Staying Focused Is Such A Big Thing For Marketers - How Do You Do It!?

Have noticed that over many years in here, the warrior forum is full of people not doing as well as they should be. I spent the last year or so trying to come up with a little tip or strategy to stay focused while doing my online work.

That was to get and egg timer, tip it up and go to work. Work your butt off on stuff that is to do with your business. When your timer runs out, then get up and take a rest, a trip to the toilet or a glass of water, coffee or whatever.

Doing this has been helping me work my business, become more productive and make more money.

Do you have a little tip, trick technique to help you stay focused. I am sure the other warriors would like to know??????

The most important thing I guess is to stop reading all the gurus emails that reach your inbox daily as every email will distract you from your goal.
Also, don't ever try a new business model before starting to make money in the current one.

I agree. Timothy Ferris, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, suggested that you only check your emails twice a day at set times --if your business allows. I think it is important to avoid opening every email.

Well said. But, there's a little extension........

Keep very strong point of view with the procedure what you're doing now.

      Can you? YES,

      Ok!

Open emails and suck all helpful tips related to your present business, test them and implement.

Totally agree with both things you said. I actually opted out of a lot email lists to avoid reading so many useless emails. And its so true, sticking with one thing at a time is very important.

  • It's easy, you just have to find a technique that works for you.

First thing in the morning, metrics. Backlinks, Alexa, Google Analytics (is traffic still growing, did that guest posting pay off?), AdSense (do I need to reposition ad blocks?). Start the day's forum postings. Start writing today's blog post. Create a new page for a second property. Buy a couple of Fiverr gigs to get workers started on my newest project.

Then, I look at the front page of the WSJ to see what's happening in the world. Back to work. Email. Research new opportunities.

Do some stretches. Tea with milk and have some fruit.

Around 9 am start thinking about going to the office to get some real work done. :p

If you find a way to measure your progress in mind - body - spirit, you'll find it trivial to stay motivated.

100% Agree. What works for others DOES NOT work for me.. but good news is I found what does!

I like working at night, so I adjusted my schedule to do so. I'm weird. All the bigger guys I've talked to tell me I need to get up early... but I don't like too, so I'm not going too!

I'm efficient at night, I work happier, and If I wanted to get up early and go to work against my will, I'd get a job I hate that atleast had health benefits!

The reason that I am an IMer is based on the fact that I LIVE to WORK, and not WORK to LIVE!

Find what works for you, and don't let anyone tell you to do it another way! It's your business, you make the rules

I am using Doitex - it's free software which protects health and gradually develops motivation for computer users.

It checks intensity of computer usage. If more than 50 min then pop ups reminder to take a short 5-10 min break. Those intervals are recommended by doctors and by top motivators of the world too.

It is recommended to set up some motivational pictures and quotes in it.

I have got several inspirational quotes from warrior forum too and I put them in my Doitex. That's good learning tool because usually we forget after 1 day what we have read.

The main concept used in Doitex is "self talk". Google for those words and you will discover interesting things

...staying focused is one of the hardest things for me to do , but i still do it anyway. i personally dont believe in taking small steps everyday to getting to my goals, i believe in doing as much as i can everyday to get to my goals and this works just fine for me. when i first started IM i was on everyone's list, now i am only in the list's of a few good marketers. before doing something online always ask yourself, is this going to help me in reaching my goals or not! if not then move on to doing what counts. you can still have fun online and watch movies and stuff but you just need to find a balance and use your time accordingly.

Remaining focused is something that has completely hindered me from achieving anything in Internet Marketing. I have always had a hard work mentality, especially when working within my full time job, but unfortunately this is coupled with a play hard mentality that automatically switches on whenever I leave work. This means that whenever I force myself to sit at my computer in the evenings I procrastinate and eventually end up getting nothing done.

Recently however I have seen a shift. About 6 months ago I split up from my long term girlfriend (don't worry, this isn't a sob story, shw was annoying anyway) and decided that being single, approaching 30 and having a rather impressive beer belly was not hte way to go. So for 6 months I have been forcing myself to hit the gym hard, and am now at 5 times a week and looking good. How does this apply? Well essentially I've noticed that with anything like that, you only really need to achieve a little success to gain more motivation. The first month for me was hell as any changes were hard to come by, but as the kg's started rolling off, I was more and more motivated to go. I am now at the potin where I am totally addicted and am measuring and tracking every aspect of my workouts.

Apply this to this situation, and you can see that all you need to do is set a realistic ACHIEVABLE goal in the short term, and once you hit that you will then gain the motivation to move on. This is now working for me in my IM endeavours as well and I hope it will lead to the same success as I have seen in my fitness.

    I've always found this simple.

    Expect success!!

The reason most people struggle with motivation is because they don't have any real idea of whether what they're doing matters.

