Launching a Site forum

Hey guys

I wanted to run something past you.

On my gaming site I want to launch a forum but not sure about the best way to go about it.

I have some Duke Nukem swag to give away and was thinking about a competition.

What other things could I do to get traffic to it and for them to sign up?

for a new forum, I usually hire some posters. They post relevant topics and do replies and slowly but surely members join up and start contributing.

I suggest doing the competition after members start coming.

And use a nice theme. Nothing turns off a new visitor more than the default theme they've seen a thousand times. If you're using vbulletin, you gotta get vbseo. There is much hype from the devs, but it actually does help a great deal.

    thanks retsek

I have currently got simple:press installed and I think it look not bad. Working my way through the CSS files slowly changing colours to match the rest of the site.

I will have to look into hiring post writers. Have you got any recommendations?

    Try Fiverr.

There's alot of them that do it. The gem that I found is longer providing the gig, so i cant suggest a seller.

I have found that launching a succesful forum is one of the most difficult things to accomplish.

Typically, the only way to get a forum off the ground is to find 5+ friends to become active members in the forum. Once there is a bit of content, you can try PPC advertising or some other method of gaining traffic and grabbing new members.

That being said, finding 5+ friends who can be bothered helping you create a forum is pretty rare so hiring posters (or creating a lot of fake accounts and talking to yourself) is the first step.

If your super lucky, maybe you could find a partner with a related list to promote the forum?

    Good luck, keep us posted!

We have quite similar situation as we also stared a forum as a new addition to already existing website. First six months were really quiet but once people stared to join then it gradually stared to get busier and busier. If you don't give it a boost yourself then it will take long time to get the forum going. So what we did is we also stared a competition and it seems to start working now as we have been getting lot of new users and finally there is quite a lot of activity now and I hope it will stay that way once the contest is over. I think that you should try the contest and see if it works. As much as I have noticed in other forums, the posting contest always seems to give forum a boost. Just try to make the competition interesting, that would encourage people to link to it and would help you to get new users and helpfully more people will post and take part of it. For example, the main prize we offer in our forum posting contest is 10 million and that has really attracted lot of links and social media attention.
