Personally I build websites around niches and not around specific products so yes I review more than one product per website. I also include articles and blog posts to provide a balance of content - Google does not like "thin" sites packed full of affiliate reviews.

I don't spend too much time worrying about keyword research when I start writing a review, I just use keywords that I would use when thinking about such a product, then when the traffic starts coming in I look to see what I'm ranking for and optimise the reviews retrospectively.

I use free traffic methods such as articles, blog comments and blog carnivals to build natural backlinks - no software spam exercises for me

It is possible to build set and forget sites, but I like to have a smaller number of sites that I add content to regularly rather than hundreds of one or two page sites. I find the more often you add fresh content the better the rankings over time.

    HTH

p.s. I built a theme especially for Amazon review sites - the link is in my signature

You know to be completely honest in my experience I've found the opposite to be true. Perhaps my experience is the exception not the rule, I don't know. - heck nobody knows with Google.

Why spend your time working on a large site, to have Google knock it down when they want?

There is a good case for both type of sites.

        So true.

If you buy either phpZon or phpBay (I bought both, but only use phpZon.), you get access to a private members forum. The help over there is incredible. People are actually sharing working ideas. Probably because the forum is not indexed in Google.

One member there with the nick OneLung has a "Thin Site Master Course". One for eBay, and one for Amazon (in Beta). This is his site about it : onelungthin.com

Good Amazon review theme: Thesis (It's not a review theme, but I use it for my reviews)

I promote one product on some sites, on others I promote a number of related products.

If I am promoting more than one product I look for a group of products that all get searches (about 4-7 products). I like at least one of the products (often my top rated product) to get at least 1000 searches.

The best way I've found to get sites to page 1 of Google is proper on page optimization, and backlinks.

Once you get your site to page one for your keywords it is pretty much set and forget. I would continue to add content to the site though (at least 1 new article per week).

I would highly recommend the theme that comes with the WSO that Collen Slater offered on her Amazon Treasure Chest.

That WSO will have EVERYTHING you need to succeed with Amazon as an affiliate.

    Good luck !

Yup. Buy her themes and Jan Roos' WSO on Amazon sites. That's really all you need.

I got Jan's amazon wso. Didn't want to use a theme, just used WP weaver to make my own site, but modeling it on the converting theme he uses.

During my niche research, I'm starting to see a lot of Janalike amazon sites... I'm glad that I decided to use my own look now. I origionally did this as I'm a designer and wanted the freedom to have it look the way I wanted... which I feel is cleaner than the theme.

That said, if you don't have a clue about design, I'm sure the theme can work for you...

I've built both types and had success with both types.... single product sites and multi product sites. It is all in your keyword selection. So many people just go after any keyword with volume whereas you could theoretically target lower search volum KW's that are considered "buying" keywords and have a much better conversion rate. buying keywords like Product name + Model is a great buying KW.

Target those and promote good quality products that have good star rating on Amazon, couple that with some good on page seo and you have yourself set up to make good money with the right promotion. wide variety on link profile is best in my opinion but the real quality KWs are the ones you can get IN CONTENT MERIT BASED backlinks.... kinda of goes hand in hand with good keyword selection and quality products.

    • In my opinion it doesn't really matter too much about the theme. As long as it looks clean and neat, and like something you would buy from yourself, then it should work. Your job is just to drive traffic to Amazon

Simple works for me. None of my websites even rank anywhere in sight of the SERPs, LOL! Mostly what I do is send product reviews to my niche email lists, drive direct traffic with article marketing, or even offline promos.

1.anybody can recommend a good Amazon review theme ?

The WordPress review theme is highly recommended, but its a premium theme which costs $37. The Flexsqueeze theme is also recommended.

    2. are you usually promote more then one product on one site? if yes can you explain how to do that (regarding choosing the right keyword to promote)

Yes, the keyword is usually the product name and variations of it to back up the root keyword. You should check the 1st page competition using SEOQuake before choosing a product so you don't pick one which is very difficult to rank well for.

3.what is the best way to promote these type of sites to first page ?

High PR blog commenting, web 2.0 sites, press releases, article marketing and social bookmarking.

4.is it set and forget type of sites ?

You may be able to forget them for a while once you've achieved a good ranking in the SERP's, but eventually the products your promoting will become outdated so you'll need new reviews and competitors will be trying to outrank you depending on the competitiveness of the niche.

    thanks

Regarding question number 1, if you want to go for a free theme rather than a premium theme, check out a theme called iNove. I've used this for Amazon sites and I've had good conversions.

