Adobe Illustrator is mainly a graphics software that creates vector graphics. Most designers use AI to create logos, illustrations or artwork for high-resolution production.

As a designer myself, I'd say learning AI is a steep learning curve. I haven't fully transitioned myself from my favorite vector software, i.e. Freehand to Illustrator yet.

Anyway, it would probably be easier to learn Photoshop and start designing sales pages from there. After you're done with the mockup, you can get the HTML done by freelancers. They will usually slice the mockup in Adobe Dreamweaver, or something similar.

    Hope that helps.

I prefer photoshop for layouts, and if I need to add any vector graphics I just import from AI

with photoshop I just get a general layout, copy it exactly in CSS and then cut out the images and save them as PNGs with transparency

pretty simple once you know css

My question is why? There are 5 wordpress themes out that do all that sales page stuff for you in seconds.

        Or outsource it for $50

Either way it's not worth your time.

        My 3 cents,

I use Photoshop to make my graphics. I use Nvu to design HTML sales pages, or else I'll download a WP or Joomla template and change the graphics slightly to make it unique.

I'm probably a massive minority here, but I actually use Macromedia Fireworks. It is perhaps a little old hat, but I know it well and it works great.

AI is not necessary for sales pages. Creating your own graphics with it is unnecessary and will eat away your time.

Use sales page templates. And use stock graphics, they cost 1 or 2 bucks each.

I do think it's important to learn how to create/edit images and create/edit html. This will help you make professional looking websites/sales pages. The software that you choose to use is not that important IMO. I use photoshop. I've built entire website layouts in photoshop, saved them as pngs/jpgs/etc. Then imported them into fireworks to section it into tables/cells/etc. This works for me. Another person would go at it from a totally different angle.

Over the past few years I've saved websites and squeeze pages to my hard drive. If I want to create one I go through the various pages to get the idea juices flowing to come up with a concept for my new one.

If you are comfortable using AI instead of Photoshop that's fine. It would also be a good idea to learn photoshop for basic image manipulation, etc.