If I told you that if you wrote 5 articles a day for the rest of this year I would give you one million dollars in cash - do you think you would struggle to do it?

The main reasons for lack of focus are multitasking and distractions. So a very effective method that comes straight from Eben Pagan is to avoid checking emails first thing in the morning and and work in uninterrupted blocks of time. You also want to create an environment that is as far away from distraction as you can because it normally takes 15 minutes to get in the flow so if you keep getting interrupted you won't be able to stay focused.

Staying focused is really hard for us - but I think it's hard for everyone in this modern area where it's so easy to get interrupted: emails, cellphone, etc

For me, I downloaded a small countdown timer that I start at 45 mins and I work until the timer rings. I then take 15 mins off and I start again for another 45 mins.

    Hope this helps!

Make a weekly schedule, set daily goals, and stick to them, stick to them, stick to them !

Review your work each day or evening. If you are not making your goals, ask yourself why, and make the necessary adjustments.

Without a schedule and goals you're sailing in a ship without a rudder.

In the midst of our fast-paced lives and high-speed continuous communication, keeping the very important things in focus is more crucial than ever, and is also quite challenging. One reason is because so many things are competing for our attention and thus there are more choices to make on where to focus.

It is easy to be distracted, especially when the source of the distraction is more appealing than the task at hand. Need to control the interruptions, but it would also be effective to outsource the tasks we like doing the least and don’t perform all that well. It will always seem harder and harder to be focused because you need to deliver too many things yourself.

People with goals are more focussed and succeed because they know where they are going… It’s as simple as that.

YES YES! I recently started getting very focused. How did I do it? Well,, the first thing I did was to start unsubscribing to all those guru emails. I now only take product selling emails from Warriors and Warriors only. All that crap out there in internetland is very distracting and usually a bunch of garbage.

The second thing I did,,, tirned off the t.v.

I find staying focused a bit hard to do myself.

Some things I have found that do help when I really need to get some work done are the following:

    1. Turn off the cell phone
    2. Turn off any music
    3. Make sure youtube and regular email clients are not open
    4. make sure I've already got a cup of coffee

Then start hitting it. Every 45 minutes or so, take a 5 - 10 minute break, and then get back to it. Treat this as a real job, even if you are doing it in your spare time. If you focus...even two, 45 minute blocks of time is enough to get some significant amounts of work accomplished.

I want to 1st pay of my debt, 2nd quit my J.O.B., 3rd have the freedom and choices to do whatever I want with my life without time and money being an issue anymore. The following is exactly how I focus.

    1. Remove all subscription to any info emails i.e. gurus
    2. Have a notepad for all future ideas. If I get an idea write it down and leave it
    3. Have a business plan- simple one A4 page is good enough
    4. from my business plan map out my action plan
    5. break down my action plan into small steps over the next month
    6. After each week review what I have done and ensure my future action steps are aligned.

I only work for 40 minutes then get up for 20 minutes and repeat the cycle.
There are times when you will work for more than 40 minutes it cannot be avoided but try keep this to a minimum.

After all this if you find yourself distracted, what you are working on is no good or you are scared of hard work.

    Cheers Arturo

I have ADHD so this is a challenge for me but I am working on it. I was one of those that would hop from one opportunity to the next, and well of course lost money instead of gaining. NOW I knew it was time that if things did not change, I would be continuing to go downward. So I needed to sit back and evaluate what I was doing wrong. Needless to say I decided to chuck all of those other opportunities that did nothing for me and now I am focusing on two things, which is my new business and my book and I will be sticking with those, nothing more. And because I am on a shoestring budget, I am coming up with ways to advertise wisely and effectively. And finally creating a schedule. ADHD is no excuse to not organize yourself. It takes more work but again, it can be done. I still have my scatterbrained moments but I am getting better and will keep striving for the best.(not perfection because that also gets me into trouble)

How timely. Just received an email from Mark Ling about not having enough time (which is closely related to focusing) and he recommends Rememberthemilk.com site. Its a free task management program which helps you list down your tasks, categorize them (personal, work, etc), set priorities, etc.

Personally, I easily get distracted when I see something new (e.g. wso with rave reviews) that looks too enticing to miss. Mark has a great suggestion on this - have an "Ideas" category in your lists and you just put new ideas that cross your mind into it. In this way, you won't be distracted from your current task list but at the same time you can go back and explore these new ideas when you're able to.

The thing that keeps me focused the most is surrounding myself with people who have the same interests, goals and dreams. But here is my main thing that really helped me as well.

One I sat down and thought how my life would be like when I have acquired my goals and dreams. I wrote down the type of income I wanted for myself and wrote down the things I would want for myself. Then I converted it to dollar amount.

I narrowed it down to how much traffic I needed to my pages with the worst case scenario of conversions. Then I figured how much traffic and how large my lists and the relationship i needed to have with my list in order to reach that goal.

