First Sale! And A Question Regarding Amazon Affiliate

Checked out my amazon associates page today to see I had made my first sale!

Its nothing really, the low percentage and it being a low priced additional product (rather than the $200 main products) that was purely talked about on my site with a reccomendation link means I'll only recieve around 50 cents. But feels good, and its a start. Really hungry to improve my ranking and bring in the traffic and sales now.

The site isnt on the first page and the particular niche it is (its in the home and garden area) makes it rely on organic visits really, which unless its page one, isnt bringing me a lot of traffic (struggling to find relevant blogs, forums etc...).

Had about 70 or so visits in the 2 months its been online, hovering around page 3 but has progressed slowly from nothing to various pages ranking between 22-25 over the past month of SEO.

I just cant wait until the work pays off and gets it to page one, then I can really test what is and isnt working (the main keyword and other variations add up to about 8-10k exacts) and hope to bring in some sales.

Anyway...getting to my question.

On amazon it shows one product ordered, but no commission. Does it only display your commission earnt after the product has been shipped?

(the images may show 119 clicks but in fact, its probably around 20 real clicks, the majority are from the amount of website testing and changes I have made over the past 2 months)

Congrats on the first sale! Even with a low payout, I firmly believe that seeing the first one really opens your mind.

To answer your question, you got it right-Amazon will credit the commission after the item ships.

CONGRATUALTIONS on your first sale and its nothing to be played down no matter if it is .20 cents.

You have taken action built a site wrote content and now you have your first sale which is a GREAT feeling and it confirms what I always say to my students and that is AMAZON works and with focus and persitance you can build a great monthly residual income, and if you can make a $1 you can Make $10 or $100 you just have to ratch it up a bit.

Be sure you keep building additional sites and pay particular attention to on page SEO and be sure to keep adding content, and start building some backlinks using your keywords as anchor text.

Your on your way the first $1 is always the hardest

Yep, thats what I've been working on for the past month. The first month was just research, website building, creating and adding my own content, on page SEO'ing the hell out off it, and then the off page SEO began in the 2nd month, mixed in with new content every now and then.

I have a weekly plan laid out in the following:

        Monday: New post/content to site
Tuesday: New product review if possible
Wednesday: After new content is indexed, add to article directories and posterous to different services
        Thursday: Backlink
        Friday: Backlink

Out of curiosity have you tried any other affiliate networks for your site? If so, have you seen any sales from them? The reason I ask is because I feel that Amazon has one of the most successful affiliate networks for internet marketers these days. My personal belief is that this is due to the fact that the end user gets an actual physical product mailed to them as opposed to a digital file which may require some assembly.

Ohh and the other bonus is that once you reach certain thresholds within Amazon's platform you will begin to earn higher commissions for each sale Congratulations on breaking through with the first sale.
        Thanks.

This is my first niche and IM project.

Have only been learning it for 2 months really. I chose Amazon as I like the fact that like you they recieve a physical end product, and the fact the Amazon brand gives any user looking to buy trust and confidence.

Yeah I noticed that Im currently at 4%, after 7 sales it goes up to 6% I think?

Cheers. Its been a huge confidence booster, and I cant wait to see it on the first page (whenever that may be) and pulling in the traffic. Then I can really test it and bring in the sales.

The way my site is set up is that it is a consumer advice and information website & blog for a particular type of product within the home and garden area. All manually written and quality content pages, with a dedicated " 'Product Reviews' " page that displays links to rated reviews that are actually individual posts that appear on the home page.

So ill write a new review as a post and post it up, and then for the reviews page I'll create an attractive image which displays the product, an out of 5 star rating and a 'CLICK HERE TO READ THE REVIEWS' which will link to the relevant post.

Like below (I removed the product image and title)

No idea if that works as I dont have the ranking or traffic to test it, but we'll see!

And of course I try to add new posts/content at least once a week. As well as the off page SEO. I think im doing the right things, its gone from not ranking to having its keywords rank in the 20's in its first month and is steadily increasing (except for the occasional odd google dance), which for a new site and my first project, is promising.

My plan is to once (and hopefully) I get it on the first page and bringing in sales, I can begin working on a second niche while maintaining the first when needs be.

I am going to disagree with you here. This is a something. A really big something. Your first sale and your first results from your efforts. This is a very big deal.

Now you have something to work with. Something to test new ideas on to see what will bring more sales. You have enough numbers to start testing things on to see what will do te best for increasing your traffic and your conversions.

And you ahead of the folks who have not started yet.

    Congratulations.

Congrats on your first sale. I made my first sale about 3 weeks after I put up my website. Somebody purchased an elliptical trainer and a bottle of perfume. My first three months I found that my number of click thrus doubled each month as I worked on getting my pages ranked in Google. It is addictive to wake up every morning and go to Amazon to see if you made a sale.

You will see the commission once the item is shipped. There may be a day or two delay between the order and the shipping.

It just takes one sale to be inspired to take more and more action.

While you're waiting for your SEO efforts to kick in, don't forget to drive traffic to your site in other ways, like article marketing, bookmarking, newsletter marketing, Facebook, etc. I find the traffic I get to Amazon from these sources is even more likely to buy than people who find sites via the search engines.

nice, 1 thing on amazon is that i dont mind selling low priced products because those little products quickly get your commissions payout % bumped up quickly each month....since amazon % payout structure is unit based...its helps alot quickly going from 4% up to 7% so i find it easier to get ranked higher for low priced items and then then work more on the higher priced stuff......also people forget that the benefit of amazon if you get someone that buys a low priced item thru your site many times they will add stuff to get the free shipping(over $25 spent) so i generally find that i get credit for random stuff that I know i dont have advertised.

Congratz on your first sale. Yes, you will get the commission after the shipping.
Although, the payout is low with amazon affliates but what really works with amazon is that many a times people buy products in bulk from amazon (due to retail purposes) and that multiplies your income.

I have made three sales and none have them have been a product I promoted. People just kept searching and found something new to buy. I love amazon

Good luck to your site. Amazon is powerful and when you make more sales you'll start earning more per sale. I'm in the same boat as you right now. Just gotta get it to page 1!

Just a heads up on Amazon affiliate program for those in California - They just kicked us out!

Has something to do with a law signed by Gov. Brown today - I believe about collecting tax for online sales....I've haven't done the full research on it, but I know that the discussion about collecting taxes for online sales isn't a new one. Don't know if this will follow suit for other states - or if Amazon is flexing their muscle for lobbyists do get better business practices in California, so not sure if the decision will stick or not.

I'm not a "sky is falling" kind of person - so that's not meant to scare anybody...just make sure that you are diversified in the kind of affiliate products you're promoting. In some cases you may be able to go direct to the vendor for an affiliate relationship.
