Can You Help Me Name My Site? Please...

Hi Everyone:

I am in need of advice/suggestions.

I'm ready to take action! It's been almost 11 years since I first became interested in IM and all that time, I've done nothing but lurk, buy products and sit around watching other people do what I want to do...start an online business. I'm so envious AND proud of those of you who have just started your businesses.

Talk about wasted time.

I'm done with information overload/analysis paralysis and shiny object syndrome. I'm ready to get to work! So far, I've developed a business plan, have some funds set aside to get my domain, hosting and an auto-responder and have even started writing my ebook. But...

One hold up...I'm stuck on naming my site. I can't really move forward until I get this out of the way. If you don't mind...I would really appreciate any suggestions on naming a site. Here are the basics of the site:

- It will be an informational blog on recruiting info for high school girls basketball players.
- I want to brand it and have something along the lines of creating an onscreen personality to write my postings under...something like "Hardwood Diva". Which is already taken...LOL.
- I can't include NCAA in my domain name.
- Last, I won't be offering recruiting services, only information about the recruiting process. I will monetize with my ebook and hopefully advertising and Google Adsense.

I really appreciate your help on this. I'm at a loss but I want to stop lurking and reading and get moving into this exciting next phase of my life.

Happy Earnings everyone and thank you again!

I think it's important to get the keyword phrase in the domain name.

    I would grab:
    highschoolgirlsbasketball.net (it's available)

    high school girls basketball
    60,500 broad monthly searches
    480 exact monthly searches

    hsgirlsbasketball.com is also available
    Signature

Nothing to see here folks.....move along.

Just name it something without all the thinking! A .com at GoDaddy costs $8, if you have a coupon code. If you buy the wrong domain name, spend another $8 and get the right one. Speed in this game is more important than perfection.

DribblingDiva comes to mind, and the .com is available.

      Nice one!

To the OP: Stick with .com, no .net. Trust me. Avoid domain names with more than two words. Don't worry about exact matches. This is a serious endeavor, so get a good brand name you simply like, period. You can always create a portal subdomain, or several subdomain blogs, targeting different long-tail keywords.

That reminds me of being on the basketball team and the coach said to us. "HUMPH, you guys are a bunch of sissies. Do ya wanna be in the NBA or the WNBA?"

I said "I am sorry sir. That comment is very insulting to women." He started yelling profanity at the top of his voice.

The next day the coach was sent away. Before he did 'resign'. He told us that he only coaches winners. Also, that sissies like me where the reason we did not win any games.

He is a great name DUNKDIZ.com

Try to have the keyword that your targeting in the url. And then go from there, it doesn't matter how great your site is, if you can't get it in the top 10 it might as well not exist.

Awesome advice...thank you all so much. You are right...I need to stop thinking and over analyzing so much. I can't believe I missed the obvious...highschoolgirlsbasketball.net...and I like DribblingDiva.com too. You guys are the best.

Absolutly love the story about the coach yelling..."Do ya wanna be in the NBA or the WNBA?" Sounds like the makings of a great comedy! I'm with you, I'm a sissy too...I have not one athletic bone in my body...thankfully my daughter didn't take after me and nabbed a scholarship to a small school. Thanks for sharing!

honestly, when I look for a domain name, there are a few things I take into consideration.

-How much traffic the keyword gets monthly
-How much competition you're going against in that keyword
-How relevant it is towards your prospect

say for example, if I would a guide on how to build solar panels. Some people will go for the domain howtobuildsolarpanels. com. That sound like a good idea but you need to keep in ind that not everyone who writes the term "how to build solar panels" are looking to buy an ebook.

Now if you go for something such as buildsolarpanelguide. com, then you might not have as much traffic than the latter BUT its gonna convert better because people who are searching for the term "build solar panel guide" are already one step closer in the buying phase. They are looking for a guide therefore they are willing to spend money.

I cant tell you which domain to buy since im pretty much clueless about your niche and I didnt research or anything (lol sry!) but I hope my advice helps.

Thank you all again for the great advice! I really appreciate your help on this.

I hope to soon be reporting to everyone that I've gotten my site up and hopefully before the end of the year have some income coming in.

Love dunknews.com. I really really like hoopgirrls.com...unfortunately ESPN has a site called hoopgurlz.com and I heard they shut someone down for trying to use anything close to that. I think it's crazy, especially if the name is available but I will try to not tick of ESPN LOL. Go figure.

Thank you DavidTT, Suzanne, Psst, JCruz, seobro, Kecia, Absolutelee and Weblink29. You guys rock!

Name it after a keyword or if you arent going for one specific keyword name something short so that people will be able to revisit your site again.

    EastWest97 -

Brad here. Sounds like a great concept. You can check out the web site domain names at a bunch of services.

My contribution is more technical. Once you get the site name nailed down be sure to consider capturing any of the alternative spellings and spacings. Spellwizzdotcom could be set up as spell_wizz dot com or spellingwisdot com.

You get the idea. I listened to an Internet Business Mastery dot com pod cast -- free -- where Jay and Sterling were interviewing a guy who had a web site and spelled the last word "uniquely" with a z rather than s. Jay and Sterling checked the site out on the show and immediately suggested capturing the alternative spellings.

You can set up redirects to the correct site and save yourself some lost inquiries. While google will do some spelling and alternative searches - this will ensure you get all those dyslexic spellers like me ;-)

Best of luck - 11 years and a realization of the next step - I expect this is exciting and a little like fast forward. Sounds like you have some sound concepts and approach. Best of luck !

    Cheers !

I thought that this was going to be another "name my hot dog cart business" but this is an honest to goodness awesome post!

You have a lot of good info here now it's up to you to take action. As you can see, there are a lot of people willing to help and I think that you have a great idea. There's no doubt that this is something that you're passionate about, which should make it a lot easier than creating a site about hemmoroids or yeast infection.

I do like the .net domains give the basketball hook.

Now get something up there, post it to your sig and let everyone see. Don't be askeered! Take action... you've spent way too much time sitting on the bench

    Dear Bretski and Brad789:

Thank you soooo much for your input. You are right, I have wasted way too much time and I do plan on seeing this through. With wonderful people like those in the WF I know I can't go wrong. Also...I didn't even think about the .net versus the .com....again, another obvious twist on tying in the basketball theme. You guys are geniuses! And I mean that for everyone here who has commented. I truly appreciate your input!

    Hugs,

Ok, I'm starting to see why you have not achieved much in the past 11 years. The name of your site is not going to make or break you - just choose something and move along. Little decisions like this don't need to be turned into big deals when they really aren't - it will only slow down your progress.

If two years ago I asked people to come up with a name for my new social networking site and they suggested words like 'Twitter' or 'Facebook' I would have laughed in their face. Look at them now.

No one can predict how successful a name will be. The product and/or service behind that name is much more important. Don't make me come around there and kick you up the... Choose one and move on.

dunkgirls.com or something. Go for an acronym. They work well but are difficult to get. I just launched a couple of my websites, and it took me more time figuring out the name than writing the htmls. :<

Forget the fancy stuff, just get a name that includes your most desired phrase to rank for, based on your keyword research.

        Hi there,

I'm not sure if having "diva" in the name is such a good idea, since that's usually not what comes to mind when I'm about to do a search for high school girls basketball info. Just another point of view from a regular consumer, not an IM pro

Many of the other suggestions are really good though. It'd probably be a good idea to invest in a good keyword research program as well, so you'll have all the right stats at your disposal.

Keep being focused and you will do well!
