Is Dragon Naturally Speaking A Fast Typing Alternative?

Hello Article Writers, Bloggers, E-Book Writers and Ghostwriters:

Do you use Dragon Naturally Speaking?

Is it a sensible alternative?

I tried it about 5 years ago and it was so clunky it was impossible.

Do any of you use it?

Does it matter whether it is Windows or Mac for this?

I wish there was some reliable voice recognition software out there. It would help making articles easier. I write differently than I talk so I could end up getting a few extra articles from that.

It's fantastic. I can speak as fast as I want and it keeps up. They made incredible strides in the last two releases, simply outstanding. Almost forgot, get one of those Plantronics usb headset/mic combos and you'll be very impressed.

ive not got it, but on all the related blurb it does advise that you need to give the software a bit of time to 'learn' your voice, so ditching it after a minimum of tries is interesting

I love it! It does take some time for it to be trained to your voice, but it saves so much time.

Even if I have to go back and edit, it is worth it!

I have the Preferred Version 8 and now they're on Version 10 I think. I also just upgraded my computer to a super fast one. In your experience, is the difference between versions 8 and 10 worth paying the upgrade fee for?

      Thanks,

Yes, I do. I guess I should mention that I have a wicked fast computer and the software keeps up with me no matter how fast I talk. I don't know how it works on older computers. I have to try it on my laptop, Pentium M 1.6GHz single core, see how it runs. Also, those who are getting bad recognition, heed my words: get the Plantronics 650 or equivalent usb headset/mic and you'll see how good this combo really is. Steven, you stole the words right out of my mouth! I also posted somewhere that I turn the software off frequently because I need time to think and compose my thoughts!

and a fast processor. Gosh I use it profusely and have had it for several years. I must say it is much more efficient when I shut down needless processes and programs that are running in the background. It runs way better on dual core processors so if you're on an older computer I wouldn't bother with it.

The older versions weren't nearly as good as the latest two versions. I really enjoy using it and the more you use it the better it is. I would agree with the post above that if you don't have a newer computer don't get it. You do need the faster processors and memory for it to work correctly.

I wouldn't be without it. The small amount of time that's required to train it is repaid many, many times over in time saving later on.

It's not perfect and I used to spend more time correcting mistakes than talking. But if you type below 60 words a minute...It's real useful.

I have DNS 9. It makes about 2 mistakes per paragraph. Considering that I
can speak 5 times as fast as I can type, it's worth making the 8 to 10
      corrections per article.

Having said that, I don't use it all the time because I enjoy typing as it
      slows down your thought process.

That's another thing about using speech recognition software.

You really DO speak differently than you write. So your articles are going
      to actually sound different.

I honestly don't like how my spoken articles sound, which is why I prefer to
      type.

Well, the proof is in the pudding. If it is good enough for Steven(I had to correct the spelling of your name), it is good enough for any of us.

        Steven,

I fully agree with you here, I love DNS but it does "change" your writing slightly. It was hard for me to explain to others but you said it very well.

    Hey Charles,

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is probably the best investment I made for my business to date.

I cannot imagine doing business without it anymore.

I am a horribly slow typist, so it makes perfect sense for me to use this software.

I just dictated this post in just a few seconds.

Actually, it has gotten to the point where I refuse to type without it. My time is better spent doing other tasks than typing.

So, if I'm in a place where I cannot use Dragon NaturallySpeaking I will just put off the typing I need to do.

That may sound stupid, but I'm such a horrible typist that it would take me 10 times the amount of time to write a document than it would if I was using Dragon NaturallySpeaking

So, I just do other tasks when I am not able to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Anyway, I could go on and on.

    Regards,

    Shannon Herod

The only downside, is you start speaking in punctuation after a while.

It was funny, I was doing a video for a product and I was speaking the punctuation marks in my sentences. I did this for about two minutes before I finally realized that I was not typing and doing a video.

It was so funny. I actually left it in the video and explained what was happening.

It gave me a great laugh :-)

    Hey Charles,

I highly recommend it. I'm a relatively fast (over 100 wpm) typist and using Dragon 10 is much faster than typing by hand.

Any time you spend "training" the software is time well spent.

    All The Best,

I have version 9 and I love it. Without it I type about 40 WPM but with the software I can triple my writing speed.

Is it perfect? No. But I make plenty of mistakes when typing without it too. It's always a good idea to proof read an article before you use it for anything anyway.

I also think it's fun to use which makes the task of "writing" a lot more enjoyable and less like work.

DNS is something that I have never even thought of even though I heard about it a long time back. Maybe that's an investment I should make this year.

I don't know how much version 10 is but I got version 9 about 6 months ago and it was on sale for just $50. I think it's worth every penny.

    So this does work?

    WOW!

Can anyone give me how much of a cost is involved in it?

Also, does it bold things for you and things like that or do you have to do that type thing for you.

For punctuation, you have to say "period" or "question mark"?

Something like this could really come in handy.

I use DNS 9 as well for a lot of things, especially writing for writing my articles, ebooks and guides. It does save me a lot of time but I do write down some bullet points and notes to keep me straight so I can speak and keep structured.

Steven is correct, it is very easy to change the way your articles sound so if you need to go back and tweak your writing to "Formalize" it you should still speed up your writing.

    Regards

I use DNS Preferred Version 10.0 & I got it about 3 months ago for about $100 & it came with a microphone. It works great for me. I didn't have to spend too much time training it to recognize my voice. I'm like Steven & don't use it all the time, but love it when I do.

Also, does it bold things for you and things like that or do you have to do that type thing for you.

Yes, that's exactly right - it does everything for you, but you get used to it after awhile. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I type damn slow compared to many. But I still can type stuff out way faster than I can trying to correct and use DNS.

Of course I know I prolly haven't used it enough to let it "learn" me yet. But every time I start with it I end up tossing the damn headset and typing myself.

I feel like I am trying to coach something that doesn't wanna listen. And I get frustrated.

For getting copy to sound like how you talk. Just use a little digital recorder to speak out a rough copy. Then type it in and edit from there. I speak kinda fast when coming up with stuff. And this helps a ton. Because I can catch all the usual quirks I use when talking. And then have the option to include them in the actual copy if it adds to the casual spoken feel that I am looking for.
