New computer blues, how do I get existing website back into Frontpage?

Okay I have new computer, I downloaded core ftp and downloaded my existing website
into my computer. I also installed my old copy of frontpage 98 (which I created the site with). That is where I get lost.


How do I get my website into Frontpage again? I know this should be easy by Frontpage keeps asking me for a username and password to get into my "root web" whatever that is.

Its been a long time since I did this, had someone doing the site for me, so give it to me in dummy terms.

    Been a very long time since I looked at Frontpage 98, but if you downloaded all the pages from your server onto your hard disk, you should simply be able to File>Open each page. This assumes that you know which directory you downloaded the pages into. Does that help or am I missing something from your question?

      Hi Russ. When I go into "my computer" I can see all of the files that were ftp'ed into my computer. But there is no "file open" option on frontpage that I can do anything with. I keep getting prompted for a username and password. Hmm, not sure where to go from here.

      any other options?

    If push comes to shove, you could always go to your website, hit source code, copy it, open a "New" page into FrontPage.

    Really? You should get to something like a blank page with a regular menu bar across the top, I'd think. At what point do you go to "my computer"? With a conventional File menu, Open option, you would not be looking at anything like "my computer".

    Can you do a screen grab, upload it, then post a link? I'll be happy to take a look and see if I see something.

      Hi Johnny,

      I know exactly what you mean. FP98 had that stupid server that pops up when you start the program. If that's not running you can't do anything. It always confused me, too. The password it's seeking is for that server.

      You probably don't see the server because if I recall, it just shows up as a small icon on your bottom menu bar of Windows. Look for that and click it - or right click to see if you get any options. See if there's anything there about passwords/usernames.

      Do you not have a newer version of FP? You can open your online site in your browser by asking to "open with... FrontPage". Not sure if you can do that with FP98.

      You might have to start a New Web in FP98 and see if that will let you create your password for the server. Does your program have a help index? Check there for 'server' or password and see if anything comes up.

      Unfortunately, I gave my manual away for FP98 when I got my new computer with FP2000 so I can't look it up for you.

        Oh. you asked about getting the web site into FP98...

        I just remembered that there is an "import web" feature. That's where you can bring an old web into the software. Again, I don't have the manual and I'm just going by memory so you'll have to scout around and see where everything is.

        Seems to me, when you open the program you get some sort of window to open an old site or start a new one. I think you have to get past that first to see where the import feature is. You'd probably have to "start a new web" first and then zip through those site creation options. Then, you can import your old web into that empty new one.
