How would you start an online business with $10?

Hey guys,
I recently found this video on youtube where matt cutt's describes how he would start an online business with only $10..

he mentions how he would buy a domain and webhosting, in my opinion that seems a bit of a waste... You will loss all your money right away and you basically have one month to succeed or fail...

In my opinion i would set up a free wordpress.org blog or blogger blog as it would save quite a bit of money and you can spend it on link building.

just wondering what you would do!?

I'd buy a domain and hosting, every single time.

Agreed. Combine that with some quality keyword research before, and you will have half the battle won right there if you can pick up a good domain.

If I had to do it all over again I'd:

    1. Do something I love. Period. Forget about doing this for money... find something you're interested in and pursue that. Then figure out how to make money doing that. It takes a LOOOT of effort to keep doing something that you don't like to do. As much as you might hear to get into hot markets like Weight Loss, Love/Dating, Make Money Online, it's almost pointless unless you actually ENJOY doing those things... because you won't do the amount of work that you need to do to succeed.

    2. Focus on ONE thing. When I first started, I made niche sites for like 1000 different things.. eventually I found myself struggling to even update all of the wordpress installs, let alone produce content and manage the sites. It resulted in me making almost zero money.

    3. Outsource ASAP. Work ON your business, not IN it.

So, if I had $10 to spend on starting a business, I'd put it under my mattress until I figured out exactly what I wanted to do.

Then, I'd buy a domain, and hosting, and I'd focus solely on:

    - Producing content/products/etc.
    - Building a list/managing that list
    - Building a steady stream of traffic to fuel those two.

You blogger allows you to use your domain name for no charge, so you can buy your own domain name for a total cost of $10 for the year hosting on blogspot.

Whether it translates to any revenue is a bigger question.

Offering freelance services on the job marketplaces or fiverr seems more practical for a nearly nill budget.

      That really was funny ...lol

Technically, with $10 it isn't possible to start a business. But that $10 can be used to get some real starting capital.

I would use forums or communities like this to get some gigs. Yes, service all the way. I would probably offer something that I couldn't/wouldn't do for a long time. Like writing articles for $2/$3, help with link building etc. Idea here is to be patient and not picking up too many clients @ that rate, and treat them real nice. It might take a month or two to reach a couple of hundred dollars (which most people think is really sad), but now the initial investment is 10/20 times bigger with a very important perspective shift.

I did that and it worked for me. My first gig was for $50 and I spent a whole weekend on that (no kidding).

There could be better ways to do it, but that's how I did it. Even though it has been a while, I think it is still doable.

I would open paypal account and verify it, then start a gig on Fiverr for something that I don't need any money, like article writing or something similar. After earning some money I'd buy some software and offer my services. And then save up enough money to start my first project of 5 new websites. In the mean time learn everything I wanted to know, write all the content myself, find the keywords and products, find the outsourcers I'd use and then just do it.

And after first 5 websites, just do next 5 and then check how they are doing, write some new content if necessary and make some new backlinks. With 10 live websites with good seo ranking for keywords that are profitable. You can call your regular job goodbye.

Thing is, what could you really get for $10 anyway in terms of link building and gain significant results?
Better to begin as you mean to go on and treat it like a real business.
Hosting, domain name, $1 trial with Aweber.
Then use free tactics to drive traffic.

Well the questions was £10 (British pounds). At today's conversion that's $15.97 (USD). So for that amount, I would look for a good WSO for under that amount that would teach me how to make money online starting from nothing.

Hopefully there's some left over for a coke and a smile.

"Site + Domain" is absolutely right. Then borrow a dollar if you need to and get Aweber to start building your list.

As for "succeed or fail in one month," all you have to do is make sure you can afford to pay for hosting and Aweber next month, too. That's maybe $45, very easy to do if you put in the dedicated, focused work.
Oh really Mike? One month from scratch to make $45 per month?

Extremely unlikely. Although if you know something I don't, please share it with all of us.

I started offering video services. Of course I owned my own software and I had years of experience making motion graphics videos. But I got a free weebly site, did some freelance work, flipped that money into a wso and it was off to the races.

I'm with Amanda. I've started 3 months ago offering services (SEO/link building). I've earned just over $2,000 in the last 90 days (although I now pay $20/month for software to allow me to expand my services - pays for it selff 100 times over easy in my case).

All my extra money is being re-invested back into my business (now with 33 niche sites, not earning much, maybe $150 in the last 90 days).

I didn't start with any domains to start my business. Just posted on free forums to get my first clients.

Here is what I did my first time, and what I do each time I launch a new website:

I made a business that I was proud to tell my family and friends about. Period.

After all, if you wouldn't sell it to your Mom, your religious leader, and your own children, perhaps you should re-think your business? If you wouldn't sell it to your own child, perhaps you should consider something else.

I had immediate success because over the years I have built a strong foundation of trust and value with my family, friends, and church members.

Then, by going to the "leaders" of each group first-- such as my mother, who is the major influence of my family, and my preacher, who is the head of a large church with more than 2,000 families, I had nearly instant success... and the "coolest" member of my group of friends, of course, everyone listens to him.

From there, these "leader influencers" became not only my best customers, but also my best promoters.

Really expensive marketing... Just being an honest, truthful person who lives their life with integrity.

And while I do promote with AdWords and Articles and a few other good paid methods, and I am learning SEO, this method was, and continues to be, the most profitable thing I have done online.

          Hope this helps.

