When you set up the PayPal "buy now" button within "merchant services --> buy now button" you make sure to send them to a specific URL "after successful checkout" and on that URL you can have the download. Either via a link on a "Thank You" page or simply a .zip file hosted on your server.

You can do this via the "Step 3: customize advanced features" for your buy now button.

    Best,
    Shane

P.S. - If you host a .zip file on your server, it won't show up in search engines and makes it harder for people to steal your ebook. It would be something like: YourDomain.com/files/YourProduct.zip -- And you would put that as the URL to send your buyers to after successful checkout.

I host my files on my own servers, therefore I don't use any free host servers and thus I can't recommend any... But I'm sure some Warriors here will chime in an recommend some for you.

If you need to host a .zip file for free, you can use sites.google.com it's free & you can hotlink to the zip, so the customer will only see a download prompt. Make sure to set your Google Sites to public.

A question on setup paypal button. Will this also automatically send email to buyer to inform them the download link in case they missed thankyou page (or close the page by accident before they download)?

No it would not. You would need to use PayPal IPN and a script running on your server or a service like e-junkie.

You can do what is call a re-direct in Paypal under Merchant Services > Add to Cart Button > fill out all info you need too, then head down to > Customize checkout pages tab > and fill out the URL for (Take customers to this URL when they cancel their checkout) its that simple.. Example: https://www.mystore.com/success

    Best of luck
    Geo.

E-junkie Shopping Cart for selling downloads & tangible goods

    Worked pretty well for me.

Look into DLGuard or if that is to expensive for you, or you only need PayPal support, look at this one.

I haven't looked at that one specifically, but the free self-hosted IPN scripts frequently have massive security problems that you can't see or fix unless you're basically an IT security professional. I've never seen one that didn't need at least some editing to prevent people familiar with it from searching out the footprint on Google and hosing up your system.

I just happen to be a professional programmer and work with server and site security. I can tell you right now you don't know "exactly" what you are talking about, except on a limited basis when it comes to the free scripts you have looked at.

Some free scripts are written by hobby programmers that don't have security in mind. Please don't lump the professional programmers products in with them. It's not right.

Good for you. The OP is not. Expecting him to evaluate, select, install, and configure a self-hosted script is irresponsible.

But hey, we programmers are known for that, aren't we? Not our problem. After all, you only had to sudo kill `cat /tmp/.X0-lock` anyway, and who doesn't know that?

I think you selected a bad example. What in the world would someone with a hosted site have to worry about X? Running Linux as a desktop? Maybe. Oh my...

LOL! You made my day. With your type of thinking... Nobody should buy anything. <insert face palm here>

You can always pay to have a script installed. In fact many script sellers offer install services. Or very good instructions that most people with a 8th grade education can follow. Still lovin your posts though.

Nope. And those of us who understand precisely why I selected that example are laughing at you.

Then please do fill me in why anyone running a PHP script would have to kill X??? Give me a good explanation and I'll take my bad example back.

now if you would have said something like kill an infinite loop, I may have bought that.

DPD Shopping Cart is an alternative to eJunkie. They're both about the same price. DPD allows a 1 month free trial so you can earn a bit before the bill comes.

I use e-junkie.com as well. It's easy to use and you can have as many ebooks on the same account. The process is automated and you can even have affiliates promoting your book.

If you have a WordPress site and wanting to do a semi-secure download of the ebook, and set up everything on the cheap (ie: free), then have a look into a new free WP plugin called "paid downloads"

WordPress › Paid Downloads « WordPress Plugins

    It performs two functions:

    1. Creating the Paypal button (although I prefer to do this myself)
    2. Creating a unique, temporary download link for the ebook/product.

I've used it on one of my sites (with a few tweaks) and it works very well if you ensure that you set up the Paypal side correctly.
