GoDaddy Sold to Leveraged Buyout Firm KKR

As reported by the NY Times:

Go Daddy to Sell Itself to K.K.R. and Silver Lake - NYTimes.com

Likely means big changes are coming to GoDaddy, who apparently was not doing as well as it could have performed. I'm guessing unprofitable services will soon be jettisoned.

Sorry Laurie. You clearly sounded put out by the upsells, but if you are not, didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I have never used their hosting, only purchased my domain names there.

Their upsells are no worse than half the CB products now. Or even some of the WSO's.

I like GoDaddy for domain registration, I don't get anything else there and their propagation is fast. Could be others are just as fast, but I know their's is pretty quick.

C'mon...most of us have to endure those "annoying" popups, especially when you leave a sales page. Sometimes I don't know whether to click "OK" or "Cancel" so that I can leave the site once and for all.

I think Godaddy's upsells are less annoying than those popups and other tactics employed by some IMers. I'm already familiar with all their upsells that I can easily breeze through the domain registration process without even reading. LOL. Never had a problem with being overcharged.

I like Godaddy because I can buy a domain name for $1 using their promotions. I can definitely afford to buy their domains at the regular price but sometimes my projects get delayed because I put too much time on other more important ones. I had a number of domains that I allowed to expire because I wasn't able to develop them. With Godaddy's cheap domains, there's less money wasted in case I won't be able to develop some of my domain names.

This. I've got wellllll over 500 domains through them (active) and have had more through the years as well. It works great for me right now and see no reason to move off that platform.

There are WAY too many extras that you can get for free with some top hosting companies. Yeah sure you might save a few bucks registering when they're running a special but in the end you're seriously paying out the ass with hosting, shopping carts etc.

Their dedicated servers are about half the price of hostgator, with no restrictions. I've never found a problem with GD once you look past their upsells. Of course no one here upsells

Their DNS handling couldn't be easier. And propagation is usually within minutes, not hours. I guess it depends on what you are looking for, but I'll stick with them if their prices don't change and they leave me alone to do as I want, like they have.

There is no rational reason for using Godaddy as a host. Worst hosting and worst hosting support ... bar none. It's so bad and so user unfriendly that I don't support Godaddy hosting when I offer installs for my sites I sell. You got Godaddy hosting? Hire someone else to install it. Called up Godaddy hosting for what should be a simple Wordpress install and just got ... we don't provide support for Wordpress. Hostgator, hostmonster and others ... simply click one button (Fantastico) and it's done.

As for domains ... never had a problem with domain registration. You can get some steep discounts through coupon codes that aren't available elsewhere.

Well, I did have issues with hosting wordpress and they did tell me that I will have to check out the wordpress support site but many times they have helped me with the installation since at least a few years.

Godaddy hosting is great and the support has been excellent. I doubt the others would provide such a great service and the UI of godaddy is amazing! The features are excellent and I really think people who use fantastico will have to understand the godaddy system before they use it. Yes, it took me a few days to understand how it works but once I got it, it's a bang for the buck.. I feel it's a marvel and it's superb.

I agree. That's the exact combo I've had for a few years now with hundreds of domains. all without any support issues. Excellent customer service. Had GoDaddy before that and they were awful. Had to pack a lunch just due to the time in getting through all the upsells.

Laurie, quite a few people talk about how great Godaddy is for the one reason that few talk about. It has an affiliate program and they make money when they can con someone into signing up with them.

What self respecting IM'er would turn their nose at an affiliate commission, regardless of how crappy the services actually are?

Surprising for me because KKR isn't traditionally a heavy pure online tech player. Most of their portfolio is traditional business.

Henry Kravis is an interesting guy... fascinating story about the whole RJR Nabisco buyout. Written as a book called "Barbarians At The Gate" which was turned into a movie in the early 90s starring James Garner.

I'll be interested if they can clean things up a bit and make the purchasing process quite a bit smoother.

The last time I registered a domain with GoDaddy, it felt like a circus act...one hoop after another hoop.

While I'm sure they make a mint from those who do take advantage of all those upsells, it can get quite annoying when you're just trying to hop in and make a purchase quickly.

Wow the IM world is getting a lot of shake ups this week. Seems a bit like the offline world with earthquakes, big ones, happening every week some where in the world. Amazon pulls the plug on Californian affiliates and now GoDaddy sells itself off to the highest bidder. GoDaddy has been an OK service for me, don't use them solely, but I never liked their advertising antics. Scantly clad, beautiful women holding join GoDaddy signs for web hosting... or some message plastered across their tank tops two sizes too small for the ample breasts.... well you get the picture.

Final thought: the one thing that I have been reminded of again this week with all that has been going on is the fact that nothing remains the same for long in IM. Especially in IM!! Just when you think you've got it all worked out the landscape changes over night.

Keep moving, keep adapting, keep learning, keep on keeping on!

I got over a 100 domains with GD and some with Enom.

I have never had the opportunity to get to know the CEO of either company and I couldn't care to get to know them as well.

I have never had issues with either companies and all work fine. I only use Godaddy to buy domains and crab some specials

I have never paid more than $8 for a domain both renewal and new registrations

GD have +- 12-15 $1 domains special every year

You can get one for $1 --- Use the code PATRIOT1

So all you moaners go there sharp and get one......I know you use these specials

I use GoDaddy and also promote their web registration and hosting as an affiliate. I've never had an issue with them, my sites never go down, etc. after using them for a few years. I get .COMsfor under $9 a year, hosting for something like $4 a month.

They do have a few upsells when you try registering a new domain and all that, it just takes a couple of seconds to click past them, I don't see what the big deal is. I guess other people have had horrible experiences with GoDaddy hence all the hating on them, but I've never had issues myself.
