What To Do When Someone is SPAMMING THIS FORUM

by Jill Carpenter 124 replies
Hi guys,

Just hit the report button please, and don't bother to comment on the thread.

Paul Myers revealed to me that if you comment right under the spammer you risk your name being too close to the spammer and a technical error can occur such as your account getting wiped out by accident. Rare occurrence, but apparently has happened in the past.

Look for the little red triangle and hit it.

If it is hit enough times, the post will go poof.

**** it Jill. I have reported more than 8 of them this morning. The threads get deleted, but dude is not banned and keeps on keeping on.

I think the ban button is broken this morning.

But hey, not my problem is it?

Here is another word of warning too - if you are even thinking about checking those links or downloading you may want to think again.

You might get something very evil on your computer if you do.

I understand but commenting on their thread will not make them go away any faster. All it does is brings the threads back to the top of the forum so these idiots get even more exposure before they are banned.

If we all just ignore them and report the post they will be gone soon enough.

        Hey! Guess what!!

I have been banned for spamming when I commented on a spammers thread and when I got in touch with support they said I was mistakenly banned.

        Pretty cool huh?

Spammers will always be here, and I just can't help myself. :p

That's because the mods are too busy deleting your threads and posts -- the spammers will have to wait.

I'd add to what Jill said.

If a spammer adds something to an existing thread don't quote them. Otherwise when the spammer + their post disappear, their post (sometimes including the spam link) is left behind in the quote.

Thanks, Jill, I never even noticed that button. I also see there's an "add infraction" button. I think I'll ignore that one for now, but it's good to be able to report blatant spam posts.

Edit: it's probably a good thing that these buttons are not too easy to find. Otherwise, that could be another form of spamming, which is a problem on sites like YouTube, where people like to "report" videos they don't like, or just for the hell of it.

Not that this is important to this thread, I just want to get but it off my chest a similar experience. I was simurly attacked on ezine becuse a person with a simular product falsely reported on his computition to get their articles banned or whatever. Frustrating to say the least.

Hope that sort of thing isn't happening here, although it appears that the potential for that sort of abuse exists.

That's not a technical glitch. It's human error. I fat-moused an account that way last week.

It's very uncommon, but that doesn't make it any less annoying and inconvenient for the person who gets zapped. I think, between the bunch of us, it's happened 4 times in the past 3 years. Twice to the same person, bless her forgiving soul.

Lots of good advice in this thread, but there's one thing that was left out:

    Don't Panic

There will occasionally be times when there's no moderator watching things. Just report the stuff and remain calm. The fact that things don't disappear immediately might be for that simple reason.

Putting insulting comments about the moderation team in the reports isn't going to make things happen any faster.

LOL! But when you see a troll posting thread after thread with download links for WSOs or something equally despicable, all the while rubbing his warty little hands together and jumping up and down in glee, it's hard to stay calm and wait for him to be banned.

Holy cow. You have delusions of sanity? Send me some of those things wouldjya?

I guess I won't be making the reply to spam posts anymore either. Nuts - I enjoyed that and always figured those replies served as a notice to any of the other potential spammers that they won't go far doing that.

Silence isn't my usual mode. I'm sure that I could find more worthy ways to achieve banning than flaming spammers though. Off to find a new hobby.

Probably not directly, as I get the impression that the mods have pretty thick skin. But someone who would insult the mods on any kind of regular basis is probably insulting other members as well, and is more likely to be causing other problems in the forum.

And anytime it comes down to a borderline situation, or when it's something subjective and a mod can exercise their discretion, they're certainly going to be less charitable to people who have a habit of making the mods' (unpaid) jobs more unpleasant and difficult.

Thanks for the reminder, Jill. I've used that little red triangle quite a few times - for spammers and also for new members who post a bunch of similar one-liners in the space of a few minutes just to get their post count up .

The mods are great about quickly getting rid of them once they've been reported. I do understand the temptation to respond to them as they are so irritating, but reporting them is easy and far more effective.

Lol. And. Another reason for not commenting on spammers, and especially not quoting them, is that if the spammer is leaving a comment in a legitimate thread their post may live on in your quote even if the spammer and his/her post is banned.

