How would you monetize a high-traffic, general info site w/o a targeted audience?

Hi all, I found an EMD available for a term that has about 40,000 exact searches per month. On quick evaluation it looks as though it would be fairly easy to rank and get some decent traffic (I haven't dug deep yet, though). I imagine most visitors would hit the home page, see the fact they need, and leave without going further in the site, but I would put together maybe 5-10 pages of supporting content for the purposes of SEO (more if it turned into a worthwhile project - I'd start targeting longer-tail keywords).

It's not a targeted or buying phrase at all. It's a very general fact - something people would google just for general knowledge. People who are employed would be most inclined to search for it, but that's about the only common thread I can find. (sorry to be completely vague)

My question: how would you monetize sites like this? Thus far I've primarily focused on Amazon sites with keywords with heavy buying intent, so this is a new ballgame. Trying to figure out what I could do with a high-traffic site with random visitors - no specific demographic, no buying intent, etc. Would love any recommendations.

    Well, boo GoDaddy (or boo me for using them). That's where I found the availability of this domain name a couple days ago, and now they have it listed as a premium name for $300.

    I had that happen one other time, but I was relatively new and convinced myself that I had just missed that it was listed as premium when I checked it...

    Argh, no more GoDaddy for me. To NameCheap I go.

      If you see a domain name you like, register it right then and there. As long as it is available for registration, it is available for anyone to register it. So, don't hesitate. Do your keyword research BEFORE searching for available domains so that when you find a good one, you can grab it.

        Thanks Dan. I guess that's what I get for being indecisive!

        Anyone have input for my original question? There's a similar phrase with about two-thirds as many searches still available... thinking about grabbing it but again, not sure how I'd monetize it.

    Well, your description is a bit vague, so, the answer also might be, but you can put some mixed offers (freebies), on the site, for them to sign-up for, and that way start to build some new lists, in the respective niches. But again it depends on how broad an area the info/resource site covers.

    For a non-buying keyword, you can do one of a few things:

    -Adsense (although the CPCs may not be very high)
    -Generic offers (IM, get a free ipad, etc.)
    -Content locking (so for someone to see the page, they have to fill out some type of offer)

    But it is a bit of a bummer that GoDaddy changed the price on ya.
