I am helping a gym owner market his gym. The only things that I can think of are:

Grab an email address from every member to build a database to be able to keep them top of mind and to frequently ask for referrals as well as give them some kind of health/fitness/diet tip of the week.

Have special discounts for certain community groups.

Maybe throw some sort of new years resolution party at the gym and shoot out fliers to the healthy food stores, GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, the local farmers market as well.

Any other ideas to bring some members into this gym would be greatly appreciated!

    Brainstorm programs for different groups...

    Low-impact workouts for seniors
'Mommy & Me' classes for moms & toddlers
Get in shape programs for high school athletes
    Brown-bag programs for working people
Workouts related to specific sports, i.e. softball, beach volleyball, golf, etc.

The gym is going to have niches within the community, just as there are niches within online communities. Find them, serve them, and listen to the jingle (more likely beep, these days) of the cash register...

    More ideas:

Set up JV's with organic food stores, health food restaurants, etc. to cross-promote.

Try to sign up a local reporter or radio/tv personality to a free membership in return for reporting on their progress. The diet folks do this a lot...

May want to advise him to offer an incentive for those who subscribe to the mailing list. He can also sell gym clothing and other work out accessories to his gym members via his website and auto-responder.

You can create a blog and get 10,000 visitors per month and use it to advertise the gym. You can get the coaching program of Amy Bass at Thenicheblogger.com to do this.

Make sure he comes up in Google local search whenever someone is looking for a gym in his area.

I would say make a forum and let them interact. That works real well to get more and more members.

Get the gym to host fitness challenges. You can have the challenges for certain niches like local law enforcement agencies, or high school sports teams, or age groups, or males/females, etc...

This will get the gym to interact with the community.

Charge a fee for entry and decide how the money will be divided to the winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Some will go to the gym and you might get yourself a share as well.

I know a gym near me does this:

When a member joins, they refer 10 friends and then they receive a FREE gym bag, and water bottle after writing them down.

and then the gym rings your friends up and tries to get them to come in for a free tour.

You could do joint venture marketing ala Jay Abraham by offering clothing stores or health food stores free 30 day memberships to give to their best customers.

So say a customer buys a new suit, or $100 in health food supplies, he gets a free 30 day membership to the gym. You won't find many business owners to turn down this type of gift to their customers, and a if the gym is a good one, a percentage will stay on as members.
