Buying .com and .org domain cheap question.

Hi warrior,

I recently want to create many sites under one hosting.
I am targeting .com and .org domain names.

When I buy through the web hosting company, the price is USD 12++ per

year.

Is there anyway, i can purchase cheaper? Perhaps purchase them without

going through web hosting company.

I am not sure here..

Thanks.

Just in case you didn't know this, Stan: never register a domain-name where you're hosting it. Two different places are needed: a registrar and a host.

Different people have different opinions about which registrars and which hosts are "the best". And their differences of opinion don't matter very much, for the most part. As long as you don't register the name(s) where you're hosting: that does matter.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard that one before. I have at least a few important websites that are registered with my host (only 10 bucks for a year and it has auto renew). Can you explain why this isn't a good thing? What can happen that I should worry about? You have me really nervous all of the sudden. Haha.

It matters only if/when something goes wrong.

If your host isn't also your registrar, then in the event of any accident/problem, if anything ever goes wrong with your hosting, you're in control, not them. And can avoid nightmares, disasters, long delays and entirely unexpected "ransom demands".

There's a large number of horror stories of hosting/registration/control disasters scattered about the forum, almost all of which could have been avoided by registering and hosting in two different places.

Brad expresses it very well, with several well-known examples, in this post.

It's one of those issues which so many people look at and think to themselves "Eew, well, those are all other people: it wouldn't ever happen to me". Until someone on one of their lists reports them, even with absolutely no justification at all, to GoDaddy for "spamming" and their website disappears and GoDaddy (in accordance with its TOS which few people have ever read all the way through at the time they registered the domain) suddenly wants hundreds of dollars to release the domain so they can get it back online somewhere else.

The point is that "whether something goes wrong" may not be within your own control - it can be just one of those pretty random things that Winston Churchill called "events".

Can I know the actual reason why?
Does they charge us expensive for the work for them to register one for us? Am I right? THanks.

Never buy your domains from your host. Keep them separate and the host can never hold your domains hostage should a problem arise. I use namecheap and Godaddy for domains.

    For Godaddy discounts, go here
    GoDaddy Discount Codes - Page 372 - NamePros.com
That's the last page of a very long thread and most recent Godaddy codes.

Yeah, use Namecheap or combine Godaddy with coupon codes, or apply for an account at Resellerclub.

I know it is an obvious one but I always use NameCheap and I have a LOT of domains.

They always have money off coupons too to save and ends up around $9 a domain for .com - not sure if that is enough of a saving for you?

Obviously this is for new domains only and you may already know of it but hopefully it gives you another option to look at.

The problem with Yahoo is don't they charge an arm and a leg when it comes time to renew?

You can sometimes, if somewhere like GoDaddy or NameCheap has a special offer on (typically temporary, sometimes "to attract new customers", and available with a discount code for 1 domain only) ... or something like that.

But normally, I think you'd be looking at typically around $7/$8 as the "entry-level price" for a .com/.org, from most places.

If it's of interest, you can buy a .info domain-name for $1 from GoDaddy. They're no worse for SEO than any other top-level domain (though I appreciate there might be other, non-SEO-related reasons why you might want a .com).

If money's an issue, there's perfectly good, perfectly professional, perfectly reliable free hosting available at byethost.com (and they don't - unlike some places - put any advertising button of their own on your site), and nobody looking at it, or investigating it at any sites like whohosts.com, has any way of knowing that it's free hosting, so it "looks the part".

Alexa is right, but she forgot to mention TWO things!

    1. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a domain to work unless it is bought with the host, or YOU set it! If you buy it at the host, you may NEVER know if you can set it!
    2. If you buy it at the host, THEY will likely be the tech contact, and maybe even the OWNER. THAT means THEY may practically OWN it!

Unless you can trust them, it is best to avoid the issue!

Domain and hosting are 2 different thing. You can purchase domain from registrar like Namecheap.com, GoDaddy.com and then point the DNS (Domain Name Server) to your hosting. So, no problem to have tons of domain under 1 hosting.

You can always search for coupon to apply for namecheap. Every month Namecheap release the coupon code and you can get a .com domain around $8.9.

I am using Namecheap because of their great support, i.e. live chat / phone. Try to avoid those cheap registrar without live chat / phone. Domain and hosting are essential for the business. So, you will want to be able to get support whenever there is problem.

    Cheers,
    MingJong
