Don't worry about your list right now. Your list is built buy driving traffic to your website and then having people opt-into your page. You build a relationship with that list by sending targetting and informative automated emails to the leads that have opted into your site.

Personally from what your situation sounds like, I would focus on starting to brand yourself, rather than just drive people to an affiliate link. People are way more likely to sign up for your business if they know who YOU are, and trust YOU, and you establish yourself as a leader who can help them succeeed. This what list building is all about. People don't want products as much as they want to work with somebody who can help them succeed and they trust.

Try to do something to make your website unique. Even putting your picture up there will help.

The list is important but that importance is actually waning as marketing tactics and technology advance. It's still an incredibly profitable vehicle, but I'd advise you to broaden up a bit and take a look at some more options as you start out.

I would advise creating some sort of blog or authoritative informational website pertaining to the niche you plan to enter. The website itself can be monetized as well as provide you with streams of traffic from which to build your list. Build authority on the site, gain a readership, build a list...

The next step is then to use that list to launch a community or a forum for the site itself. The whole catch-22 of community building (why join if the community is empty?) is then thwarted and you have just built yourself a very nice (and potentially viral) stream of traffic off of the site and its community.

Just keep chaining together momentum to build up.

If you want to start driving traffic immediately, you can begin to use article marketing. When I started using this technique, my website traffic took off.

Make sure you do your keyword research using free tools such as what Google offers. You want to create keyword focused articles, so you will be attracting targeted traffic.
