Warriors linking to their sites in sig...

... who are not doing it to promote their IM related service, I have a genuine question for you: why?

I'm wondering what the potential benefit is (this is a genuine question). For warriors who are linking to their IM site where they're offering product/services to other IM'ers then yeah, the benefits are pretty obvious in doing it. But otherwise, I'm not seeing the benefit/payoff (of any kind) for those in other niches.

What am I missing?

    I don't have any IM services to offer, but have a fair few hits from WF to my niche sites
    Why wouldn't I advertise my sites, people have interests outside of IM

      They may be doing it for backlink value, not direct traffic. That's why you see so many pointless one-liners with ten unrelated sites in the sig.

    Interesting results so far:

    1 answer that its for interest based traffic from warriors
    2 answers that its for backlink SEO.

    When I posted the question I wondered if it was for the first reason given (direct traffic), but suspected it was mostly for the second reason given (SEO ranking).

    Maybe they are affiliates only and dont want to link direct to the affiliate in case of being thrown off or they could be a niche that they don't think people would be interested in???

    Though I do meet many wf members that are just starting out and haven't reached that point yet.

    Though I do agree with you that it is a waste not to.

      The opportunity exists to do that, so it would be wise to do so. WF has a great way of cultivating mutual benefit...

      Indeed, link directly to affiliate products isn't allowed here, but linking to your own blog, in which you promote an affiliate product, is completely allowed.

        This is a case of my seeing the benefits for those who are in the IM and SEO niches, but again not really seeing how this traffic would be profitable (directly or indirectly) for other niches.

        I'm on the fence about doing it. My own niche is very focused (a chronic pain niche in health & well being), and I'm not promoting an affiliate there (at least not yet), unless you count Amazon.

        I guess I'm asking because I'm weighing benefits (SEO and maybe some useful traffic as a bonus) versus possible unintended side effects. Not being in the IM or SEO niches, linking to my site from here I'm resistant to in a way that I have no reservations doing elsewhere, because here I talk about things related to its internal workings (SEO strategy, back link buildng, etc), my plans in the works for marketing it, etc. Nothing in any of that which isn't already well known or any kind of secret thing; but its all things I don't do anywhere else, including the forum I'm using as a traffic building tool (and the ones I'll expand into later on).

        That's where the reservation comes in: its like owning a shop where on the walls you display your quarterly earnings, what you pay your staff, a list of your wholesalers, and how much markup you're applying.

        Maybe I'm over-thinking that and its really not an issue at all. But that its something I've thought of doing - but held back on - is the reason I began the thread. At this point my reservations haven't been overcome and I'm still on the fence. Maybe that will change in time, and it also might be my newest to IM as well and confidence related: as I gain experience and the site grows, these reservations may very well vanish of their own accord.

    I personally don't because I don't feel like giving everyone my niches, but that's a personal choice :-p

      Guess a lot of people take this stance.

      Hopefully, someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think those who are involved in affiliate niches as well as IM niches would only show their IM links in signatures.

      Most peeps seem to prefer to play their cards close to their chest so as not to give niche secrets away, but will advertise their services, etc

    I was convinced after reading the second round of posts, particularly the one I replied to on over-thinking it. After posting my reply I went into my CP and added my site to my signature. So yeah, their replies were all the convincing I needed.

    I've always had a link to one of my sites. It allows people to find out a little bit more about me and even in non-IM niches, the links seem to get some traffic. I've been amazed at the number of clicks I get to each of my sites.

      It took a few replies, but it was a sincere question as I wanted to know the benefits before linking to my own site (and niche) on an IM board. After reading them, I saw the benefits and did it for all of those reasons. It might have seemed a silly question to some - yet I'm of the school of thought that if at first you can't find the answer, that the truly silly thing to do is refrain from asking the question to get the answer.

      Some others may want to hold their cards close so as to protect their "secret niche." That much wasn't an issue to me, as my niche is no big secret and no quick path to anything (other than exactly what its being built to be for the target audience).

    If you are having this much of a dilemma over ordering this or not then don't do it. Its really not something that you should be weighing around this much. Go with your gut, its usually the best call.

    Several of my friends have now reposted the link on their walls
    so it's now been exposed to a few thousand people who wouldn't
    otherwise have seen it.

    I don't know how much traffic that will bring you or if you'll
    make any sales but it's a bunch of exposure you wouldn't have
    gotten had you not posted the link!

    Well, we do get some traffic, but I believe that the main reason is exposure. Most IMers are trying to create a brand name. That I believe is one of the main reasons. Actually, another reason is to create a dialog with potential consumers. That is a great use of forum resources.

    There are alot of good sig links and bad ones. It all comes down to the copy you use as well.

    I must say that if someone posts really good insightful info in the post and know what they are talking about, then they deserve for you to go and check out what ever they are promoting.

      Remove the first post that you see. If someone comes looking for migraine advise they don't care how you are designing the site! They want to know about migraine. That post is irrelevant and will likely put people off before they even realise there is helpful content on your site.

      The rest of the site is good - don't spoil it.