The mindless bot that's running riot right now will go along with all other posts, quoted or not

Really? When I did that two years ago, I got banned for a week.

Primarily because we have an ongoing and persistent problem with people starting threads about "why doesn't someone make THIS product?" when they have already made it. Then, when people act interested and he can see the market potential, HEY PRESTO there's a WSO.

That's advertising, not discussion, and it's against the rules. Trouble is, sometimes it's hard to tell whether someone's advertising or honestly thinking about creating a new product - and mistakes get made. Oh well. Suck it up and live with it.

Unless, of course, you were actually advertising and deserved to get your thread deleted. In which case it serves you right. :p

I didn't say spamming this forum.

And for the record Paul, if you look up a few posts, you'll see someone is ALREADY promoting a wso that spams forums, on a WF banner ad, no less.

Just making light of the situation, which is already occurring.

I had my thread deleted today because I was thinking of making a WSO out of it.

Guess I won't now since apparently the WF doesn't want me to make WSO's out of my threads.
A thread about a method or strategy will run just fine - until you mention it's going to be/may be/ could be your WSO. That makes it promotional.

A thread is where you share information - a WSO is where you sell it.

    Eric,
And for the record Paul, if you look up a few posts, you'll see someone is ALREADY promoting a wso that spams forums, on a WF banner ad, no less.
Link, please. It will go away.

There was an incident this morning with what appeared to look like an automated bot. So I devilishly spammed my own post to bring it back up. It was easier and quicker to give a bump than to start something new.

Note that you can also use that triangle to report abusive threads, too, like with blatant cursing, porn and other content that some posts have that's not for general audiences. Just a heads up on that. In fact, you use it to report:

spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts.

(That info above actually pops up when you click it, FYI, then you fill in the blank with any notes).

I wish there was some kind of magic triangle like this that can be used offline.

For instance, I'm in the library right now and there's some noisy kids nearby. If only I could somehow triangle those kids to make them disappear or whatever happens when a person gets triangled. That would be excellent.

I haven't done it, click on the triangle, because I am not too much in this forum, and there are a lot of great people in the forum, but the thing to do is ignore the person and let the moderators take care of the obvious spam post whereby they have nothing to contribute to the forum. Contribution is key and if nothing is contributed then they are a taker, err, spammer, and not a giver to the forum to teach and let others learn and grow.

Just a reminder for everyone to check your 'blog' and or 'visitor' page if you have one activated. Since these areas of the forum are often neglected for months at a time - it's not uncommon for a spammer to have their links sitting pretty in your own little section of the WF.

What good would that do? That person who's been doing the "Alexa Smith" postings will get banned and then create a whole new account and repeat the process.

It's just a question of ignoring them. It's not foolproof, but it's a strategy.

It would do a LOT of good. All of those spam posts were around for quite a while earlier today and were appearing on just about all of the top 20 posts on the Main IM Forum. If I could click a button next to the spammers name, I could make all posts by that person invisible, then I wouldn't have to read the same old crap posted by the same person on 20+ threads.

To me that seems like a GOOD idea, and I'm just asking if it's a feature which may already exist, and I just haven't seen it.

I understand what you mean now -- sure, that would be one way to stop seeing that one person's particular postings.

And of course if the same stuff started showing up under a new ID, it would help. That makes much more sense now.

I believe however there's an "ignore" list somewhere. Where I don't remember.

In the specific case that you've mention, it did, indeed, take a long time for a mod to get to that. Maybe cause it's a weekend/holiday?

LOL, the irony of it: I've "gone viral", apparently, and I'm not even selling/promoting anything here.

The thing to do is report those posts, and the moderators will remove them.

Originally Posted by rooze View Post

Yes - you can put people on an "ignore" list (which is what I did myself, a long time ago, under his real name, with the indivudual who's now making all the posts about me - and that meant as a bonus I didn't see his private messages, which said the same things, as well his posts. Not so easy when he keeps changing his damn name all the time, admittedly ... but at least that way we get the rather weird irony that it's someone remaining anonymous who's questioning the identity of someone who made the (entirely unnecessary) mistake of using her real name here! ).

