Google Knol - PR7 Article Site

Knol - a unit of knowledge: share what you know, publish your expertise.

This site is a PR 7 article site. Why have I never heard of it in any SEO efforts? Is there a reason for this?

The articles you submit to it, if published, will still be on their own PR-0 pages, just as they are on every article site.

It's really not a "PR-7 article site". It's an "article site whose home page has a PR of 7". That would be good for your SEO if your articles were published on its home page, but I'm afraid they won't be.

Websites don't "have page rank": only pages have page rank.

I think there are two, but I'm only guessing:-

    (i) Its SEO value to you will be really negligible, because any backlinks you get from submitting work there will be only non-context-relevant, PR-0 backlinks, so it's not worth talking about (you might need 100,000 of those to give you the link-juice equivalent to that from one backlink from a relevant authority site ... no, I'm not exaggerating);

(ii) You became a member of this fine forum only a few weeks ago - but welcome!

the only reason i can give on this is it required a whole lot of effort. Initially the links are no followed and take a lot of posts from Google to allow you follow links. So you have to create quality content and not just crap...

    Alexa pretty much nailed it.

But I can assure you G Knol was (is) used by some people for SEO. If they get what they want, I really don't know...

Offtopic!!! Alexa, so the weird avatar is gone? Damn, that thing looked like a 80's disco.

Maybe I'm getting cynical, but the fact that much of what you read about SEO has to do with gaming Google might discourage people from recommending a Google property for that purpose.

Although that hasn't seemed to slow anybody down on YouTube, judging from the number of crappy "watch me read my article" slideshow videos...

It HAS been mentioned here before.

In fact when it launched - I create 50 knols for warriors for free just so some people to see what it was all about.

Knol is not really an article directory like EzineArticles. Knol is Google's "alternative" to Wikipedia.

Indeed ... it's clearly not an article directory at all. But nobody suggested it is: it's an article submission site, though.

While I haven't spent a ton of time with Knols, the time I did spend felt like a waste of time. I didn't see much value passed along and felt like Knol was the lost stepchild of Wikipedia that no one wanted to be around.

If anyones had success I'd love to hear it.

I made 1 knol back in 2008, and ignored it from then on. I don't think I did any backlinking to it. Since the knol is about precisely the same topic as my site it links to, it's a relevant link, with relevant anchor text.

It's now a PR2 page, and sent my main site 168 visitors last month. Interestingly, it's been doing better since Jan 2011, sending about 4 visitors a day. Since 2008, those visitors have made enough in Adsense revenue for me, for it to have been worth the time to write and post the article. That's an awful long payback time though.

When it first came out, I started to create an eBook on it. I had several Knols, it was easy to use, etc. All of them were unique content, had images, one link to a site, not spammy, etc.

Then one day my account is gone - POOF! I actually wind up interacting with the review process people and one contacts me directly to have a back and forth. They admitted they could find NO reason why it was shut down. They reviewed each Knol and saw zero violations.

So now that they admitted that, I'm thinking, restoration! Um no. Because the public had flagged all of my knols (someone went around flagging all of mine), they had to shut down the account.

    Huh?

Bunch of **** if you ask me.

Almost anything's better than an article directory, for SEO. And that's becoming more and more true all the time, as Google continues increasingly to reward relevance and quality with every algorithm-change it produces. But this is not really a question I ask myself, because HubPages and Squidoo aren't sites I can ever own and control myself. They're owned by companies who change their rules, TOS, policies and procedures all the time and can delete my pages there in the night, if they don't like them.

That's hardly the basis for building up a "secure business".

I have a knol; it's a 'grassy' one ... pretty useless, really. But then, it might come in handy for something, such as growing cauliflower.
