A Questions For The Aussies Out There

Hi guys,

I wonder if someone from Aus can advise me on what the best Aus web hosting company would be, and also where to get a .com.au domain for the best price.

I'm looking at setting up some Aussies based websites, and would appreciate any advice you could give me with this.

Thanks

You'll need to be a registered Australian business (or at least some kind of access to one) in order to buy a .com.au

Crazy are probably the easiest in terms of domain names. DO NOT use them for hosting though - I had a nightmare experience!

Seriously, host overseas if you can, the cost just doesn't compare.

Wow, I had no idea you guys were so strict over there with your domain names. Since I am none of the above yet, I guess I won't be doing that.

      Thanks

crazy domains for a .com.au domain, but yeh you will need an abn.
I use blue host and hostgator for my hosting, but they aren't Australian based, found cheaper overseas.

As you dont have an ABN...Im assuming your in the US yes??

Another option might be to simply register a .com then use Googles Webmaster Tools and set the Geographical preference to Australia

As for Google places however, I believe you require certain demographic details such as a postal address, phone numbers etc.

Dont quote me though, I could be wrong.

Heres the link to my suggestion above. Ahh, they call it 'Geotarging'

      Thanks for the reply,

Yes you are quite correct with needing an address, phone number etc, but from what I can see it is possible to rent a virtual office or address in most cities in the world, so it is something I was going to look into.

I actually use the geographical targeting with some of my sites in the US, but for some reason had assumed for local places it would be best to use local hosting in that country.

I'll give it a try though with a normal hostgator account using Geotargeting, and also a standard .com domain.

      Thanks and all the best

For sure you need a physical address here in Australia for Google Places. When you set up the listing and provide the physical address then Google sends the password to that address by snail mail.

That precludes trying to attempt anything on Google Places unless you have a representative over here with a physical address that does not already have a Google Places listing - one address, one listing

Same, my .com.au domains are hosted overseas too. No idea why they are so strict, I think they must be the only ones to be that picky, because I've owned a .co.uk and a co.nz with no problems.

Hey TB. As stated you do need an ABN (Australian Business Number) as a minimum. There might be another way around it though, I don't know. However crazydomain.com.au is probably the best. I have registered several .com.au domains with them. They have worked very well for me. I have never hosted with them though. I do all my hosting with HostGator.

As mentioned you'll need an ABN, not just an Australian address for the .com.au domain. In terms of hosting I would always host in Australia if you are looking for organic traffic - you'll generally get better SE rankings if you host in the country you target.

Sorry but thats just not true.

Ive owned numerous sites that sit first page (one was an authority site that held 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th position on the first page of Google for its primary keyword) and all of them were/are hosted in the US.

I'd be interested to know where you are getting your information from? One of the sillier things I have heard.

So you would say it's still possible to rank a .com hosted in the US, for the Aussies Google? I guess all you would need to do then is change the Geo Targeting?
Anyone had any experience with this?
