Have You Ever Bought A Website and How Did It Work Out?

I was looking through flippa.com at websites for sale and it is amazing some of the prices they go for. It got me wondering if anyone has actually paid say $3000 to $20,000 for a built website and did it give them a return or was it a bad investment.

I'd love to hear your experiences.

I once bought a PR6 domain name and then it dropped to PR N/A the next week... sure does pay to do your research lol!

Luckily I am a little wiser these days

Ouch, did the person pull all the backlinks somehow to make it drop like that?

I never spent that much but I've bought a few websites for a few hundred dollars from Flippa and it ended up being a complete waste of money.

Essentially the revenue claims on a lot of these lower earning websites, $20-$100 a month, are complete BS and so far have been a complete waste of money.

I feel as though websites in the range you're looking with a longer and more productive revenue track record are far more legit though and in a lot of cases very worthy investments.

You're right you can really pick up some excellent deals for super cheap. For example you could pick up a site making $1000 a month for like $10,000 and also invest in SEO services and such to increase traffic and revenue and make back your money even faster than 10 months.

I'd highly recommend PMing people and even browsing auctions that didn't sell and asking if they are still interested in selling.

Whether it will be a good investment or not is completely dependent on your personal research and discussions with the site owners. Make sure you think of and ask every conceivable question to ensure you are getting the exact deal you think you're getting.

    Good luck.

I bought such a site a year ago. In my case it worked out very well, but I have heard of cases where things have not gone so well. As well as investing your money, you need to put in a lot of time checking out the niche trends, the seller, and of course the site itself.

@ebrg how long did it take you to recoup the money spent on the purchase price?

It's been years since I bought a turnkey website, but when I did, it was primarily for the domain name, not the website and the revenues, I haven't bought anything at Flippa lately because I haven't seen a domain name that was worth buying.

In the current market, do your due diligence before buying. Verify gross earnings and net earnings, find out where the money comes from and make sure none of that will be impacted by the sale.

I bought a fully developed product with a sales page and Clickbank account for $300 on Ebay years ago...

It currently brings in just under $300 each month. The only thing I've done to the site is a recently added video reference for the product.

But I suspect that I just got lucky...

That was a great buy for you for sure. Most selling their sites say no work is needed at all, which I have doubted. Really if no work was needed at all why sell?

I think the trick is to look for those sites that have been around longer than a few months....but the prices on Flippa are still quite attractive. If you think about bricks and mortar businesses, you can often pay 3 to 5 times yearly net. On Flippa you are normally paying about 6 times MONTHLY net. It's a huge difference (assuming you don't get ripped off). Regards Allen
