Google+ Hangout is going to be huge for IM.

I truly believe that Google+ Hangout (and maybe other services that come of it) is going to seriously become a better option than anything available right now such as Gotomeeting and Skype. From what I understand it will be very powerful and easy to use and I am really excited to see what it can do.

Who feels the same or thinks otherwise?

It's just coming out that Facebook will be announcing Skype-powered video chat next week. I still expect Google's version to be more powerful and because of the integration with all of Google's business products like docs, analytics and everything else, it will still be huge.

I was thinking that it would be pretty good for IM myself. I was about to post a thread seeing if anyone was interested in joining together in Google+ to chat and share information and such.

If you are on Google+, I'd be interested. If you are not in Google+ already and want an invite, I'd be willing to send you one. Although Google keeps turning it on and off to limit the amount of new invites. So it might or might not let you in. But I'm game.

          Invite on the way.

Just a reminder, I need your gmail address to invite you, but you can send it via PM if you prefer.

Also, they are doing invites differently with Google+. To invite, you have to post a message in Google+ with that email address as a recipient. An email is sent to that person with a link to see what Google+ is about. You have to follow that link and complete the signup process to get added.

However, Google closes the invite process occasionally so it might not let you in right away. I'll do what I can.

I'll most definitely use Google Hangout for organising online teams. What a great way to reach a group of people simultaneously and present content via Youtube videos.

I wonder if they will enable simultaneous viewing of .pdf and .ppt files in the future. This would be amasing!

      No. It's pretty easy.

There are "softcams" that stream videos over webcam applictions.

Visit fiverr, CL or wherever, purchase a small video of someone fake talking/smiling/whatever or record someone elses. Then loop it.

Instant fake girl to say "oh if you want me to do that, join my site"

Some softcams let you switch between videos so you could have a lot of premade clips.

      With that said.

I do not do nor condone this. I only told you how because most people don't know and fall for videos.

    Really? Honestly?

Well here is my take on it. Like many other company's google is not different, if you spread yourself to thin you set yourself up for failure.

Google has launched many things over the years and lets face it, some comes off half baked, and flops within no time at all. Your a search engine. Email provider, this that and the other. Where will it end? Strive to better your existing business models before jumping into another market.

I've used voice too. I was pretty impressed by it. As to the other issue raised about Google spreading themselves too thin, and them being a Search Engine that should stick to that, I disagree.

They began as a search engine, now they're probably the premier marketer on the net with Adsense and Adwords and how they're increasingly implementing them in more products and with laser precision. G-mail is a good example: it is getting almost creepy with how they place side bar text ads that tie in with whatever the email is about.

I remember back when I was young and dumb and was introduced to Google after years of using Altavista and Lycoos, both of which were riddled with graphical banner ads, and then seeing just a simple logo and search bar ihnstead on G. My first thought was this is amazing! My next was how can they afford to do this and how can they ever make money on it? I assumed they'd go the route of banner ads like everyone else was doing then once they built up a loyal base.

Not only wrong on that account, but never dreamed they would become more powerful than MS and Yahoo combined.

That they failed at many things doesn't mean they fail with everything. It only means they develop lots of things - which is good! They had a few winners, and if they keep developing they will have more winners.

You can use just voice or text in G+ Hangouts too. You don't have to use the video.

I will say this, it's already HUGE for networking. Several high level G brass, including Senior VP's regularly host Hangouts and if you see one in your stream you can join, as long as there isn't 10 people in already. The popular ones fill up fast, but people usually drop out after some time to let others in.

I saw one last night that a Senior G VP hosted, and the first person to comment in the thread was Tom from MySpace (yes, he's on G+, as is Zuckerberg), saying he didn't have a webcam to join. How cool would that be to have been in a Hangout with Vic from Google and Tom from MySpace (had Tom been in there of course)?

It is certainly true that a lot of the time on the internet the last thing someone wants is to be seen. Here are some reasons I don't want to be seen often when interacting with clients:

-I might rather be sitting shirtless at my computer on a hot day, the last thing I want to have to do is dress up and comb my hair to impress a client. There exist some reasons I don't get an office job.
-I can cook dinner while talking to a client
-I am probably a bit younger than someone would expect.
-I can easily Google things I don't know
-I can be a tad shy when I am talking face to face to people. I am more extroverted online in general.

Despite all that I do see a ton of value in easy video chat. Certain interactions would just be made much more easily. Communication is key and it can sometimes be very hard with text only.

They turned off the official invite system Wednesday night. The backdoor that everyone has been using still works, but they're limiting the number of people that they let in every hour. Some people get in on the first try, others have to try multiple times.

According to Robert Scoble (RWW), Google said that they're only letting in people with strong social graphs right now, but I'm not sure I buy that 100% based on some of the "characters" that I've seen in there. I mean "characters" literally, I saw a "Ghost Rider" fella in there yesterday. That said, he is a very highly connected source, and is usually spot on with his info.

      I totally agree.

I'm also curious to see how Google+ is going to affect Android mobile phones and tablets. If they add some pretty cool new features I might just switch back to an android phone from my current iPhone. :p

I honestly just do not see Google+ taking off.

... people are just too attached to Facebook to move on to another social networking site. It is going to take a monumental effort on the part of Google to even begin to enjoy a piece of the figurative social networking pie.

Google is pretty much the god of the internet. I really don't doubt they're capabilities to out do Facebook. Its kind of like how Facebook punked on Myspace ...there is always something new to come around and replace an old idea with a new one. That's just my opinion on it. I am excited to see what happens with this Google + stuff.

It's not just G+ vs FB, it's all of Google vs FB. Google is shifting gears big time and making the entire Google experience social, from G+ to search and everything in between. With a few hundred million Gmail users already, it's not that difficult to see G+ rivaling FB in a year or two.

G+ is getting rave reviews from everyone that's had a chance to get inside and poke around, including Tom from MySpace and other major players in the social space.

The social game just got interesting, and Google is in fact launching a monumental effort.

Check out this post I made in one of the other threads (and read the two articles I linked to and quoted from), and you might look at things a little differently...

I got my invite but the link in Google's email gave me a 404. It said in the email that if it doesn't work I should check back soon.

I use Google Voice. I have even integrated my Google Voice with my Sprint phone now. So, my Google Voice number is my Sprint phone number, and my Sprint phone gets all the Google Voice features (even the Google Voicemail instead of my Sprint's voicemail).

The same could have been said about MySpace vs. Facebook a few years back. And as Jeffery noted, Google is making their entire brand a social experience... This is something that was not done with Google's last two social attempts.

So, yeah... Google has a great shot to rival FB this time around because of the model set into motion. However, one of Google's top Social Research analysts, Paul Adams, that worked with Google on it's whole "social circle" research is now working at FB as a research analyst. Take a look at the research he did for Google:

No Clue why this is trying to embed the slide... Just click on the slide's view, and it will take you to the slide on Slideshare.

Then compare the results with Google+'s model. It's a GREAT read! And, yeah, he's one of the minds behind all of this and now he is working for Facebook. So, perhaps this is why FB is launching some new features that are similar to some of the BIG features of Google+? Like Google+ Hangouts and FB using Skype/Vid...? Who knows, but what we do know is that a leading researcher for Google+ is now working for Facebook ;-)

So we will see how it goes.

Just another reminder. If you want an invite, I HAVE TO HAVE YOUR GMAIL EMAIL ADDRESS!

I keep getting messages from people asking for invites, and they don't send me their Gmail address. So, if you don't send me the gmail address you will not get an invite. Pretty simple. Sorry for the caps, but it's a tad frustrating. Especially since I've already said this a few times in this thread.
