Trademarked Product Names in Root Domains

There seems to be a few affiliate training courses that have come out recently that teach its buyers to use domain names that have the full product name in it. For example if you want to promote the "Sony sxl 9000 webcam" in organic search, these teachers recommend to buy the domain "sonysxl9000webcam.com" and use it to create your affiliate content site.

Is this legally sensible, or will Sony soon be calling the domain owner?
Yes, I know I should not take legal advice from a forum. I am just looking for anecdotal evidence that supports or rejects that method.

You have to read the rules that sony has, maybe they might not have an issue with you using their name in your domain name, read first and then act, if you do buy a domain that offends sony then you better hand it over quick or take it offline, don't take that risk.

Hi - My view is that Sony (or anyone else for that matter) will not complain if you are selling their product only. When you populate said domain with other ads, then icebergs approach. I also think that having a brand name in a domain name is a short term strategy, so one should not invest too much time and effort into any one venture (because brand owner has right at any time to ask for it to be taken down).

Hope this helps. All the best, Allen

It's not a good idea to do that. While you may get away with it with some companies, others are much more aggressive in trademark protection. Plus, even companies that are cool with it today may have a management change that would end that. So, it's not worth the risk unless you're going for quickie short term, churn and burn profits.

It's much safer, and just about as effective, to simply use a generic domain name and have title meta-tag and a H1 tag with the product name. You can even take a domain that's named something like "this-junk-domain-i-bought.com" and make this work provided you build the right anchored links to the site.
