Can you buy a domain right after it's expiration date ?

Hi guys,

In the last 2 months and when i was doing some market research i found a site that was ranking high in the search engines for a very decent term,

I checked it using who.is and i found that it's gonna expire on the 26th of jun, i wasn't expecting it to get expired and i thought that he owner will renew it sooner or later,

but to my surprise he didn't yet, the expiration date is still 2011-06-26 and the 26 of jun is only a couple of days away

So i was wondering if i can snap it right after it expires ? I've never done something like that, can you advise me on it's possibility and how can i do that ?

shall i go to a normal domain registrar and try to register it after the expiration date ?

Thanks a lot and have a great day
Hamza.

    Absolutely hamza!

When a domain expires, you can register it.

Well not quite. It has to go into redemption for a period after its been expired. After that it drops and that is when you can buy the domain.

You can buy the domain from the owner at anytime but they'll probably try to charge you more for it. If you want to go that route use a whois tool to find out who the owner is and contact them direct. You never know you might get lucky.

    Hope that helps

You cannot buy the domain right after expiration.

To protect the registrants, ICANN came up with several "periods" before the domain is released to be registered by a new registrant.

    >Expiration Date
    >0-45 days after Expiration Date = Auto Renew Grace Period
    >0-30 days after Auto Renew Grace Period = Redemption Grace Period
    >0-5 days after Redemption Grace Period = Pending Delete
    >After 5 days, domain released and available to be registered

If that domain might be a highly sought-after, you might want to use a service like NameJet to help you snatch it up.

Thanks for the explanation, that's new for me,

so practically speaking i can buy a domain after 80 days of the expiration date if it wasn't renewed right ?

      Thanks

Yes, but if you have competition who also want the same domain name, then you have a better chance if you use a service like NameJet.

Yeah I was looking to register a Domain name but GoDaddy claims it's coming up to registration time on it. My one friend told me he thought GoDaddy CyberSquats on it and when they see I want it they name their own price

Bear in mind also that once the domain 'drops' the pr disappears back to zero!

I know, I'm interested in the domain itself, it's an exact match for a highly searched term ...

Here's a hint: If you look at the WHOIS info and see "pending delete", it will become available in exactly 5 days. You just don't know if others are waiting to pounce on it too. If it's important enough, use NameJet to backorder it. They will attempt to snap it up for you the moment it becomes available.

You can read more about the process here: Domain Name Aftermarket - NameJet.com

The problem for individuals wanting to pick up an expired domain is that you don't know exactly when the the domain will "drop". Major players use sophisticated technology to "catch" the drop before anyone else. If you are to have a chance, you have to use domain aftermarket services to "catch the drop" before anyone else.

If the exact-match domain name you found is as good as you say, then most likely it's already on someone else's radar as well. There are people out there that do this for a living.
