Is this a good idea for an amazon authority/review site?

I've been reading a huge amount on this excellent forum, but still can't decide where to start with my first site

It seems that google is moving towards authority sites, so is this a viable plan for a new amazon authority/review site? Pick a general site subject for example 'electric guitars' which has a lot of competition and I'm not likely to rank highly for and also does not have much commercial intent. But there is a lot that can be written about the subject which will have no ads to please google and then try to rank for less competition keyword phrases like people searching for particular string brands, or guitar amplifiers etc. So I guess I don't expect to rank for my primary keyword but just work on secondary long tail keywords.

Is this a bad idea?

    Hi Darell,

In my opinion your idea is valid, however, when purchasing a domain name - consider finding a keyword that is not too competitive, but still receives a fair share of monthly traffic. This will make it that much easier to rank for that keyword. Also, be sure that the domain keyword can be expanded upon and related to other keywords of the same subject.

I hope you see what I'm trying to say here.

    Good luck!

You are thinking too much. Just pick a category of products. Write reviews and build backlinks.

The yardstick often taught in many courses is the number of sites using " " in google, but your real competition is the top 10 sites on google for your keyword.

One of sites make money on Amazon from keywords which i did not initially target. So my advice would be to just get on with it.

Enough backlinks and google is going to reward you.

Darrell, this is actually one of the Old School approaches that is making a comeback. It lends itself to a tiered approach in your site structure, like this:

Home Page --> optimize for competitive keyword

Tier 1 -----------> optimize for longer tail, less competitive keywords with good volume

Tier 2 ------------------> Optimize for long tails

Do your internal linking properly, and as time passes and you keep adding content, you'll see your rankings rise on your Tier 1 and Home pages, for the more competitive keywords.
