Hey Web Designers: What do you want from me?

What do you need to see, or to ask, to determine how much you'd charge to design a website? This is a combination of a searchable directory open to the public and a private membership site. Think Groupon meets rentacoder.

Dee, look for designers under Warriors For Hire. Also check designers in the WSO and Classified sections. For $5 you can actually place an ad in the Wanted section of Warriors for hire. I've gotten some great work done at very reasonable prices right on this forum. Good luck.

Just a thought, but you could also look into fiver.com
They may not be able to turn out a fantastic site for 5 bucks, but i'm sure they would be up for a little discussion regarding it.

I think you should hire a web designer or consult with any web design company or firm

You can go to a freelacing site (i use scriptlance.com) and post details about your project and people will bid with what they think is a reasonable price to work on your project, and this way you will get a rough estimate of what your project might cost

I would post the project on Elance or scriptlance and gets bids, check references, etc.

I would start by writing out exactly what you need the site to do. Try to type out every detail you can think of. The better you describe what you are looking for the better the programmer will be able to help you. I would also suggest making a mockup website layout for the designer to show them how you want them to make it look or lay it out in photoshop if you have the ability to do so.

The clearer you can relay how you want the website to look and function up front the less it will cost you in redesigns.

    Just my $.02

Nothing to see here folks.....move along.

Deepower, if you're doing something that hasn't been done before then this would be much more than a simple design, what you are talking about is development of a web app. If you are not into using wordpress as you stated you may not be, then this would have to be a custom job using RoR (ruby on rails) or something similar that allows for complete control over the code.

You could use a highly customized wordpress theme too though.

You mention directory and membership, both of those things are offered as wordpress plugins so if it is simply that then I would use wordpress and those plugins.

You have to remember Groupon and Rent a Coder are multi billion dollar companies with a tremendous amount of resources. Both of those websites are highly customized and have thousands of hours of development time in them.

  • The more detailed the spec, the better.

Unless your site is a fully functioning web app, you are probably as well to consider sticking with an existing CMS like WordPress -they bring a lot to the table.
