Guidelines on buying domain names and hosting

It's been about 7 years since I've last ran a website. I've been crazy procrastinating on taking my blogging "Pro" and using the excuse I don't know where to go for hosting.

**** that.

What should I be looking for in a hosting company? Who are the players these days? If I want to run a wordpress blog will I need any more then the bare minimum?

Is there any reason not to look for the cheapest domain name sellers? Who sells em cheap?

Thanks for your help.

Reliability, friendly customer service and the absence of a huge number of plausible, credible-sounding horror stories about them online, maybe?

Different people recommend different registrars/hosts, of course. Many here recommend NameCheap (registrar) and HostGator (hosting) - I'm one of those people. But as long as you register and host in two different places, it doesn't usually matter very much. It's only normally if you register the domain-name through the host that you're exposing yourself to the future risk of any really irrecoverable disasters.

(A large number of people here would probably advise you to stay away from GoDaddy for hosting - especially if you want to use Wordpress. But even then, doubtless someone will pop up and say "I've been hosting Wordpress blogs there for 5 years and never had a problem" - that'll be a real minority voice, though).

    Well,
basically, anyone today can afford a name and a hosting plan.
I'll suggest you subscribe a hosting plan in which the server IP will correspond to your country or your market's country, since Google takes that into account.
Cheapest is not always the best, for bandwith for instance since google takes that into account too...
By the way, some people say keywords in the domain name is irrelevant, some others say otherwise.
I'll let you forge your own opinion.

Put my vote in for Hostgator or Hostmonster. I use them both and both have good pricing and great customer service

For your domain name I recommend using namecheap. For web hosting if you can afford them use HostGator if you need a lower price I recommend HostMonster or WebHostingHub. Best of luck to you

Namecheap is a good option for domain names. The latest coupon code is always available here: Namecheap coupon code - Web Hosting Diary

I've always purchased my domain names from Godaddy and ALWAYS used online promo codes to knock down the price substantially. Never pay retail for these services. Always check online for promo codes.

The Godaddy promo code I used recently gave me 31% off my entire order:

    Not too shabby.

As for hosting services, Host Gator seems to be the way to go (and if you want a discount, check out my signature below).

When you decide to upgrade from shared hosting, however, I'd recommend ServInt's VPS. I just migrated my site from shared hosting to VPS and have been very impressed with their tech support.

Depends on your budget. Go for cheaper domain and hosting till you make good income. For domain name, i recommend Netfirms and hosting go for Siteflip.

The best approach is to contact several reputable web hosts in the market through Live chat or phone, they should be able to tell you what services they offer and which they don't. Google is the right place where you will find tons of web hosts for comparison and review. However, determine what exactly you want for hosting a site such as how large you except the site to be, etc........

Well plenty of people have listed these but my 2 cents.

Hostgator for sure....Great for Wordpress...and you can add as many domains as you like.

NameCheap is also a good register....although ith the right discount code GoDaddy is fine too.

DO NOT use GoDaddy for Hosting. Terrible Terrible Terible.
