Are Facebook Content Lockers Ethical?

Hello Everyone,

I have received a few emails lately about some plugins that
lock your content until someone likes it

Maybe ethical is not the word I am looking for...perhaps inneffective?

If I was someone comming to a page, there is no way I would like something before I read it

Isn't that putting the cart before the horse?

Am I missing something here?

Just curious what your thoughts are

-Mark

There is definitely something about it that puts me off too. I won't like anything that I don't actually like, and I don't know if I like something until I actually see it. I've seen people selling the plugins, but I've yet to come across any content that's locked like that. If I do, I'll be sure to hit the back button right away.

I personally don't think that Facebook does this, but then again the content itself isn't visible unless a few like it. I wouldn't call it unethical but I do dislike it. In the end I don't think there is a better way to control all the spammers.

I think it's probably along the lines of squeeze page thinking. That what I have as the page owner is so good, you have to like me or give me your email address before I let you see it. Sometimes, it really is that good.

I have gotten some emails offering me a nice discount on something if I would like the page, but those are mostly from regular businesses, not so much IM, Just got another one this mornng offering me a nice discount on a wine gift basket if I like their facebook page.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of these, and I agree with you. I wouldn't "like" something just to get access to it (maybe there are exceptions, but it would have to be something super amazing...lol).

Not only that, doesn't it kind of smack of desperation for likes? Like they created the content just because they're trying to build up their likes?

Maybe not, but that's the impression I would have if I saw it in use.

This is the exact same thing as a squeeze page. BUT, with Facebook if you decide that you don't like it you can just UNLIKE the page. With Squeeze pages you don't know if they sold your address or added you to other lists. That's not going to happen with Facbook.

I use it JUST LIKE a squeeze page.

Using the Facebook Welcome HTML/FBML app, I create a new page to offer a free gift in exchange for liking.

Once they "like" I present them with two options.

Option 1: Link to instantly download the free gift.

Option 2: An Aweber signup form with the option to get the free book, plus an upgrade (like an expanded video or something), in exchange for signing up to the list.

It has been a very effective tool to get both "likes" AND list sign-ups.

I could see it working as a less-effective way of using an opt-in to guard a free ebook or something like that. Instead of "enter your name and email", you get "like this" and who knows, it might be OK.

For regular content, though, it just seems like a huge turnoff. I'd never recommend something through facebook that I haven't read myself.

It works wonders with videos. I saw many websites that went viral just because they had those lockers and interesting / funny videos on them. You can make your website viral over night.

I am of the personal opinion that this is unethical.

So I personally don't do it.

On other pages, if I click "like" and don't actually like what I see, I can always "unlike" the page.
