ARGGHHH ... don't do this!

So today I thought to check on a domain I've been neglecting.

We're talking high value name that's short and to the point.

I go to the page, and it's not my site anymore?

Oh geez.

I let a two word domain slip out of my grasp and if I had anyone else to blame but myself I'd sock em in the face right now.

I highly recommend that you put your best domains on auto-renew.

This was NOT the way I wanted to start the day

(it's a fellow warrior no less than nabbed it - double bummer)

So crushed right now.

Renew for 5 or 10 years, that $100 investment might nudge your google ranking a bit too.

You didn't check for like 60 days? that reclamation period is a big pain when your on the other side.

Yep, I've seen the same affect on my end as well. It's a bit of an investment when you've got close to 500 sites, but at the end of the day it's still the same determination: what is a business "keeper" of a site, and which ones should just go by the wayside.

Yeah, I had a big renew day and did a bunch.. just overlooked that one.

Being a warrior here, I hope they at least put it to good use...but I'll be watching intently (waiting)!

Interesting, I've never heard this before. Google checks to see how far ahead the domain is registered?

Yes, if a domain is registered for a longer period of time then it will give more trust in Google and rank easier

Never heard of this. If this is true, it does make sense to renew domains for a longer time period.

haha- we have this happen on a regular basis.

key is- put all your settings on autorenew if you like to go year to year.. but.. as mentioned above- if you REALLY like the domain, but it for 10+ years!

I feel your pain. Had that happen a few times. I even read the reminder emails. I keep everything on auto renew now.

That's terrible! Sorry to hear that happened...that must be depressing to say the least. Thanks, though, for making us aware that this could happen. It's a good reminder to keep up on such matters.

I do try to keep mine on auto renew, but just wondering, is there not a grace period on domains?

I'm logged in to my registrar on my second screen as I'm writing this and changing all my domains to auto-renew. Sorry that happened and thanks for the heads up.

There is and usually that's sufficient but if you got a prime domain, don't risk it. Stuff comes up, and things happen. I could have easily sold it for years and years worth of renewal fees, instead of losing it for dollars on the open market.

In my particular case, I switched computers and my emails were going to Outlook via my virtual windows machine. I hadn't logged into check in a while because I had done a mass renew already on a bunch of domains. Guess I missed one.
