Giving Up the Day Job

Hi guys, new to WF, first thread and first post here.

I'm not totally new to IM, but by no means experienced. I've had a handful of CB sales, but not enough commission to generate a paycheck. If I'm honest, I haven't been consistent in my efforts and like many others, have suffered info overload.

Be interested to know how many full-time IMers out there and how long it took before you decided to give up the day job. Particularly interested in the success stories of the non-techie/webmaster types.

It took me a little over 2 years, but I didn't work for 6 months straight at one point. If I started over again with the knowledge I have now, It would take me 9 - 12 months to get a average full time income ($3000/mo)

I'm not there yet, although I did have my first £100 day the other day!!!

However, one thing is apparent and that is that you must treat it like a real job....even if you are only working a few hours 'part-time' in the evenings.
Set yourself targets and make sure you stick to completing the tasks you set yourself.

With the world of distractions at your fingertips, it's all too easy to either procrastinate or just simply get 'sidelined' by something else.

I find that not checking my inbox (unless it's related to a project I'm working on) helps, because get sucked into the sales letter vortex and waste huge tracts of time...

In a real job, this wouldn't be tolerated and as a result, you have to apply those 'bricks and mortar' ideals to this game.

Slightly off track...However, I hope it helps, if you do take the plunge.

I wish you the very best of luck.

Well this is my job right now looking for a part time job..Hopefully I'll i will be able to make a full-time income before 6 months..But if you have a job and want to fire your boss. I would say don't leave that job until you have replace your monthly income plus more of at least 2-6 consecutive months..Like when your replacing your income from IM cut down your hrs to part-time and then slowly leave your job unless your replacing your annual income every month then quit the next day!

This is exactly what will get you there. There is not, quit your job today and replace your income tomorrow. I too am inching closer each month. It just takes dedication and to know what the hell you are doing. Even then its realistically a slow, conservative process.

I know what I need to quit my day job, but I am also grateful for my job with this struggling economy.

As for online success, I highly recommend working with a coach/mentor that will give you one-on-one attention basically.

I have had a couple, some good and some bad. However, a person to work with one-on-one is the ingredient to fast success.

Congrats on the next step. You will now most likely have much more freedom than the typical 9-5. Just remember to treat your online business when working from home as your at the office. If you do this your success will be greatly increased.

2 months from the time I started back at it again. About 4 years ago I had come across IM throuhg Wealthy Affiliate. Learned some stuff and was making decent money. Unfortunately, my personal life took me away form growing my business.

At the beginning of the year I came back into the community with my eyes open ready to learn everything again and about a month ago I quit my "real" job..

On schedule to make over $50k this year which is almost double what I was doing at the 2am-9,10,11,12 job I had. Talk about crappy hours, not knowing when your going to get off is the real killer.

    Love making my own schedule!!

hello all this is my first post too.

I gave up my job 4 years ago, I built up an understanding of ppc 2 years before this and used it when I left, I then travelled for a few months before starting the business in time for xmas and did well. 4 years on the rules have changed and I have had to build proper sites. I don't ever want to go back to work again in an office so this is my motivation to keep going, I also figure I would never be able to work hard for anyone else.

I've been in the internet marketing field for a little over 2 years and I'm now at about $15,000/month. I know it may not be so much but I worked pretty hard for 3 solid months to set up my PPC. I used push button software to do the rest.

Cool. That million was from that ONE product? Is that the product in your signature? Also, your have to share your profits with the programmer forever? Why not just pay him once?

I always thought about creating a product, but isn't customer service a headache and legal issues?

I'm not going to share all of my secrets here but I will admit that I am not a programmer and wouldn't call myself a website designer. I have a little more then basic knowledge in web design but know nothing about programming. So what did I do to overcome this? I basically recruited a great programmer that I found online through "GetaFreelancer" now known as "Freelancer" (WF won't let me post a link yet). I worked out a profit sharing deal and 5 years later we are still at it. =)

    Some interesting points guys, thanks.

I think that getting to the level of generating even $200 a week helps you tolerate a day job you don't like with a boss you like even less!

I can see that being methodical and having self-discipline is a must.

I am 43 years old and never punched a time clock. I have been online for over 12 years. Although it is unimportant what I make .. I have made enough online consistently for most to quit their day job.

Internet marketing was something that just came easy to me. Admittedly I had some great coaches and still am not beyond listening to those that know what they are talking about.

IM was always just another money stream as I own some off line stuff also. At least until this week.

I woke up about 4 months ago and old injuries came back to haunt me. I had no feeling in my left side. Walking over 10 ft at a time just wasn't happening. Typing for over 5 minutes had my left hand swelled to the point of not working anymore for hours.

Finally(hopefully) I am back to my old self enough to work online again full time. The off line stuff requires more physical attention than what looks like I will ever be able to perform again.

I started again yesterday online and made enough money in a couple of hours to pay for a reseller and dedicated server ( for a couple of months) that was about to get suspended.

