How IP addresses are used

Hey, this may not be the best forum for this topic but it is the closest I can find. Any responses to these questions will be greatly appreciated.

Here are my questions.
Can 2 computers have the same IP address? Can you use an IP address to trace the physical address of a computer? For example, if I use one of my computers for a transaction online, can you use the IP address to trace the transaction back to me if I don't provide my personal information?

Thanks guys for helping.

For the most part each computer is assigned a unique public ip address. People can trace back to your computer via your ip address. That's why people use firewalls. If you are connecting to the internet through a router it acts as a basic firewall.

You might want to go to google and do a search for ip addresses, firewalls, proxy servers, etc to learn more.

I think it is simple one IP per households so even if you are using roughter the IP is the same of what the other household using it.

Well even though the IP address from the same household might be the same even with the use of the router, each computer from the house still gets a unique ip address after, but the first two digits are the same.

So it can still be traced back to that ip address but I don't think it can be traced to a household without the complicity of the Internet provider company.

    The short answer is YES.

Your IP address will be traced back to your ISP and if the authorities have a warrant the ISP will give over all of its information on you including billing, credit cards, bank accounts, etc, what all they have.

    Hope that answers your question.

      Davy44,

I think what you're looking for are 'Level 1' and 'Level 2' anonymous proxies.
These by themselves will not protect you. Part of the information that is sent to a proxy server or website is what will identify you, things like your MAC address, operating system, browser and it's build number, screen resolution etc. etc.. These things create a unique 'footprint' identifying your individual computer. These are the things that will need to be 'spoofed' in order to keep you somewhat anonymous.

As far as IP's go, your computer has an internal IP address, this is the IP that your router uses to deliver info to your computer. Each, and every computer in your home will have it's own internal IP.

The external IP is the address assigned to your router/modem by your ISP. Each computer on your home network (modem/router) uses the same external IP address.

Above the external IP is where you would 'plug in' an anonymous proxy, your external and internal IP's will not be seen by the outside world..... Provided the anonymous proxy service is on the 'up and up'. What will be used to identify you is what I mentioned in the first paragraph.... MAC address, operating system, cookies, referrers etc. Again, these things would have to be changed (spoofed) to retain your privacy. The unique footprint is what ultimately will be used to identify your personal computer.

      HTH,

CyberSorcerer is correct. You can't have 2 computers with the SAME IP address on the SAME network. Not only can an IP Address be traced but the MAC Address can be as well which means that from the ISP they can trace to your home or business network then from there they can trace it to the exact computer.

I bought some traffic from Etrafficwizard.com. All my "hits" have the same IP address on my tracker. Does this mean that I am getting bogus traffic? Thanks for any help.

Same IP for each hit means that there is only one unique visit. You need IP diversity to count as real traffic.

I just learned that our router can change the IP address and take over the wireless radio outside. Caused some issues with the internet company until we found out how to stop it.

Yes your IP can be traced But it would take a court order to do it. Your ISP will have a record of the IP it assigned to your modem and there will also be a record of the IP the modem gave your router or PC if you are connected directly. If you are using a router then the trail pretty much stops at the router though nevertheless the IP given by your ISP has a physical street address associated with it. If you have people getting court orders then you're done.

BTW. 2 computer or devices can not have the same IP on the same network. it will crash the network The internet is network. But when you set up a router on your home network that basically gives you home network a DHCP server which gives every deice on the network a unique address.

If you go to a website like Whats Is A IP Address? Hide Your Ip Address, Ip Tools, My IP, Change IP, Anonymous Ip Address you can see it will indicate the same IP address from any PC inside your network. That's because all the Internet sees is your router's external port.

Computers inside your local network will typically get their IP addresses assigned by your router, which keeps track of the addresses assigned and "translates" the incoming responses from the Internet to the proper internal IP address which is not visible outside of your network.

Yes you can trace the IP address Back to you unless you use software to hide your IP address Why It Is Important To Hide Your IP Address and Surf Anonymously

    Hi,
Yes, Two computer should Have Same Ip address.Because of that you can find the Exact physical Addresss of an Ip Address. You can find only the city, state,Country,ISP provider and Latitude ,longitude co-ordinates of an Ip-Address using some free online sites like Ip-Details.com.So I ensure that no one can trace your Exact location using Ip Address. If you have Fear ,I recommend you to Hide your Ip-Address using proxy server to prevent from Hackers. So I think it will be usful yo you....

You will probably only have the 1 ip address for the home, but to track you down it's a combination of that ip address and the computers hardware. So, yes each computer can be tracked.

If I am not mistaken, provider will assign the same IP address to all PCs in your home, but internally they will have different IPs. And technically your address can be traced.

Yes, 2 computers can have the same IP address if they are on the same internal network using that network to access the Internet. Also, you can get tracked based on your router's MAC address. Finally, even within the same network each machine has a unique network ID.
