What To Do When Someone is SPAMMING THIS FORUM

Hi guys,

Just hit the report button please, and don't bother to comment on the thread.

Paul Myers revealed to me that if you comment right under the spammer you risk your name being too close to the spammer and a technical error can occur such as your account getting wiped out by accident. Rare occurrence, but apparently has happened in the past.

Look for the little red triangle and hit it.

If it is hit enough times, the post will go poof.

  • **** it Jill. I have reported more than 8 of them this morning. The threads get deleted, but dude is not banned and keeps on keeping on.

I think the ban button is broken this morning.

But hey, not my problem is it?
    • [3] replies
    • Here is another word of warning too - if you are even thinking about checking those links or downloading you may want to think again.

You might get something very evil on your computer if you do.

      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • I understand but commenting on their thread will not make them go away any faster. All it does is brings the threads back to the top of the forum so these idiots get even more exposure before they are banned.

If we all just ignore them and report the post they will be gone soon enough.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • That's because the mods are too busy deleting your threads and posts -- the spammers will have to wait.

I just hit a banner ad here...that lead to a WSO...that sells a piece of software...that SPAMS FORUMS. Hilarious. But the developers assure us it's "LEGALL" (stet).
    • [ 9 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
  • Thanks, Jill, I never even noticed that button. I also see there's an "add infraction" button. I think I'll ignore that one for now, but it's good to be able to report blatant spam posts.

Edit: it's probably a good thing that these buttons are not too easy to find. Otherwise, that could be another form of spamming, which is a problem on sites like YouTube, where people like to "report" videos they don't like, or just for the hell of it.
    • [1] reply
    • Not that this is important to this thread, I just want to get but it off my chest a similar experience. I was simurly attacked on ezine becuse a person with a simular product falsely reported on his computition to get their articles banned or whatever. Frustrating to say the least.

Hope that sort of thing isn't happening here, although it appears that the potential for that sort of abuse exists.
  • Jill,That's not a technical glitch. It's human error. I fat-moused an account that way last week.

It's very uncommon, but that doesn't make it any less annoying and inconvenient for the person who gets zapped. I think, between the bunch of us, it's happened 4 times in the past 3 years. Twice to the same person, bless her forgiving soul.

Lots of good advice in this thread, but there's one thing that was left out:

There will occasionally be times when there's no moderator watching things. Just report the stuff and remain calm. The fact that things don't disappear immediately might be for that simple reason.

Putting insulting comments about the moderation team in the reports isn't going to make things happen any faster.

    • Well that takes the fun out of it!

I usually try to quote Monty Python in my complaints..."Spam and eggs", "Egg Bacon and Spam","egg, bacon, sausage and spam"...and so on.

      ~keith
    • LOL! But when you see a troll posting thread after thread with download links for WSOs or something equally despicable, all the while rubbing his warty little hands together and jumping up and down in glee, it's hard to stay calm and wait for him to be banned.
    • Paul,

I was just trying to make you look good. I know you would never make a mistake. It's always the computers fault or a software error.

    • LOL Good point. :p

      Sorry guys.

I was a little testy this morning.

Not to be making excuses, but I did have surgery yesterday and I am about out of pain pills. Dammit... When the pain pills are gone, all I will have left to keep my sanity is my children, who may be beaten quicker and more frequently than normal. :p

p.s. For those concerned about possible abuse... It is a joke...

  • Yep, it happened to me, but luckily not all of my posts were deleted. All of the THREADS I had started were erased, including my most successful WSO ever (up to that date).

It's a shame, because I used to love messing with spammer's heads.

Now I just click the red triangle.

    • Thanks for the reminder, Jill. I've used that little red triangle quite a few times - for spammers and also for new members who post a bunch of similar one-liners in the space of a few minutes just to get their post count up .

The mods are great about quickly getting rid of them once they've been reported. I do understand the temptation to respond to them as they are so irritating, but reporting them is easy and far more effective.

  • IMHO you guys are a little ban happy. the mod for this section of the forum is not even online and my thread was deleted in less than 10 minutes for offering free training? i am a paying war room member not a spammer. give it a rest people!
    • [1] reply
    • Rich,If that was the case, you'd have been banned for posting a recruiting ad in a discussion section.

Paying for War Room access gets you the privileges that go with it. It does not exempt you from the rules.

      Paul
  • Mr. Wells,

From time to time that may and does occur. However, IMO, most folks here stay above board when reporting a thread.

Not only that the "Actual Moderators" are pretty smart about picking up on an "assassination" attempt by someone on someone else.

Now I have my brownie points in for the day.

    Ken
  • I had my thread deleted today because I was thinking of making a WSO out of it.

Guess I won't now since apparently the WF doesn't want me to make WSO's out of my threads.
    • [2] replies
    • That's right.

They like you to use the WSO section and pay for it like everyone else has too.
    • Really? When I did that two years ago, I got banned for a week.

Primarily because we have an ongoing and persistent problem with people starting threads about "why doesn't someone make THIS product?" when they have already made it. Then, when people act interested and he can see the market potential, HEY PRESTO there's a WSO.