See huge need to get a residual base going and some set and forgets as doing website promotion and traffic generation for others is lucrative but ... when you stop working it doesn't take long for the money to quit coming into the PP.

I have a lot of resources available to me as I always reinvested pretty heavily back into the online business and since I made a business out of promotion and generation ... should not have a problem getting traffic to some affiliate offers while I set up some membership type sites.

I also give up my day jobs and now I open my own business with my friend. So I have flexable work time. Though I am just beginning, I feel very comfortable, it is okay. If I have time, I also find a part time job.

  • Mixalis,

I was pretty much like you, for about a year and a half.

Then I lost my job, had to sell my car and computer and things were looking pretty bad.

I guess what happened was, my back was against the proverbial wall.

You can do a lot more than you think you can when you HAVE TO.

So in a two month period of time I went from $100 a week to full time income.

Now I make a full time living online, but never forget to treat it as a biz, and not a hobby.

And I NEVER forget how it SUCKED answering to some idiot or idiots who were not a tenth as intelligent, good-looking, funny or humble as myself when I had a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke).

Actually, is IS easy precisely because of a solid plan or system! If you DON'T have a solid plan or system, THAT'S when it's hard. A good system will shave YEARS (and save you big $$$) off of your learning curve

That's why I recommend investing in at least one good, comprehensive IM course (or mentor who will give you such a system) instead of jumping from one $37 e-book to the next. A lot of people here complain about not being able to make any money. But neither are they willing to invest in their business.

The best thing I ever did was invest in a comprehensive IM course aimed at REAL business owners, not just other IM wannabes. Yes it was $1500. (Now it's only $997. ) But it was truly some of the best A-Z IM info I ever bought. Everything else I've learned since has simply been plugged into this system.

Get a solid plan or system and then work the plan!

I think it is great if you can regard your day job as some form of security whist you get started, I come across so many who think they will sack the boss in two months, not going to happen.

Just keep studying and applying what you learn and you will get their in the end, just a tip for you as I got stuck with this, dont spread yourself to thin, be consistent with your promotional activities no matter what.

    Good luck

Funny this post should show up - my new blog (I only launched it on Monday) is all about my ultimate aim, which is to quit my job!

I echo the sentiments of others when it comes to being conservative in quitting your job. You're only going to leave employment once, so make sure you get it right, and don't take unnecessary risks.

yes.. info over load is what every newbie will go tru.

    why?
because we naturally want to know everything and do everything or we want to know everything so we think we can make the right or best decision and go with it.

BUT in the process of going tru this huge pool of info out there not to mention junks that hinder you, some people just lose steam and give up or just giving their 2nd best in this IM.

    Thus nv getting much results.

you would want to get just a rough idea of everything enough to make a decision and once u made that decision go ALL OUT to master it.

No amount of preparation can give u success..

its the experience which u have to make that 1st step.

[ you can read up all on how to swim but if you nv start jumping in the pool you will nv be good at it. but of cos jump near the side for guidelines. ]

Until recently, I worked in the IT industry. Unfortunately, my employer made an error in mine and a few colleagues' contracts which enabled them to not pay us for out of hours work we did. Not nice!

Anyway, my day job was becoming my day and night job! Sure it paid the bills, but as CoolAromas said, it was just over broke and demanded too much of my own time.

My point is I'd happily look for a less demanding/stressful day job and accept a pay cut in doing so, as long as I can study IM, SEO, PPC etc., work to a plan and try to go full-time once IM matches my income after say three consecutive months?

One thing's for sure, am I glad I joined WF.
      Thanks guys.

I've been full time since the tech bubble burst. I didn't quit to do this. I did this to be able to continue to work doing what I like to do. Many of the jobs that were available were no longer available.

What exactly is a non-techie webmaster? Webmasters, by definition, are techie.

Sorry, I can see the confusion I caused. What I meant to say was non-technical people, not webmasters or web developers. Basically anyone without such professional capability whos's managed to master IM (website, SEO, PPC etc) to the level that they could earn a full-time income.

    As others have already stated.

Have a plan and stick at it.
Set aside time as like its a job you HAVE to go to. If you allow yourself to be pulled from side to side, you will never make it.

Be strict with your time management, turn off the emails, forget the forums for certain times of the day. Allow yourself "play time" to go read in the forums.

Cut your teeth on some work, become a freelancer if you have to and have no money to invest. Then as you make money, even $50, invest right back into your business, do not spend on luxuries at home or Internet Marketing products promising you the world for your $27 investment.

If you invest every cent you make on your business productivity and outsource what you are weak at and what takes all your time (repeat tasks) you will soon build your empire.

    Focus on:

    Quality
Traffic (learn this skill as soon as you can)
    Follow up
    Over delivery
    Keeping Promises
Remember your customers are your customers
    Ask for referrals
    Ask for testimonials
    Learn from Mistakes
Help Others if and when you can
    Repeat what works
    Ditch what does not
Keep a swipe file of triggers that make you almost purchase (remember what we said earlier up this post DONT buy stuff you dont need!)

Never Give up on your Dreams