Hi Mike, sorry if I offended, but I've become quite cynical in my old age. If you have succeeded this way, then I apologise.

You are obviously in a quite unique stuation, with a large family and close knit Christian community.

The beauty of it is that people are more inclined to believe and trust you in that environment.

I wish you the very nest of luck.

            Alan,
No worries, apology accepted. I figured that you probably have been burned more than once, but I wanted to share the idea with you.

While I would certainly agree that a certain amount of the skeptic in you is a good thing, I would advise against cynicism. It tends to eat away at everything you believe in.

As for my "situation", I wasn't born into it. I created it, and I believe that anyone can.

Also, even if you have a smaller network than my own, you can still have success with this method. Smaller success perhaps, but I believe that most people could make the $30 to $45 per month they would need to bootstrap their business with a domain, hosting, and Aweber.

            ***

This thread has become a great resource of people giving away methods of making money on the Internet with little or even no money to start with...

Some of these methods that I have read don't look like they take much knowledge or experience. If you haven't had the success that you want yet, pay attention and don't skim over this information allowing it to become "pearls before swine" so to speak. Find a method that you like, and work it...

(And remember that sometimes it isn't the method that isn't working, it's you that isn't working!)

The only caveat that I would add is that nothing is really "free"... the methods that cost no money also require a lot more time and effort... and patience, because while the "free" methods work, they take longer.

Good advice. If you have very little money to start, your best bet would be starting with offering services like writing articles, backlinks, design work or whatever you are capable of. Once you make some money (in fact you can make a lot of money by offering services) invest a piece of it into your online business and grow it from there.

While offering services, if I had $10 and if I was just starting, I would probably do the same as Matt Cutts suggested. To buy a domain name and as much as hosting possible. Then work hard adding quality content to the site and marketing it. Having a million dollar idea is something rare, therefore it is best to follow the proven ways like creating a niche based site and adding AdSense or affiliate links on it. In fact I would go for a large niche so that I can reach even more people in the world.

So true! You could get started right away with $0.

free blog at Blogger or Squidoo lens + offer a service like graphics or writing + post helpfully on forums and advertise your services = earn money.

      earned money - hosting - $8 domain name (use a coupon) - $1 aweber trial = a growing list

then advertise your product or service to that list, put more effort into improving and expanding your new business help them out, earn their trust, and they will buy from you.

      rinse and repeat

      This ^ Pretty much!

      Did the same thing here.

Although if I had to spend the $10 and make money I would go for the domain and hosting although there is no reason why you cannot use free sites to get started - I did.

My favorite for writing was Textbroker because they always had so many jobs available. There was always something to write. As a level 3 doing level 3 jobs you make one cent per word which isn't great, but the amount of work makes up for it. A level 4 makes more. I still use Textbroker from time to time but only if I have no current clients and haven't made enough sales to meet my daily goal.

I highly recommend you make a Warriors for Hire thread as soon as possible. I have bumped mine five times and have always made at least three times the cost, and that is at the very least! Several times I have made $200-400 from one bump. Not to mention, linking to a WF thread in your signature tends to give a better response rate than linking to a website.

As for other freelance sites, I preferred oDesk.

You could also look at Constant Content. You can post an article there in a popular niche for someone to buy and you can set the price. It isn't instant but I have had all but two of my articles sell there. Just pick a popular niche. I still try to keep 2-3 articles up there at all times.

I don't think that you can effectively start an online business for just ten dollars. What I would do to get more capital is paid forum posting and try to sell a few articles. Any capital made can be set aside to later buy a domain, develop a product and then sell it.

For me, one can start with nothing, if you are resourceful enough to find ways then that's it. You just have to be creative, and merely copying any ones technique is not an assurance of getting the same results. Hard work as well as having the right skills is the key to achieve your goal.

On just $10 alone this is what I would do:

    1) Purchase an appropriate domain name at 1&1, you can get one
for under 10 bucks and you can register it privately at no additional cost.
People may disagree and tell you to go elsewhere. I have had
minimal problems with them so I can only speak of my experience.

    2) Open an account at Weebly and create a site hosted there with
your domain name. I like their templates better than Blogger and
the free Wordpress blogs, plus it is brain-dead simple to use. Create
a page for services and prices, testimonials and a contact page.

    3) Offer free review articles through your forum signature in exchange
for a testimonial, and make sure you do a good job on them. Once
you collect enough testimonials place them on your site.

    4) Change your signature to something catchy offering your writing
service. Once you have a few paying clients under your belt create
your own "Warrior For Hire" ad - the cost is only $20, so your first
paying client or two should bring you enough cheese to get going.
Please don't just post what you think will work best - look at some
of the successful ads and post titles and craft yours accordingly.

    5) You should be able to get a few takers on your ad. Follow the rules
and bump accordingly. As you build up your client base, be sure to
keep in regular contact and let them know about any deals you have
going on. Also, let them know about other content services you are
offering (eBook creation, AR series, Press Releases, blog posting, etc.)

    6) Keep delivering quality stuff and deliver it on time.

In my opinion i would set up a free wordpress.org blog or blogger blog as it would save quite a bit of money and you can spend it on link building.

You can make loads of money from nothing. $10 is a treasure trove. From the information I posess I can make $10(if I have only$10) into a fortune again.

Most of the people fail because they don't take action. The persons who are making money are taking some serious action and know that they have to succeed at any cost. This type of attitude can only bring nothing but success, success and sucesss only.

