Is this a good business idea???

Hey guys

I read the other day a thread about a member of WF who sold a website that wasnt generating any income for 1k. Really interesting.

I was thinking about this: Will it be a good busines idea to buy domains, create websites or blogs with solid quality content (like 30-50 articles depending on the niche) and then put them on Flippa for sale?

Obviously I dont expect 1k for each one, but if I can get $300-$1000 for every website I think it would be a good investment of time and effort.

What do you think of this?

    Hey James,

People do it all time. Although traffic/generating revenue definitely help, a lot of buyers are perfectly happy with a 100% unique site.

Flippa is completely open and transparent. It is very easy to look at all the sites that are currently for sale, all the sites that sold and for how much and, importantly all the sites that did not sell.

Do your due diligence and it is definitely feasible.

One thing to keep in mind is, what makes a website valuable? If it's not earning revenue, it has to have something else that a buyer would be willing to pay for. Might be organic traffic that could be monetized easily, or an established mailing list, or even just a complete, unique site with good content that they could then monetize and promote.

I agree with the suggestion to check out Flippa, you'll get a good idea of what kind of sites are selling and for how much.

I purchase a number of sites every month off Flippa. I of course look for earnings/visitors, but one of the key things I look for, even beyond that, and to echo the poster above, is if the owner has developed a subscriber list, thats something I am even more interested in.

I know if there is one, even a small one, I can contact them and (re) start to cultivate a relationship. To me its a more valuable commodity than traffic or even direct earnings with some sites.

All of the above plus the domain name itself. Make sure it's a dot com domain name and a researched niche keyword. If the domain name is good you can fetch hundreds of dollars if not thousands.

Good idea, but you need a good execution plan for it to be viable.

Everything usually has value to somebody. Its why Garage Sales are always so popular. One mans rubbish is another mans jewels.

Be proactive, do your due dilligence and nuture domains. If you have domains with traffic that are aged then they will always be worth more than at first point of registration.

They do not even have to be producing income when you sell them either. Its easier to sell mainstream niche sites than very targeted ones, just because there is more chance for eyeballs on your site. However, when you build a good enough following, you may even sell your site to the list that reads from it!!

Its surprising how many site contributors end up becoming the purchaser when they are sold on sites like Flippa.

A lot of people do this now. The question is, how much time will it take you verses the amount of revenue that you will take in selling a site? If you can put together good sites that people want to buy, and you can do it in a time frame that can be profitable for you, then yes why not?

Your best bet is to go to Flippa and look at the Just Sold tab and see what kind of sites people are buying.

You either set a reserve price or a minimum bid that allows for a profit. People say don't do that and you will get more bids, but only the really kick ass sites can get away with that. An average site just may go for $25 and not cover expenses.

I also heard that the older the site, the more it will sell for. I suppose to make a profit you would have to first get the site at pretty high rankings before you sell it. Articles, backlinks and all that will do the trick.
