the question in customer services? Not sure if they would tell you though. Other than that I can only add that it works!

    I think it is cookie based, they last 30 days and can get overridden by a new hoplink to the same target.... regards Allen

    I think that's top secret, since they act like adsense. If someone knows how it's operate or function, they might be in a big trouble.

      Supplemental hoplink tracking.

      Tracking hoplinks and affiliate credit with cookies is 100% accurate in the vast majority of cases. For some percentage of customers, however, cookies do not work for tracking. In these rare instances, customers either have cookies turned off in their browser, have utilized new browser security and/or privacy parameters, or have other software installed on their computer that prevents ClickBank from setting a cookie at all. We have developed a new technology that will accurately track hoplinks and award correct affiliate credit for most instances where cookies are not set. This new technology works hand-in-hand with our current cookie-tracking system to ensure proper credit is awarded to referring affiliates.

    Clickbank cookies last for 60 days. But the tracking is never accurate, due to people blocking or clearing cookies. Our experience is that about 15% of sales are not properly tracked by Clickbank.

    Of course, it is pretty much the same with all the affiliate networks - it's just a fact of Internet marketing that you have to live with.

    CB cookie tracking does work. It leaves a cookie for 60 days that will stick with that computer, if they purchase in that time frame you get credited. A couple of things that will break this system:
    1. They have cookies disabled or they're on their mom's computer so they clear cookies to hide the porn sites they were looking at (just an example of one of many reasons that users sometimes clear their cookies)
    2. Many people like to read multiple product reviews, if they click on another affiliate's hoplink for the same product his cookie will override yours.

    That being said for the vast majority of people your cookie will still be there and you will get credit for sale; like all business there is a margin of error and pretty much every affiliate program uses a similar cookie based method so you're not going to do better anywhere else