It's very refreshing to hear this kind of wording. Sometimes even myself I hear things such as "oh the market is too saturated and cut-throat" and "don't do internet marketing it's a scam and you will lose everything" I think those voices creep into our brain sometimes and veers us away from something that can change our lives.

If someone has $10 I don't understand for the life of me why people would recommend they spend that, and, assume they will recover within 30 dyas. Someone with no experience, heck even someone with experience, may not make money for 6-8 months. I think some of you assume this person already has the skillset and the learning curve to get it done. Most don't....In fact, their first campaign maybe a flop. Either you have time, or, money.

    • In my case I had $20 I found on the floor at the post office.

I used it to buy 80 New Age books at a garage sale, and sold them on Amazon. Used that money to buy more books. Shampoo, lather, rinse, repeat.

In a couple of months I was making more money than I could reasonably reinvest in garage sale books, so now it goes into PPC and buying Fiverr gigs.

I think that's what most IMer wannabes miss: It's a LOT easier to start a new endeavor when you have a successful business (online or off) that can feed it.

Sell your toys, offer babysitting services, walk dogs, do housesitting, get a booth at the flea market, pull espresso shots at Starbucks. Do whatever it takes to amass some capital -- more than $10.

I would buy 1 domain name, make sure I have something to write (give value to your audience), free hosting.

I would then write a report to give out (between 10 to 50 pages) and I would create an email list from that. Mail Chimp is free up to 1,000, so I wouldn't need money to spend right away.

I would focus mainly on adding value to the people who subscribe before even thinking about making money.

    I think matt is right.

There have been people start with nothing, but if you have a domain and hosting that willl start you out.

YOu can use a free auto responder, then make some money to buy a proper auto responder and pay for more hosting, then spend time driving Traffic, traffic, traffic to your squeeze page, building a list an get more good stuff to them....

then on wards and upwards, get affiliates to one product, sell the guts out of it, and keep making money till you can out source the traffic.

Then just think, more products, and more affiliates. If you do this correctly you could go from $10 to 1 Million in a few years. But its all about how much action you take.

but most of the time its not going to work out with just $10 or pounds for that matter.

if you do adsense then where does your traffic come from?

paid ads you need to pay as the name states.
free traffic would only be SEO and that takes time, not to mention you need to know how to do.
by then end of the month lets say you get 1st ranking but your hosting is over, you finally get the traffic but your property is taken away because you have nothing to pay for your rent which is your hosting.

then you are back to square 1.

so you really need more than $10 if not you are not getting anywhere, i would rather go to starbucks and get a drink. !

Sometimes established Warriors will pay for new Warriors to enter the War Room.

This usually happens a couple dozen times at the end of each year, because someone will start a thread saying "I'm giving back by sponsoring one person into the War Room, just tell me why it should be you" and then a bunch more people will say "hey, me too" and then even more people will say "hey, here's a bonus for all the winners" and by the time the new year rolls around there's this massive JV giveaway bundle of forty free products and ten free memberships and a half-dozen software licences... so every newbie with half a brain in their head is falling all over the place trying to win one.

Of course, I'm sure some of us only encourage this sort of thing because it's so much fun watching the newbies jump for the brass ring, but surely I would never do such a thing. It's not at all like dangling string in front of a kitten.

Bah! Go over to FreeBlogFactory, get yourself a genesis themed blog (it comes in their pkg), you get the blog for free and the hosting is free for a month. Look for some coupon deals to buy a domain (pretty easy to find them in google) and you'll save a buck or two.

Sign up for an awebber $1 trial acct, then get on over to twitter, set up an account the same as your domain name, follow people in your niche, so you'll pick up some free traffic and then repeat on FB, linkedin and youtube. For youtube, you can grab a free animoto acct and make some 30 second clips to put up there.

Pimp your wares on Fiverr and other clone sites, make a bit of cash and ensure you've got enough cash to cover the hosting for a few months.

Just call it an Autoresponder of your choice... All have advantages and disadvantages so try to choose on that is good for you, and even Aweber has apparently not been good for some people.

But the point is that you want an autoresponder that you can trust to send your emails to the Inbox (not the Spam box) of the people on your list. A good autoresponder automates all of this and keeps track of your list for you.

I had 15 $ left in my paypal account, and i decided to "invest" it in a domain and hosting, i searched a few forums for discounted hosting and i managed to turn that 15$ into a nice domainname and a years worth hosting, ( 5 gb space and 10 Gb bandwidth). i got that covered now and don't have to worry for a year.
Meanwhile i offer some services on fiverr that don't require much work , i get a few orders and have some money left now just in case i need something
I'm building from here on and I decided to focus on this one project to make it succeed.

i think if you put your mind to it , you can easely start from almost scratch and make good money after a while.

I think the reason why Matt Cutts considered buying a domain and web hosting for a $10 cash is because he knows how to grow the money with it. I mean he's already an expert for that. What I would do is similar to others, set up a blog that would focus on the subject/s I love. If I was a beginner to all of this, I'd spend some time here doing a bit of research. I'd learn about niche selection, keyword research, promotion and backlinking.

With the $10 I'd get a domain and hosting. At this point it is time to start taking action. Start grinding day in and day out until you start seeing results.

Honestly folks, it's really not that complicated, as some of you may think it is and you are all really lucky that you CAN start a business for $10 or less and you can get boat loads of traffic for free, if you really put the work into it. Just be thankful you don't have dish out $140 or $100 for a domain, let alone hosting on top of that.