Click on "User CP" (top left) and then "edit options", and scroll down the left-hand side a little - under "settings and options" you'll see "edit ignore list".

Nothing is worth replying to. I reiterate this forum is about internet marketing and everything that goes along with it.

Personally, I don't care who people SAY they are or who they REALLY are. What concerns me is the value of the information that they're offering. Sure, there are a lot of people here who aren't who they say they are, but who cares?

It's about the money and earning an honest living. If you're really a guy posing as a woman on this forum I don't care -- neither should anybody else.

Not really, but that was more or less how he saw it, anyway.

This is a person in some very stressful and unpleasant circumstances, whose thought-processes (as so many have noticed) sometimes aren't altogether rational, for a variety of unfortunate reasons, some of which are actually not his own fault, to be fair.

I bear him no ill-will at all. I tried to help him and was ultimately unable to, and eventually had to draw a line.

There was a lot I didn't originally know about him, and when I first started talking with him I was only 18/19, myself, and I might handle such a situation altogether differently now.

I've never been or felt judgmental about him, or about his circumstances - not to his face and not behind his back. I hope his circumstances improve, though I suspect at the moment the opposite may be the case. I encourage the many others here who know who he is and a little about "the story" not to think ill of him, in spite of his behavior here. I wish him no harm at all, albeit that (like so many others here) I do wish he'd stop posting!

But saying this doesn't help (which is partly why I haven't said more about this in the past), when someone isn't altogether responsible for his actions.

I haven't spoken with him or replied to him for a very long time, now, but he has - intermittently - contacted me with fulsome apologies for his actions here (doubtless entirely sincere, at the times they were sent) and assurances of no repetition, which have indeed typically been followed by long silences from him ... until his next "posting outbreak".

It all depends "how things are going for him", clearly.

I'd really be very grateful if people would please simply "report" his posts, not reply to them, not "quote" them, and not even keep messaging me about them (very grateful indeed though I am for all the unreservedly kind support, I hasten to add!! ).

There it is: I have no more to add.

No problem at all - don't worry! I was quite pleased to have an opportunity to explain what's going on to a huge number of people wondering. On the one hand, one doesn't necessarily want to draw too much attention to it, but on the other hand, it was convenient to say something. Your question kindly provided me with an opportunity to try to strike that "balance".

it's been very crazy today - man oh man, I don't envy the mods, I really don't.
Too right, it's been on every thread I'm subscribed to!

No indeed ... exactly what I've been thinking, recently. And here's a good place to express my gratitude to them, as ever, for all they do (behind the scenes as well as in front), to prevent a forum with 450,000 members from descending into a madhouse. I suspect it's quite some achievement.

Funny, I have been here for four years and never noticed any of this !!

Is someone going to deal with this joker once and for all?

Getting really fed up of adding this person to my ignore list. Everytime you think something new has been posted, it's this joker with some form of vendetta. Suggest who ever you are, take it elsewhere. If you're not happy with something go and call the police.

Just ignore it and enjoy reporting him. He is a very sad and deranged man who clearly has nothing to do all day but make up nonsense and spend all day creating new accounts, hiding behind proxies, to try and discredit people.

The fact is it's a very sad reflection on a very sad man. I feel desperately sorry for him and I'm extremely grateful I didn't wind up with the deep rooted issues he so clearly has.

Eventually he'll have to stop to drink some water, eat some food and have a sleep. He's been at this for ages now. Pity the man, I certainly do. Heaven help his next door neighbours as well.

Besides, the longer he does this, the more people wind up laughing at him. He just doesn't know when to stop bless him.

If only Stafford was closer to London, Richard. I'd be round in a shot (or for a shot, or two...or the bottle)

I have hit the little red triangle more times than we care. However, the poster continues posting about the wonders of see alice and rorex reprica. There must be a lot of alice users. Well, here anyway. People should have their first 20 messages sent to a moderation queue. That is what I do in my forum that has over 40,000 members to prevent spam messages.

Relevant bump time before this clown comes back. Just hit the triangle and report the sucker. The mods will make him disappear. He's not reading your replies and quoting the message helps no one.

I suggest if he isn't tired yet that we make a game out of it. The challenge? Make his posts disappear faster than he can put them up.