Put brief descriptions of each product on the home page with links to a full review, then embed a youtube video in the sidebar relating to one of the products with an affiliate link underneath.

The site will look semi-professional and you won't need to pay for the theme or any graphics. Works well for me.

      I like twenty-10
I agree with the video and link,
but I also like a day and date widget in the sidebar, with last updated written just above it
      kinda makes things look current
i'm also pretty upfront with moving people off my sites and onto Amazon,
they spend a lot more on selling than me

so i usually pop 2 or 3 big pics of the products I review at the top of my home page and on the bottom of every most other pages, sending them on their way

any thoughts on this stuff more than welcome

I'd pay for a good theme, and make sure you get exactly what you need.

If you have a good theme, people stay on the site and you make money.

If it looks like their grandma made it, they click the back button and go down one search result.

      thanks for answer

i saw some review theme like easyzon and other special for amazon, any one uses them and can share experience.

what you consider as high volume searched keyword ? is it exact match ?

any software to make the k.w selection faster ?

does analyze the ten first results on the first page for the strength of competition is a good strategy, what i should look for to decide that i can compeate with first page sites.?

Maulana put out a great review theme just a short while ago. The review theme by Colleen is great as well but it's getting pretty dated and is sort of a pain to use (you can't upload photos using wordpress and it doesn't really take advantage of the full CMS).

A lot of times I just use really basic themes with lots of white space and I find that they work great as well...

My advice stay away from Colleen's Theme ----

I am pulling my hair out with it --- spent $60 getting graphics done then realised very quickly --- the theme is well outdated ---- uses free plugins etc ----- torture to try and get going ..... cannot upload via WordPress etc ........ custom fields etc .....

I have since scrapped using the theme --- I did get an email from Jan Roos advising he was moving away from it and using another on the WSO Section ........

If it is a Review Type Theme do a search on WSO for LeapFrog etc ....

Echo Michael's Advice - keep it simple .......

I hope Colleen invests some of the Amazon Treasure Chest money in getting the Theme up to date for 2011 and current WordPress 3.x ....

A Shame as I like the look of it just not the hours of trying to get it up in running a waste of time and energy .....

      Good Luck ........

That's the problem I have with many WP themes, if your not a graphics artist, you can spend and arm and a leg on graphics. Luckily, there's fiverr but your still gonna spend $50+

Yeah, the graphics were done by Colleen to fit her WordPress Theme ..

I recently bought the WP Review theme (Colleen's), and I love it. I have very limited time to work on my sites (full-time day job; 2 preschool age kids, etc.). I was able to follow the user guide and learn the theme pretty quickly. I didn't track my time because I literally get 20 minutes here and 30 minutes there, but I had my first site up very quickly.

I love how the theme incorporates the graphics, video, opt-in box along with the review articles. Once you fill in the areas with each of those elements, the site is up and the next step is generating traffic.

Free themes are fine, and I have created a few Amazon sites based on free themes. But the learning curve was actually longer because if I decided I wanted to add a video, I would have to figure out how. If I want to add an opt-in box, I would have to figure out how. All the elements I want are already in WP Review theme, and there are step by step instructions for configuring your own images and info.

That's just my experience for a different point of view.
            Thanks,
            Anna

You ordered two sets of graphics for my wordpress review theme which were done very quickly and included jpgs, psds and thumbnail images for two blogs

the manual explains in step by step detail how to use the theme and when you follow the instructions to the letter it works every single time, i can vouch for that

the theme can be uploaded via wordpress as i demonstrate in the bonus free members area for users of the theme

if you follow the instructions and use the checklists that are included in the members area it does work every time and you can set it up on the same day that you start very quickly

it works with the current version of wordpress

and one review theme that was recently released was listed for sale on flippa after its launch

i've been the owner of the wordpress review theme for years now and have continued to expand on it, have created a bonus membership area for all users of the theme, have now started a graphic creation service for the theme and will also be starting a custom install service for the theme shortly too.

I am always looking at ways to improve the theme, however, i have gotten a lot of feedback from people who like it the way it is.

        regards

        colleen

          Hi Colleen,

          Thanks for replying ---

Firstly, to clear up any misunderstanding with my reply ....

I know that your theme can be uploaded via WordPress, I love the look of the theme ....

I agree that I would not change the look of the theme --- the issues I had with the theme was the backend in Admin Area ....

WordPress is now version 3.2 .....