There are TONS of ways to get cash, using Fiverr.com IMGigz.com , Rap Bank (pays instantly, tho think they hold your first payment or something), Marlon Sanders affiliate program pays instantly - he's got great products and shop around for other instant pay affiliate programs. Trade off services for work you need done, everybody has a skill.

You've got twitter traffic - which is not hard to get, youtube, facebook, etc. leverage that stuff to your advantage.

We never had paypal back in the day, we had to wait weeks on end for affiliate commissions and then when we got our cheques (if we got them), we had to wait for them to clear, because a lot of banks really gave people the gears about clickbank cheques. I had to wait 30 business days to clear a cheque - so it was a long time before I could reap the rewards of my earnings.

ok now I feel like my grandpa or something .. telling the story about walking to school with one boot, uphill in 10 feet of snow lol My point is, none of this is impossible and even if you had more money to start a business, it still takes work, but it's only as complicated as you make it be.

There is one really awesome thing about the internet.

When we tell these "you kids have it so lucky" stories about all the crap they can do now...

WE CAN DO THE SAME STUFF!

It's not like a "real" job where you walk into a company full of twenty-something kids and they smirk and snicker and call you "grandpa" because you don't have the same kind of phone they do.

"Haha, he called my mobile device a 'phone,' he's old and stuff."

We used to say "on the internet nobody knows you're a dog." Today, it's more like "on the internet nobody knows you're over forty."

Been there, done that, waste of time. Don't think I even made $10 from that Find something that is working NOW, is popular (more traffic and interest) and then setup shop there. This realization took me from $9/mn to $900 pretty darn fast.

This has tweaked my interest so I decided to try it tonight. The only thing out of all that is mentioned in these steps that I have are

      1) Verified paypal account
      2) Skype

Now, after a couple of hours I have added

      1) An icontact account
      2) A DigiResults account
      3) Registered for 4 forums in the niche I am targetting
      4) Used Google Docs instead of OpenOffice (hope there's no penalty for this )
      5) 10 pages into the document I am writing which I will finish later because I got games to play

There are a couple of technical points that I am going to have to concentrate on like setting up icontact, integrating that into digiresults and setting up the affiliate stuff there too but I will get that. If I don't I'll wipe up my tears and come back looking for help.

I will probably get in touch with Mr Darklock to get a recommended price for my product but other than that I am enjoying this experiment

iContact can be daunting, because it doesn't work like the other autoresponders. You have to deliberately connect more of the components instead of having a predefined workflow. That said, DigiResults and iContact just plain go together because Andy uses iContact himself.

That's my products first draft created. I will probably add some images and tidy up some of the text then I will be on the hunt for pricing.

Once that's done I will tie everything together and hopefully within the next few days I'll be promoting a new product

Despite of your 'nasty' pic, I must admit that I love reading your post.

It is true that to make money one only need: traffic + offer + conversion

Short report for product, affiliates as traffic generator, and site with buy button lead to digiresult for conversion.

It amaze me how people over complicate this process by SEO, link building, article marketing, etc...

I'm not saying that those thing aren't work, but... it's up to google to dump our site and don't give us any traffic. So why care with it in the first place? In my opinion, the only way to get reliable and targeted traffic from google is from adwords. Period.

Oh come on. If someone is starting with $10 they wouldn't have the experience to do this. Let's get realistic.

I love when people make these type of posts to try to show their knowledge. I'll bet any amount of money that the person that gave this reply never did this... EVER.

I beg to differ - or rather I think you are missing the point.

When I first started out I did not know how to do any of these things ^

Although I always found that someone was able to help me here and I thank the WF for all the help they have given me over the years.

Now I know a little more...

You are right they may NOT have the experience but EVERYTHING in the above list can be learnt.

Another interesting point is when you START something guess what?

        You have NO experience!

        Experience is accumulated by DOING.

Also back to the thread title: How would you start an online business with $10?

        It is a question right?

So therefore it is ASKING for people to impart their knowledge.

I don't blame you for thinking - it's not that easy - because it's not.

However the steps ARE there to make an online business - they truly are!

Your execution of the steps is the difference on whether or not it will work for you.

For instance in my EXPERIENCE no-one will give you the EXACT steps to make an online business.

Step 3: Write short report in OpenOffice - now depending on what that report is about, how well it is written, how hungry the niche is etc... it may make you $100000 or $0 - it is ALL down to trial and error.

Most people try a few times and then get a bit cynical...

If it doesn't work for you then it doesn't work right?

        Just my 2 pence.

        Chris Jones

P.S If people did not share their knowledge you would just get threads like mine & yours that don't really serve any REAL purpose.

You're right. I did it more like this:

        1. Write short report in Microsoft Office ($150)
        2. Set up as a product at E-Junkie ($5/month)
        3. Integrate a GetResponse list ($20/month)
        4. Register for forums in my niche (free)
        5. Offer review copies of the report in my sig (free)
        6. Send review copies via GMail to get feedback (free)
        7. PROFIT + LIST = (SMALLER) WIN

So, you know, if we're talking about how to start your business on $200... maybe you can do what I did.

Perhaps you've noticed the part where I didn't get affiliates, which I totally should have.

And where I didn't use Skype, which I totally should have.

And both of those things would have made me more money.

Which is precisely why I said you should do them. Because if I'm honestly trying to help you, I want you to do better than I did. After all, I didn't know WTF I was doing, so I made mistakes and did the wrong crap and honestly wish I'd done things differently. Hindsight's 20/20, you know.