That's advertising, not discussion, and it's against the rules. Trouble is, sometimes it's hard to tell whether someone's advertising or honestly thinking about creating a new product - and mistakes get made. Oh well. Suck it up and live with it.

Unless, of course, you were actually advertising and deserved to get your thread deleted. In which case it serves you right. :p
  • Cool.

I'll remember that when I launch my forum spamming WSO.
    • [1] reply
    • Don't even joke about that idea. We recently banned a prominent member for 30 days for advocating spamming this forum. What makes you think we won't just remove you entirely if you do that?

    • A thread about a method or strategy will run just fine - until you mention it's going to be/may be/ could be your WSO. That makes it promotional.

A thread is where you share information - a WSO is where you sell it.

  • I curl up into the fetal position and rock myself back and forth until they stop.
  • I haven't done it, click on the triangle, because I am not too much in this forum, and there are a lot of great people in the forum, but the thing to do is ignore the person and let the moderators take care of the obvious spam post whereby they have nothing to contribute to the forum. Contribution is key and if nothing is contributed then they are a taker, err, spammer, and not a giver to the forum to teach and let others learn and grow.
    • [1] reply
  • Just a reminder for everyone to check your 'blog' and or 'visitor' page if you have one activated. Since these areas of the forum are often neglected for months at a time - it's not uncommon for a spammer to have their links sitting pretty in your own little section of the WF.

  • So that's the second time today we've been inundated with the 'Alexa Smith' scam virus. Is there any way to block people so you can't see their posts? I'd sooner switch off the forum spammers and not have to view repetitive posts all with the same content.

What good would that do? That person who's been doing the "Alexa Smith" postings will get banned and then create a whole new account and repeat the process.

LOL, the irony of it: I've "gone viral", apparently, and I'm not even selling/promoting anything here.

The thing to do is report those posts, and the moderators will remove them.

Yes - you can put people on an "ignore" list (which is what I did myself, a long time ago, under his real name, with the indivudual who's now making all the posts about me - and that meant as a bonus I didn't see his private messages, which said the same things, as well his posts. Not so easy when he keeps changing his damn name all the time, admittedly ... but at least that way we get the rather weird irony that it's someone remaining anonymous who's questioning the identity of someone who made the (entirely unnecessary) mistake of using her real name here! ).

Click on "User CP" (top left) and then "edit options", and scroll down the left-hand side a little - under "settings and options" you'll see "edit ignore list".

Nothing is worth replying to. I reiterate this forum is about internet marketing and everything that goes along with it.

Personally, I don't care who people SAY they are or who they REALLY are. What concerns me is the value of the information that they're offering. Sure, there are a lot of people here who aren't who they say they are, but who cares?

It's about the money and earning an honest living. If you're really a guy posing as a woman on this forum I don't care -- neither should anybody else.
    • Banned
Not really, but that was more or less how he saw it, anyway.

This is a person in some very stressful and unpleasant circumstances, whose thought-processes (as so many have noticed) sometimes aren't altogether rational, for a variety of unfortunate reasons, some of which are actually not his own fault, to be fair.

I bear him no ill-will at all. I tried to help him and was ultimately unable to, and eventually had to draw a line.

There was a lot I didn't originally know about him, and when I first started talking with him I was only 18/19, myself, and I might handle such a situation altogether differently now.

I've never been or felt judgmental about him, or about his circumstances - not to his face and not behind his back. I hope his circumstances improve, though I suspect at the moment the opposite may be the case. I encourage the many others here who know who he is and a little about "the story" not to think ill of him, in spite of his behavior here. I wish him no harm at all, albeit that (like so many others here) I do wish he'd stop posting!

But saying this doesn't help (which is partly why I haven't said more about this in the past), when someone isn't altogether responsible for his actions.

I haven't spoken with him or replied to him for a very long time, now, but he has - intermittently - contacted me with fulsome apologies for his actions here (doubtless entirely sincere, at the times they were sent) and assurances of no repetition, which have indeed typically been followed by long silences from him ... until his next "posting outbreak".

It all depends "how things are going for him", clearly.

I'd really be very grateful if people would please simply "report" his posts, not reply to them, not "quote" them, and not even keep messaging me about them (very grateful indeed though I am for all the unreservedly kind support, I hasten to add!! ).

There it is: I have no more to add.

No problem at all - don't worry! I was quite pleased to have an opportunity to explain what's going on to a huge number of people wondering. Getting really fed up of adding this person to my ignore list. Everytime you think something new has been posted, it's this joker with some form of vendetta. Suggest who ever you are, take it elsewhere. If you're not happy with something go and call the police.

    • Just ignore it and enjoy reporting him. He is a very sad and deranged man who clearly has nothing to do all day but make up nonsense and spend all day creating new accounts, hiding behind proxies, to try and discredit people.

The fact is it's a very sad reflection on a very sad man. I feel desperately sorry for him and I'm extremely grateful I didn't wind up with the deep rooted issues he so clearly has.

Eventually he'll have to stop to drink some water, eat some food and have a sleep. He's been at this for ages now. Pity the man, I certainly do. Heaven help his next door neighbours as well.

Besides, the longer he does this, the more people wind up laughing at him. He just doesn't know when to stop bless him.