Every other review theme I have purchased is up to date and I am able to do everything via the Admin Dashboard ...

Upload Images, headers enter details etc ..... tickbox a function and bingo done .... sliders click of a button with no free plugins needed ... etc

I cant do this with your theme and it is fidgetty in my opinion, if the backend was like the other themes brilliant as better user friendly experience.

Now kudos to you for the theme, it is however two years old and not from a backend upto date with the advances in WordPress that was my gripe so to speak .....

Having experience in review sites and Amazon, then I do not have the time to spend trying to get the site up to scratch that is why I gave the opinion to avoid when there are review themes that you tickbox a function - done ......

Sorry if there was any confusion with my original reply

Hi there Tommy I take on board what you say and am looking into things at my end,

However recommending people stay away from the theme was a pretty bold call.

It's been downloaded 1000s of times now and has excellent customer support.

I am also about to offer an inexpensive install service. Additionally after you upload via FTP the images which takes a minute and create a handful of custom fields with image names and locations plus yr affiliate link you are practically done and choose video and optin etc.

I can install the theme a lot quicker than I've been able to install some themes via Wp .

If you do follow the instructions it will work every time. Every support request usually involves the step not having been done properly.

If you had put in a support ticket I would have assisted you also and further to that I have two full time Wp programmers who work for me to assist me.

But I will look at things further but people who follow the instructions correctly can set it up quickly and the more you do it the more proficient you become as with everything.

            Kind regards

            Colleen

I believe in micro level site for Amazon affiliate such as you sell all the games and gaming products through a site and second site you can make for selling gift items. This will help in getting targeted traffic and if one site is down on search engine, even then you can earn from other sites.

I've tested all sorts of themes for reviews sites and the irony is that the simplest 2-column themes have always converted the best for me.

If you do a google search for simple 2 column wordpress themes, you'll find more than enough....The one thing I'd stay away from are jarring colors such as orange or yellow.

Thanks for the reminder. I always get caught up in thinking "what if my sites looked different..." when I should just shut up and build some backlinks...

I mostly use twenty-10 its simple clean and you can make them look good, I am developing my own theme just to add some other functionalites but I will be sticking with the 2 colum clean looking theme which I my testing shows it converts very well.

I've read a few times that Amazon's widgets are pretty low-converting. For my own Amazon sites (I have two of them), I use text links and link pictures, but don't use their widgets.

I have an Amazon Review site that has been working great for me, still adding more content but still good to see an example.

Do you use a plugin to cloak your affiliate links and if so which one?

You could spend $50-$100 on a very crisp WP theme that really will look very attractive to your visitors

    OR

You could take that money and use it instead on backlinking services or outsourcers and just go with the many free 2-column themes available (That's what I would do! )

Good Advice ---- the WSO Section has some decent priced premium themes though for those that want them --- but I do outsource all my backlinking

I build all my amazon sites with a custom xsitepro template. I usually promote a product category or type of product that has different brands, styles or models. For example cruiserbikes and then maybe the different brands schwinn, huffy or by gender, feature, etc as inner pages. I would use a mix of article marketing, social bookmarking and maybe the occasional profile links. Submitting quality, syndication worthy articles has been the best method for my sites. Set and forget? My sites have better staying power in the serps if I add new product reviews or related articles on a regular basis. Monthly updates seem to work for me.

Just get your content up and indexed as soon as possible. Worry about the bells and whistles later.

Making money as an Amazon affiliate is a whole new ballgame now that Panda has reared its ugly head. You'll no longer be able to easily outrank Amazon itself for most product-related keyphrases (which is how it should be). The key is good content (like 1000+ words) linking to Amazon, sprinkled among lots of non-affiliate-linked pages to give your site some authority.

      Good luck.

PS - Don't spend money on a theme, use 2010.

Why is there so much talk about themes here? Just get yourself a simple plain theme with a white background and put some good content on there.

It's all about good product selection (amazon product with good star ratings, high price and lots of reviews), keyword research, GOOD CONTENT (write an excellent, indepth unbiased review, at least 900 words in length), and get traffic. One key thing is to ONLY use in-context TEXT LINKS and image links also. Don't use any of the tools offered by Amazon - carousel widgets, amazon store etc.

That's all there is to it.

I personally own, WPzon, WProbot, and several others, I would say that over all, I get more sales from manually posting content and manually generating links in my own content than I ever got from wpzon or wprobot combined.