But hey, if you absolutely insist on repeating my mistakes - there they are, do what I did, make less money. It's your business.

PS Newbies like me - AWeber is a must. They are the best. the catch is they only take credit / debit cards or a mail in payment- no paypal. so if you are like me, with all your money in paypal and no bank account (long story lol) you aren't going to get the $1 free trial. But it is WORTH $49 for a 6 month service if you can scrape it up, print the order form, send in the payment and order form.

Might wanna send it certified. I hate sending money in the mail!

I'd spend the $10 on a domain and hosting then head over to Fiverr, spend a few minutes posting a few offers and spend a day or 2 recouping the $10+(always cover your bets just in case the unexpected happens). Then I would spend the rest of the month working on my new site.

Here's my starter toolbox: Google keyword tool, free blogging platform, free autoresponder, RSS feeders, etc. all free but... I assume you got that $10, so spare $1 for Aweber and build your list. Create a product, market it on Facebook... Research, create, market.

$10 is enough to get anyone going in the internet marketing world. Someone starting will be persevere enough to write his own content, install his own wordpress, promote his own website etc. $10 is not rally a small amount, it depends on how you look at it or how you plan to spend it.

If you are unemployed with $10 to your name, it will be very hard for you to start anything. A good VPS hosting already costs you at least $20 per month (I don't think shared hosting is a good idea for many reasons I will not list here). And a domain will set you back by another $10 more or less. So there's nothing much you can do here, thus don't get deluded. The best thing you can do is to stay with your parents and look for a job.

Now there's some positive thinking if you're not creative enough to come up with ways to make money online with $10, I'm sorry but you're in the WRONG business. CD has been around as long as I have and he's telling you it can be done, so have others and so have I. We're not pulling this stuff out our butts you know, we're telling you it, because we know it works. And there's nothing wrong with some shared hosting until you can afford to upgrade.

      Negative mindset, brings negative results.

Please do yourself a favor and get a copy of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. There are many free copies online and many warriors are giving it away in .PDF format. I would also suggest signing-up for the Thought of the Day from the Napoleon Hill Foundation.

I understand that you are trying to take a "realistic" view, but the statement that you have made here is absolutely wrong, and it has been proven time and time and time again here in the real world.

Everyone who is not currently enjoying the success and income that you wish to have, listen to this:

You absolutely CAN start a profitable business with little or no money, and Internet Marketing is among the easiest ways to do this.

That does not mean that it is "easy" only that it is easier than most all other methods.

If you are starting with little or no money, that just means you have to work harder and wait longer before you have the results you want. (Nothing is "free"... If it doesn't cost money, it costs time.)

You absolutely can do it. It only takes consistent, dedicated, focused work.

he mentions how he would buy a domain and webhosting, in my opinion that seems a bit of a waste... You will loss all your money right away and you basically have one month to succeed or fail...

In my opinion i would set up a free wordpress.org blog or blogger blog as it would save quite a bit of money and you can spend it on link building.

just wondering what you would do!?

And then when wordpress.com bans you're account you gotta start all over.

    $2 for .info domain
    $0 crappy free hosting
$5 in a 3000 backlink link pyramid on MultiTaskr
$2 on 32 red and hope I have enough to buy more MultiTaskr gigs?

build it for a month with bum marketing, and sell it for $200-$500. Then you can start the right way.

If you're more a service kinda guy, just start for free on a gig site. Let them do all the work, all you gotta do is make free gigs and rake in your money. Find free ebooks, sell them for $5, etc.

If you only have $10 to spare...please, don't put it in IM. I'm pretty sure anyone in their right mind can come up with $20 or maybe even $50 if they are serious, which will buy enough backlinks to do something. If you really only have $10 spend it on food for your next meal will be at a mission.

I started with $3,000. I blew $2,800 on crap "Guru's" were spitting down my throat untill I finally figured out they're all a bunch of scam artists. In the end I had $200 to actually start this business I am running now and with it I turned my humble beginnings into a massive empire. If I can do it anyone can.

Sure. iContact is a complete corporate email solution, combining the features of an autoresponder with a few other important things. I don't know if they still do, but NPR used to use them.

The advantage of iContact is that they have a service that you can use for no cost. You can learn more about them on their website: Email Marketing - iContact (Direct link, not affiliate)

However, I would strongly suggest that anyone in Internet Marketing use Aweber, which is much better for our purposes. It is easier to use the features you will want, and with only $1 in the first month and $19/month after that, it is very affordable.

They also have superb customer service.

Eventually, you will be able to have your own custom solution, or get InfusionSoft. But for now, Aweber is probably best for most people.

The other advantage is that they don't hate you and will let you manage your own contacts without sending confirmation emails every time you change your internal list management systems.

I hate AWeber. The only reason I still do business with them is that they have made it a rock-solid pain in the arse to get my contacts OUT of their system, too, so I can't really move to another provider unless I decide it's okay to flush my existing list down the toilet.

AWeber are teh suck. They are every bit as friendly, helpful, and fun to do business with as Richard Nixon's ball sack.

I'd take the ten bucks and cruise some yard sales and thrift stores looking for something I knew I could flip for three or four times the cost. Then I'd sell that sucker on eBay.

Finding stuff to sell isn't that hard. I'm into books and am very familiar with several hot book niches. I once paid $.50 for a book and sold it for $220. I got a hold of a hot marketing course by Jay Abraham for a buck and sold it for $300.

