Depends on where your business is located.

Companies house can be found online plus the HMRC also online Unless you are earning over the VAT fresh hold, go for sole trader and it is a very simple end of year tax return. For free advice contact a local enterprise forum (run by the DHSS I think), or failing that speak to you bank manager. Accountants only needed if business is complex and you are over the zero VAT limit or employ people.
Loads of free government help for small start ups.

p.s. if you are earning a truck load of cash domicile in the Caymans

Ask your accountant or contact your local county auditor's office, secretary of state or local chamber of commerce. Many of the latter will have websites with information on setting up a business in your area.

ADDED: Okay, my info was for the U.S. but I imagine there would be similar resources in the UK to check.

If you live in the uk, you have only one choice...get yourself an accountant. Yes they will charge for their services but, you will get the job done right. If you decide to do it yourself, the time it will take you to carry out the research will be ridiculous compared to how much you'd have to pay an accountant to do it for you. And even then you have no chance of getting it 50% right. Don't forget, in the UK the penalties for getting things like this wrong can be crippling.

        Good luck.
