crappy conversion rate

I've promoted some supplements on my health site and so far the conversion rate is a joke!

763 clicks for 3 orders and about $2 per order.

0.40% conversion.

Is this really a joke and should I change? The commission rates are about 10-12%, quite normal for health supplements.

But it seems that people are interested and then just don't order when it comes to the crunch.

Instead, maybe I should just change to Amazon. It seems to be a trade off between having a well-known affiliate where people feel safe with low commissions (6-8%) or a higher commission rate (15-20%) from less well-known suppliers, which probably have a low conversion rate.

Any ideas?

Without a history and more data, that really does not seem out of line for untargeted traffic. How are you promoting your products?

      Really?

I'm churning out articles, non-stop. The traffic I get is targeted I think, because I'm getting plenty of signups. I had a traffic issue not so long ago, so my traffic is just getting back to reasonable levels now.

As this is only vitamins and has low commissions, I'm mainly promoting them just through static affiliate links on my site.

I guess I could include them in my autoresponders too, but I kind of save my autoresponder promotions for CB products as they have much better commissions mainly.

I think you just need to be selling more profitable products

Think if you made $20 or $40 per sale....

Agreed. I wouldn't be here posting messages complaining

Just that the more profitable health products are a bit spammy and I'm not sure I'd want them.

I'll have to look harder to find more high quality profitable products. I'm sure it can be done.

Yes, really. The conversion rate appears consistent with untargeted traffic. From your description of having affiliate links, you really should not be surprised. Perhaps consider by providing product-specific information in your articles as well as directed placement of articles within niche publications, you will increase conversions.

I've been submitting my articles too but started doing it late.

So I'll do 3 things here:

          1. test with Google Website Optimizer AB testing.
          2. submit more product oriented articles
          3. work harder on selling more profitable products

          Thanks for your replies all

Your not alone on the crappy conversion rates JRemington. I am in such a slump it is rediculous. I have a website that gets around 400 unique visitors everyday and I don't make ANY conversions.

I would highly appreciate it if someone could take a look at my website and tell me where im screwing up! Someone? Anyone? Please? >>>I am desperate<<<

I have put in 6 months of straight up work getting a bunch of my websites to the top of google and still no money.

I am starting to lose hope in my niche websites.

Hey I think your sites are great. I'm a snowboarder too

You need to capture the email addresses of your visitors. Make it irresistible, free and compelling enough that a chick with thunderthighs will just instantly sign up for your newsletters.

Give them a free starters ebook and imagine what you would have wanted with big chunky thighs, not knowing where to start.

Start proposing some affiliate offers in your autoresponders after a few messages.

Can you start testing out some things on your page to increase conversions? Typically you need about 1,000 visitors before you get a solid answer as to which thing you are testing will be the better converter, but it might be worth looking at. I use Google Website Optimizer AB testing.

Are you interrupting sales or are you spurring on sales for this product? In other words, are people coming to your site because they type in [x supplement product] or are they coming in with general queries like, "build more muscle"? If they're coming in with the latter I'd recommend getting as many people as possible onto your autoresponder and then selling your recommendations for products from that.

If people are coming in blindly to the sale they need a lot more nurturing and perhaps the ones who aren't very interested in supplementation will filter themselves off the list, while the ones who are will be more likely to buy.

Half a percent isn't terrible JR. Some targeted campaigns only convert at 1%.

Something you said struck me as interesting, though. You said you don't want to go with any health offers that seem spammy. What do you mean by that?

Reason I ask is because I've known campaigns that failed because the marketer chose "pretty" landers over the "ugly" ones. Problem is, those hard sell/ugly landers usually convert the best... subtlety isn't a virtue online.

But if your copy or design isn't killing your conversions, then your traffic has to be the problem. Not all keywords are buyer phrases, but I'm sure you know that already.
