Hi all, JD here.

I want to start building my IM list. I've been marketing online for 4 years and I have had a nice amount of success from my affiliate sites(35 in all--33 Blogs and 2 SBI sites).

I am guilty of not building a list:rolleyes:. I get questions from friends and family about getting started in IM.

I'd like to create a Free Reports/Audios as a thank you for Opting In to my list.

What are some good topics to create the free reports on. For those wanting to get started online? How do you decide what to create your reports about?

Thnaks again,
JD

First, don't look at them as a "thank you" for opting in to your list, Johnny. Look at them as an "offer" that you make to visitors to your sites. It's an offer of a product which is relevant to them and which they urgently want to read, and the payment for it is simply that they supply their email address.

Whatever your targeted traffic is targeted for.

You look at how you're generating your traffic, and produce free reports that are on subjects on which those people are already looking for information. Don't try to persuade people that they're interested in what you're offering: find out what they're already interested in, and offer them that.

(And by the way, using "audio" will lose some people).

      Hi Alexa,

since this will be a new list being created from scratch, how wouldI find out would "would be" IMer's arelooking for?

I know once I build the list, all I have to do is ask or create survey's.

But since I am starting from with a new list.......also audio may loose people but it's you can do other things with audio, like load it on your IPOD and go for a jog or listen to it while in your car.

All of which can not be dones with an ebook. I will offer audio and a ebook.

I won't answer for Alexa but I will say this. Build your list around something in demand. Make that thing something you have passion for and something you know about.

If your thing has been affiliate marketing offer something related to that. There are plenty of tricks and tips related to affiliate marketing. Choose some stuff you personally relate to because that makes it more fun, more interesting for you. You could create some stuff about how you built your business, step by step.

Such a blueprint coming from someone who has been there and done it would be valuable. I'd also consider charging something for it. In doing that you separate freebie seekers from actual buyers.

JD, offering both the audio and ebook is fine. It's the audio-only offers that can put people off sometimes.

You want your 'ethical bribe' to be something your potential subscriber wants; answer one burning question and you could be gold. You don't want your freebie to be too comprehensive. If the freebie gives too much, a lot of subscribers will think they don't really need what you're selling.

For example, one question that comes up pretty much daily here is "which autoresponder should I use" or variants thereof. Do you think a free report comparing the major autoresponder services and recommending one might be of interest?

Another common question is "should I build a regular HTML site or use Wordpress?". Those folks might just offer up an email for a report on the pros and cons of each system, along with advice on when to use which.

Keep the subject of your freebie related to the purpose of the list, narrow in scope and specific enough that anyone getting the report can experience positive results quickly.

Both Alexa and travlinguy have just given you some truly golden advice... I hope you take it.

I would just add one thing: Be sure that this free gift that gets them to opt-in is of high perceived value to your target market, but doesn't cost you much, if anything. Make sure that it is very informative and over-delivers... but doesn't give away the golden goose, just a few of its eggs.

I'm glad you decided to build a list. Be patient, and consistent. Good luck!