I create a dream board or a vision board with the images and numbers I would like to have then paste it as a wall paper behind my computer. So every time I go to the computer I know what I need to do for the day.

Even though some may see it as a distraction coming to this forum for 5 minutes in the morning and before I finish my day helps me to stay focused. I am guilty of getting caught up in the little details and reading through the threads here reminds me to look at the bigger (and more profitable) picture.

Taking time out to get outside and sit by the beach with a real pen and some real paper and do a brain storming and planning session each week also helps me to remain fresh and focused.

For myself, I break my time into "chunks" - I use a timer program that interrupts me at set intervals (45 minutes usually). This lets me focus on what I'm doing, and insures I change up often. The result is that I'm able to put in very focused time.

I have actually gotten more work done and have been more focused when I take a break every 45-60 minutes. Sometimes it's a 5 minute break, sometimes it's a 15 minute break. With the recents studies that have just come out that shows sitting down for long periods of time is very bad for your over all health and cardiovascular system, I've made a point to take many breaks during the day.

Implementing a consistent exercise routine has also made me more productive. I take a 4-5 mile walk in the early morning about 3-4x a week and in the evenings about 2x a week. I also play a lot of sports, mostly basket ball and tennis. All that extra oxygen and exercise helps greatly with concentration and focus.

Lastly, I plan my day the night before so I know EXACTLY what to focus on the next day.

When I need to get a lot of writing done I make sure I stay offline so I'm not tempted to check emails or facebook. Sometimes it helps to go to the library or coffee shop for a change of scenery and where I'm not thinking...maybe I should throw in a load of laundry, etc.

DEFINITELY opt out of all the "guru" emails.

Also, stay out of the Warrior Forum and get to work :-p

I have reminders around my computer of why I'm doing this in the first place. Examples:

      - having the opportunity to spend more time with my wife and future children
      - buying that Camaro
      - being able to work from anywhere
      - having more control over my potential income

Usually that's pretty effective for helping me focus. Additionally, I get up dreadfully early (5:00AM) when there aren't a lot of distractions abound.

Staying focused is one reason why some people
are more successful than others i.e. the majority.

From reading hundreds of posts on the WarriorForum over the years it would seem to me that those who lose focus are those who know that they 'want to make money' but haven't progressed from that initial thought.

This leaves them vulnerable from jumping from one money making scheme to the next.

My advice - and what works for me - is to stop being the proverbial butterfly and settle one just one way of making money online. If you don't now which one to choose, then I'd say, write each of them down on a piece of paper, close your eyes, shuffle the pieces of paper on your desk and pick one.

It really doesn't matter on which technique or form of marketing you choose; what's important that you just do one thing.

By choosing one, you can see the end goal more clearly, which helps you enormously to stay focused.

Some ways that have helped me stay focused are by using the free online task management tool
    http://www.toodledo.com

Also, I use browser extensions to limit my time spent on "distractions." For me, it news sites, but for other people it's usually Facebook/Twitter or email.
For Chrome I use the StayFocused extension and for FireFox I use LeechBlock. Others use http://www.rescuetime.com which can block sites and analyze your time spent in various applications.

Lastly, one of the most effective tricks is to begin each day by writing down my Top Two priorities for the day. Don't work on anything else until you've made measurable progress on those two items.

I use Timer - E.ggTimer.com to keep me on my toes while working online! That is to make sure I don't spend too much time doing one thing. Although I get projects completed with this approach, it doesn't always happen that way. When you're working online, you need to be self-disciplined and highly motivated.

Another thing that keeps me on track is having a to-do list or a checklist (using good ol' pen and paper ) that needs to be done. This gives me a plan, sort of a roadmap of what I intend to accomplish during the day. I make it a point to do something every day as well, no matter how small it is.

The funny thing is, I get lost when I don't have a to-do list. I mean, I don't really accomplish much if that happens. I could spend all day reading ebooks, browsing threads and going through WSO's which I bought, but not really taking action. For me to take action, I need to write it down (the steps) in paper. I keep a separate notebook for IM stuff.

That works for me, but I don't know if it'll work for you

    Spot on!

One of the first things I did to focus on IM is to hit "unsubscribe" to almost every list I signed up for, particularly those who keep sending me promotional offers with the latest money-making push-button softwares!

It has cleared my inbox, and kept my head clear as well (so I won't get sidetracked by the latest gimmicks)

That's the power of personal branding, centered on one's passions.

The thing is, with me, I couldn't say for certain where my passion truly lies. It more like a hit and miss at the moment, trying to figure out what. I can be good at whatever I do, but I know that when I focus on my passions (when I find out what they are), energy will be oozing out of me, and as you said, "it will be incredible"

    Here is a great one...

Open a gmail account and only keep 1-3 people that you'll want to listen every day .All the newsletters that arrive, unsubscribe. Worked great when I did it!