I'd sometime wake up to 30+ sales overnight. I'd get up at 5:30 AM and pack everything. I never once bought a box though. I'd go to Walmart and ask them for their small and medium sized boxes. Then I'd cut the seams, flip them insideout (to hide the original printing) and retape them. They looked like brand new and it only took about a minute to do. With nearly 5000 auctions in a year and a half I figured I saved (cash in pocket) more than $10,000 recycling boxes.

I didn't look at this as a pain at all. While I was doing it I loved it. Managing writing is a bit easier but has its challenges too. Right now I'm into product creation and loving it.

Okay, What If I have a 10$ and want to get a domain name + hosting ?

Can I get it for a year for 10$ ?

E.g. will it work if I Purchase a domain from some site like Go-daddy, names-cheap etc. and transfer it or host it on a free hosting site like byethost or word press ?

PS. Word press domain costs 17$ and I have 10$.

And I think those 10$ won't fetch you a ready website page or a sales page along with hosting and domain. Or Am I wrong here ? I think that's where wordpress hosted sites come handy.

what do you experts suggest and advice ? Ignore if you find these questions a little dumb . I am a total newbie to all this stuff.

Will be happy if somebody explains all this process of purchasing domain, hosting and setting up a website in a simple lucid manner.

    Thanks in advance and regards,
    Cantaxian.

      Personally,
If I were in your situation I would buy the domain from Namecheap (because I despise GoDaddy like CDarklock despises Aweber) and just direct it to my Blogger blog.

In fact, if I didn't have money for the domain, I would start with Blogger. And a lot of people will tell you different hosting. The point is to find one that you like, stick to it and make it good.

This is why I don't recommend a domain name and hosting to start with. If you're brand new at this...

      1. You don't know how to pick a good domain name.

      2. You don't know how to pick a good host.

      3. You can't afford to f!#k it up.

That's why I like the method I laid out. The worst that can happen is you don't make any money, but you can try again. Risk of failure is nil.

What do you want to sell? Any idea of what you want your site to be about? ie: if you want to sell ebooks for example, your domain should be relevant to that keyword. I always tell people that when they pick a domain name, it should have something in it relevant to what they're selling.

Later on, when you've gained some experience then you can get a little more technical about choosing domain names. Some people also use their own names in their domains ie: joeblowsebooks.com so this way they're branding their name, plus telling people what they're selling on that particular site.

I listed a resource for hosting plus a wp theme above (you get to try it free for a month - and thereafter it's really cheap). The guys that own that company are pretty respectable dudes, Russell Yermal and Bradley Will.

Its nice that you got all that for a year in 15$. I am trying to earn money in fiverr by selling ebooks. Will hopefully get on domain in the near future, till then trying to figure out the best options and my niche.

    @ Mike Tucker,

That was really helpful, that would perfectly fit in my budget right now. But isn't wordpress more convenient than blogger when it comes to plugins and SEO ? I will wait for some more time if that is a good option. Can we purchase a domain and transfer it to wordpress to get those wordpress plugins and templates? And what about byethost as its a free hosting.

    @ CDarklock,

I totally agree with you, I started with the blogger blog considering all this. But one has to think of getting ahead and upgrade to the next level. I am right now trying to figure out how to go to the next level.

    @ Laurie Rogers,

I haven't decided on a particular marketing strategy or niche, I do have an account with Click Bank and have recently submitted my first article to Ezine and article base for the purpose of marketing my products and getting traffic to my blog. I would like to sell anything that takes my interest. E-books can be a good source to attract traffic if given free or as a bonus alongside the main product.
Yes But I am trying to find a particular niche for setting up a website. Its hard time learning the tricks of trade but I am ready to learn and determined to work. Its just that I need some time to get familiar with all the IM Stuff.

Thank you all for your valuable inputs . Looking forward to have a great learning experience in this forum .

Wordpress is indeed better than blogger, yes there are more options and plugins etc. and if you read the forum, a lot of marketers like the genesis platform theme. Hence another reason why I suggested the resource of getting the theme and hosting for free above - they use that platform exclusively.

Why use a free host when someone will give you free hosting for a month? And if you're doing gigs on Fiverr (which I don't recommend you limiting yourself to just one site - there's tons of clone sites - list is here in the forum), you'd have enough money to pay for hosting after a month .. hostgator always has promo's on for hosting and there are a ton of others .. hostnine I think starts at $4/mo or something ... so one gig at Fiverr or wherever and you're hosting is paid for the month after free trial is done.

Yep, Wordpress is better than Blogger for Internet Marketers, but my understanding is that the free version doesn't like commercialization? Correct me if I'm wrong.

On the other hand if you can get hosting with CPanel, of course you can install Wordpress for no extra cost.

Maybe it's just me, because I'm technically challenged, but when I started blogging Wordpress was also more difficult to set-up and learn to use. Having more features also meant that it was more complicated. Blogger on the other hand is so simple that its hard to screw-up. Adding AdSense and Amazon ads were just a click of the button and entering the code.

Wordpress isn't that hard once you get the hang of it and the widgets for your plugins are drag and drop, I've never used a free version of it, so couldn't tell you about the commercialization of it. And there are tons of plugins for Adsense etc. There are also tons of tutorials out there on youtube etc. giving step by step instructions on almost every facet of it.
I know wordpress pretty good, but the guys at Get a Free Blog - Free WordPress Blog Setup | FreeBlogFactory.com taught me a heck of a lot of info and gave me a list if plugins to optimize my site etc. for little things you don't think about.