I have no idea why that is, other than the content aspect of using original content to get a better quality of traffic, (real buying traffic)

I would like to say that WProbot and WPzon is a good revenue producing product, but sadly, it just does not produce like it did in the past, over the last two years, my sales clicks and stats from these type (Auto posting websites) has diminished dramatically, I would love to know why that is, because I paid a lot of money to use those software programs, and to date, I have not made a ton of money, (a little here and a little there) but no "real revenue" you are better off doing niche research using good keywords, keyword phrases, and original content, sprinkle some good advertising into the mix and let it fly,)

Well, get this wrong, and you don't make money. Not even with millions of backlinks pointing to a badly researched site like that.

This is just my opinion, but the "Colleen" theme is extremely over-used now. It's almost become like the X-Factor green/white/black Adsense theme that you see all over the place. There are at least several hundred "review" sites using it now, and probably well more than that. For that reason alone I would avoid it and try to go with something more unique.

I'm not trying to step on any toes, and I mean, it's obviously a very successful and popular theme, but I think there's a such thing as being TOO successful... these sites all end up looking identical, and frankly trivial for Google to identify; most of them are the definition of "thin affiliate." - not because of the theme, but because of how people use it.

I don't personally use Colleen's theme, but I do alot of Amazon research and I can't say I see it popping up THAT often. Several hundred 'review' sites out of millions really is just a drop in the ocean.

I mostly use Thesis myself, and that's hardly unique - I'm sure there are many more review sites using the Thesis theme but it doesn't stop me making sales. The theme isn't what makes a 'thin affiliate' site - it's the affiliate who creates the site and adds the content. I have no affiliation whatsoever with Colleen's theme by the way - I just think that if it's working for people, why not use it.

One of the things that sort of annoy me is the idea that anyone can make money affiliate marketing, with little or no effort, that is how it is most often sold to the average buyer, the problem I have with this is that probably 94 percent of the plugin buyers never make back their investment in the cost of the plugin, that leaves a very profound amount of unsatisfied, users, it is with this in mind that I post, because I have had so many clients come to me with the idea that they can just slap up a website, throw some PLR content at it, and set it on auto pilot and when they dont make a dime, they want to know why that is, I dont blame them.

The truth is and I am not pointing a finger here, but the truth here is that sellers make more money than buyers, (most of the time this is just the way it is) it does not have to be that way, but there are a certain amount of buyers, that do not want to do anything, sorry if that offends anyone, but that is the way it is.

There is a certain percent of buyers that either loose interest, or just realize that the way forward involves too much work they want the easy path, they want the do no work approach, that sadly just does not exist.

This does not excuse a product that fails the buyer, but that is how it is sold here and else where online, the person fails the product, you know what that is an excuse and not a good one either. The product most often fails the buyer, unless the buyer fits into one of the categories above.

The truth is that you have to do some work, you have to manage your time, you have to think faster and work harder than the other guy in this business and if your not prepared to do that you will not be successful.

Tools are good, wordpress plugins are good, they help you get your work done, but they do not and can not substitute for work, add to that the very real fact that Search Engines are targeting Auto posting plugins, (next update due out very soon)

And if people are not prepared for that eventuality, they are going to continue to be disappointed, I suspect that there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth in the very near future for those that are not prepared for this upcoming change.

Five perhaps 7 years ago, you could get away with ranking for content using this method, however, the days of the set it and forget it website are about to be very much over.

I've been selling on Amazon for quite some time and have been very successful selling goods with a very high profit margin.

I guess I'm just skeptical of the Amazon Affiliate program. Honestly, my experience has been that any product I look for on Google brings up an Amazon store page. I actually don't recall ever pulling up an affiliate page for a particular product.

Does anyone want to comment on how effective their affiliate campaigns have been with regard to subject driven versus brand and product name driven keyword campaigns ?

I've been using the Flexibility 3 theme. It takes a little bit to customize the design right (not too long), but I think it looks pretty nice. There's a free and a paid version. The free version has an annoying little link at the bottom, but it isn't really noticeable unless you are looking for it.

Amazon just doesn't pay its affiliates enough, so many ways to make better money as an affiliate, but everyone has to start somewhere..make sure those review sites has 24hour traffic/visitors coming to them if you want the $$$$

I keep my sites ultra clean and simple. My focus is on getting traffic to the thing, not making it pretty. I've always found that simple, clean sells way better then pretty anyway.

Also as for going with one big site or several small ones, I do both in several niches, (and am expanding big time at the moment). NEVER put all your eggs in one basket, you need at minimum TEN baskets producing their own income each to be safe.
