How to buy a domain name back for cheap?

Hi there,

I posted another thread a while ago, see here: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...eone-else.html

The domain name in question is now listed on a site called Sedo and I have made an offer to buy it back. I can't now see from the whois database who owns it. Up until about 3 weeks ago it was Intrust Domains, but now the information is blocked. Would they have sold it on someone else?

I can almost guarantee that the domain name is only of interest to my client. She is an author and there is no one else with her name. It is very unique. She dominates the first 20 pages of Google for her first name (I got bored of looking after that!)

So the only person that is interested in buying it will be her (through me). What would anyone suggest be the best tactics? I have gone in with a starting offer of $100. No response as yet.

Any experts out there who can give a bit of advice?

    As far as I know, Sedo is usually used for parking unused domains.

    Maybe there's still hope if you haven't seen a switch in the IP address of the domain itself.

    Getting a lawyer, as advised by others in the previous thread seems like the only viable option right now.

    The longer you delay action, more difficult it will become to get back the domain.

      Thanks Indihow. How can I tell if the IP address is the same though and what does this mean even if it is?

      The problem is that at the moment I have no idea who owns it so wouldn't be able to set the terrier on them even if I wanted to. How can I find this out?

        From reading your other thread, the new owner isn't at fault here. If you go after anyone, go after the registrar who failed to automatically renew it. However, I don't think you'll have any luck there, either - registrars are notorious for not responding to change of ownership issues. If a lawyer is being honest with you, he or she will tell you there's no recourse against the new owner - they bought the name in the open market, in good faith.

        If you can't get the current owner to respond to you, I don't think there's much you can do. I don't understand why they wouldn't try to sell it back to you if the name is so unique to her - there really isn't much reason to buy it otherwise.

        Contact Sedo and find out if someone who has listed a domain name for sale is required to respond to an offer. If they are, you might be able to get Sedo to force communication.

    If she dominates the first several pages of Google for her name, there are plenty of people who would be interested in buying it.

    Someone who built my father's site, a well known gunsmith, had the domain name for his site and let it expire. It was bought up immediately. I had to buy another domain and backlink and outrank him to get my father's traffic back. It worked, and he finally gave up and just parked it, but people look for domains that already had a lot of traffic.

      Agreed - Just because this author is the only one with that name doesn't mean that she is the only one that would be interested. It's pretty obvious that if this person sells a lot of books or generates a large following, that any marketer worth their weight would have done the research and easily seen this.

      Just pray that she's horrible at her craft and maybe you can help her buy it back if it's just parked or in limbo for a while.

          Nothing yet. Not sure where to go from here. The contact details that I have there is no response from. I have been in contact with someone from Intrust Domains, but they say that it isn't under their registry, even though it is on Whois with their name on it.

          We don't mind paying to get it back. We just can't get any contact with anyone.

          They are currently using it for advertising. So obviously making money from this. She is not that well known an author. Only in niche circles. Her monthly web stats are by no means off the scale!

          I think we are very stuck with this one. Very frustrating.

    Ok this may or may not work but try sending an email to admin [at] domainname [dot] com and sale(s) [at] domainname [dot] com and see if you can get in touch with the owner of the domain this way... you never know until you try =P

    Clojo: The information I sent to you yesterday says the registrar is domainevent.ca not intrustdomains.com. The email address they are using is based on intrustdomains.com, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are associated with intrustdomains.com in any other way.

    You have their full name.
    You have their full mailing address.
    You have their two different phone numbers.
    You have their email address.
    You have their Sedo.com listing.
    You have a list of dozens of other domains they own.

    With all of this information, you can surely communicate with them in multiple ways. Call them. Leave a message stating you're interested in buying one of their domain names (don't mention which). Make a better offer at Sedo.com. Unfortunately, the amount you first offered is probably not enough for them to pay any attention. They have to pay a $50 fee plus $10 of the sale. That leaves them around $40.

      Although I have tried to contact him on many occasions, but have got nowhere. The address that is given is the same one as on the intrust website and the phone numbers continually go to voicemail which is never responded too.

      I have had no response from numerous emails too.

      I will increase my bid on sedo and will look up the other domains that he owns as you suggest. Thank you very much for your help.

      EDIT: He also doesn't get very good press when Googled, so it doesn't look good. I just can't imagine this domain name is any value to him. He certainly won't be getting much from ads, as anyone googling my client will get her other domain name.

        The lack of response may indicate the owner doesn't want to sell.

        I would change my SEDO bid to the maximum I was willing to pay - if the owner does not respond to any contacts it's all you can do.