I started by offering my writing services right here on WF.

My 'For hire' advertisement was paid for selling my unwanted household stuff at a car boot sale.

Since that advertisement I have never spent a penny on IM that I didn't earn online.

My 'day job' salary has never been used to further my IM education or progress.

So, if someone were to give me £10, I'd probably use it to buy my lunch.

      1. Look for in-demand niches. Browse Ebay, Amazon, Flippa, Google Shopping to see which are in demand.
      2. Perform keyword research using Google Adwords Keyword Research Tool.
      3. Buy .com/.net/.org domain name from Godaddy = $7.49 (search for a coupon or check out my site)
      4. Sign up for Hostgator = $0.01 for the first month (Use coupon code WPHOSTINGDEALS)
      5. Install WordPress. Install plugins and theme.
      6. Write your site's articles yourself.
      7. Build backlinks using social bookmarking, blog commenting, forum posting, guest blogging, etc.
      8. Sign up for Aweber account = $1 for the first month
      9. Place Adsense and affiliate offers on your site.
      10. Once you have enough traffic, other website owners will offer to pay you to write about their site/product on your blog.
      11. If you're still not making money after the first month, post a Fiverr gig and offer a writing service or any skill you are good at. You can also look for gigs at Odesk or Elance. Use the money to pay for hosting and other recurring fees.
      12. Repeat #6 and #7.

The OP asked about hosting/domain costs somewhere there....a .info is $2.95 I think at namecheap (I hate godaddy just as much as another poster). Hostgator (only host I would go with now) has $7.96/mn plans with unlimited domains. It has the ability to load a WP blog in minutes. As you make more money, you can add more and more domains (on same account) and more blogs. Pretty easy actually. OK its $11 but go dig up some change from the couch for the buck.

Thanks a lot friends for your feedbacks. I tried to register a domain with blogspot but It asks for credit card details which I don't have. Other domain registration site requires "Paypal" and I based in India cannot send payments through paypal without a credit card. Seems Like I will have to find some other way out. I use Alertpay but it seems none of the site accepts it for domain registration purpose.

    @ Laurie,
Thanks for suggesting IMgigz. I registered there as it has an option of selling e-books and I have a few with Resale rights . Fiverr does not allow listing of e-books it seems.

BTW I need to know something about transferring e-book to the buyer after receiving payment. How do people land on the download page directly after making payment ? What methods do they use ?

On IMgigz I have mentioned that the e-books will be delivered through the e-mail once I get the payment. Is it okay this way ?

While I agree that it would be a sad little number of successes, the reason is not because they can't... It's because they won't do the work.

Well if they don't do it or wouldn't do it, that just means they're simply not hungry enough for change. I did it with $100 bucks, but that was way back when - I did it because I wanted and knew I deserved better in my life and I was hungry enough for change. The other realities are, they can't step out of their comfort zones and are willing to settle because that's what they think society has put in their heads (go to school, get a job, wife and kids) and well ... some people are just plain too damn lazy and the last, some just aren't cut out for owning their own business.

The other realities are, they can't step out of their comfort zones and are willing to settle because that's what they think society has put in their heads (go to school, get a job, wife and kids) and well ... some people are just plain too damn lazy and the last, some just aren't cut out for owning their own business.
Laurie you're a writer, you like to write. This business was a natural fit for you to succeed. You started with a $100 bucks, and, gotten it back. I am not surprised. There are plenty of guys who are now succeeding that lost lots of money learning this stuff. I believe CDs plan was sufficient enough. If not, tell me why?

I have the feeling with, so, many overlooking what he wrote, and, insisting on domain, and, hosting that they don't agree with his plan for a newb.

CDarklord's outline is pretty much as simple as it gets...

Some here don't agree that a newbie would be able to do this... Sure, not if they read that plan on the very first day they started looking into IM/MMO.

The problem lies in the sheer fact that MOST people aren't hungry enough to do whatever it takes. If a total newbie REALLY wants it, guess what? All he/she would have to do is spend the first week (or month) learning how to do all of the steps that CD laid out.

This is going to be a bold statement but I believe NOBODY came into IM/MMO knowing all of those steps. Some might have programming experience, but lack the ability to write content. Some might have the ability to write well, but lack the ability to integrate Paypal with DigiResults... You get the idea.

January 2010 - I didn't know ANYTHING about IM. I just got really curious all of a sudden as to how people made money on the internet. This caused me to research and get as much free content as I could about the subject. I came across a free 12-part video series explaining and "teaching" affiliate marketing. That led to another thing, and that thing to yet another.

Little by little I was expanding my knowledge into IM/MMO.

I'm still constantly learning. I've failed countless times. I've have also had small successes here and there. Nothing to retire on, but I can tell you success, however small, is an addictive feeling.

It all comes down to HOW BADLY do you really want to change your life? Most just want instant riches. Push a button and wake up with $394.37 on your account overnight. They don't want to work day in and day out at this. What is the point of trying to make money on the internet if you're not going to have all day to do whatever you want while getting filthy rich at the same time, right?

Like it was mentioned above by someone else, since we're kids we're taught to go to school and graduate, get a job, wife and kids and that's life...

For some, this is NOT enough. This will NOT do. I've been working since I'm 16 years old. I'm now 26. I know that I want to one day be my own damn boss. Not have to answer to anybody but myself. This is not simply a "want" it's something I NEED to happen. It feels like my life is not going to be what it should be as long as I keep working for somebody else.

That is the reason I got into this and the reason that keeps driving me to not give up.

I wish I had seen CDarklord's post when I got started. So what if I have to learn and ask a few things to get it going? It's solid advice that WILL work as long as you put in the effort. Will it work on your first try? Depends on a LOT of factors, but like he said, you can try again for free and all you've spent is time.

Yes, I know time is money. Remember the title of the thread, though.

    @michaelburke,
You would have to give us the domain name for anyone to look at it.

    @Zaney,
Did you read the previous 131 posts, which are full of excellent ideas on how to do just that? What makes it "hard to believe" for you?

OK, took a look at it. My advice is to get your website up and spend all of your effort promoting it.

to have any real chance of success, the easiest way to succeed is probably around $200.

    EMD + content + links

But you've got to know SEO up front, you can't buy that for any price.

That's specifically what cutts is talking about ... $10 worth of seo investment. While it's possible, the odds for success when you only have $10 is very, very slim.

If you've got the $10, to get your startup capital to where it needs to be, seo is the wrong way to go about doing it. I'd sign up for plenty of fish and start flirting ... having your "dating profile link" in the form of an affiliate link to a dating service ready to pass via PM at any time.

Yeah, it'll make you feel a bit creepy but the real answer is "get a job and raise enough money to start out the right way" ... but I know none of you want to hear that.

I agree that SEO is not as reliable as some other methods. But it can be done, and even Newbies can do it. Really, in a month you could do around 120 hours of work, even if you have a "job"... but people have to do the work.

In my humble opinion, the whole point of IM is to do work that will continue to work for you, not things that are temporary... That's just another job.

So I've never tried the dating promotion thing, but I'm not sure how that works long term? Seems kinda like each time you "flirt" with someone you are basically still working again.

I think that most people know that the best way to make their business profitable is to get a job and invest more money in it... For those that don't, well here is your sign. But the point here is that many people are unable to do that, so there are certainly other options.

I would also start with a domain and hosting and then build content from there of which you can find plenty of on the web.

You can start with $0. I did. I decided I was putting no money into this until I started seeing some solid ROI - that is to remove any financial pressure where you're driven to succeed because you have X dollars invested up front (and which you're going to second guess whether or not that was spent wisely should it takes longer than you initially thought it would to make it back). I prefer being driven for the intrinsic reward that comes with successes (big and small) and operating in niches I enjoy in their own right (though each was researched to ensure a shot at profitability through enough searches and reasonably low competition, as its still a commercial undertaking).

I bought my hosting and 2 domains from outsourcing to other Warriors within my first couple weeks here while I'd launched a free trial baloon on Blogger before joining. I pulled the content from Blogger on July 4 (Independence Day was an apt day to do it, even though I don't live in the US - I still appreciate what it symbolizes) and registered the first domain out of that and paid for my host service the same day.

FTR I didn't get into IM to become a millionaire. I aim to attain the maximum success possible simply because that's how I've approached every prior venture; and the financial gain is only one yardstick (not a trivial one). I have milestones in mind, but they're flexible to account for the unpredictable things life throws up. For me, I succeed as I continue improving upon what I'm doing and learning more about the process as I go. The money quotient will inevitably follow and increase over time.

Good question, I would get a Facebook fan page. Spend five dollars on fiver to get at least 25 fans so can get a fan page URL. Once I did that I'd build up a following on my fan page and once that fan page started generating money. I would then buy a domain name, hosting, and an email service and tell all my fas to sign up for my emails.

Buy $10 worth of business cards. Build my new company a Facebook fanpage and Google Places page... then go email, call and visit local companies to sell Facebook and Google Places set-up and maintenance/content update services until I make enough to expand to other services (and you should have enough to expand in less than a week).

Well, you can start an online business with nothing. Start by providing some quality articles to your clients and from there try to save that money before you would invest or use some money in purchasing domains or so on.
Conceptualize a plan first before you try to spend some money doing some Internet Marketing business. Make a plan and try to focus on that plan, hence; when you are already familiar with the basics, then you can't spend that $10 to purchase something that will help you in your business.

yup so bottom line is take this $10 put it in the bank or spent it on starbucks.

dont bother trying to hope for that $10 to grow into millions or thousands or even hundred no matter what u do with it unless u gamble it and u win 10 times in a row then u will get $10,000.

if u really think that will happen then u must be dreaming. lol. but anyway if u want u can try roulette. lol.

I started without even investing 10 bucks.

I joined an adult type dating affiliate program (the 1 that is older than time itself) for free, then with my affiliate link, I started finding interested prospects using free online classified sites, like craigslist, MundoAnuncio (dot) com, olx (dot) com, and others. I had them write to an email address, to capture their address, then promoted my affiliate link to them to join.

I think I made about $40 my first month doing that, then grew from there.

Now I do things completely differently, (SEO, paid banner ads, etc.) since placing free classified ads all day is not the most efficient use of time. But if you are short on money when first starting out, then place free classifieds all day long.... you will make some bread.

I offer 100% free ecommerce training. You can then start an ecommerce store for .01 for the first month. If you can get a couple sales before the end of month 1 you can use the profit from those sales to cover the 2nd month's operating expenses and continue growing from there. IMHO there are very few legitimate opportunities that you can get into for that low of an amount of risk!!
