Newtons First Law... and Why Super Affiliates Use it Every Day

Hey Warriors,

This will get slightly science-y so bare with me for a second- I do bring it back to IM

Do you remember in middle school/high school learning about momentum?

It's basically when some type of mass is moving in a certain direction.

To get even more science-ish and nerdy (I'm an engineer by trade so hear me out!)- Newton's First Law says that:

"An object that is in motion will not change its velocity unless an unbalanced force acts upon it"

So in other words, when something is moving a certain direction, it's going to keep moving that way until something else interrupts it.

Think of a ball rolling down a hill. It's going to keep going in one direction- down hill- UNTIL something stops it! A tree, a bush, car, whatever.

Now how does this apply to your IM business? Simple.

Nature tells us to use the power of momentum- to move in ONE direction at a time- and that if we let something get in our way, things grind to a halt.

So when you're working on Website A- writing press releases, making videos, writing articles, etc- DON'T get distracted by Website B! It will kill your momentum with A, and probably kill your profits.

Or when you're trying new WSO A, you've got some momentum with it (maybe the website is set up and now you just have to drive traffic)- DON'T let WSO B get in your way!

There's are so many studies out there that show multitasking to be inefficient, it's ridiculous. Even if you are working on just 2-3 projects (which most of us are), studies show that you will probably take MUCH longer on those projects than if you just focus on one at a time.

So doing a little bit of 3 projects every day may take you 2 months, right. Because you're constantly switching back and forth, changing your mindset, what you're promoting, etc.

Doing one task at a time might take you a month- or less! You will be very focused, able to get TONS more work done at a time, and just dominate with that product and niche.

You see letting Method B get in the way of Method A does 2 things:

1) It slows down A's progress
2) It does just about NOTHING to B, because it takes a while to get back into the mindset of "okay now I'm doing Method B" and get in the groove

That's the power of momentum, of Newton's First Law. Nature tells you that its natural to KEEP GOING FORWARD, not let other projects get in the way of the one you're working on right now!

P.S. If you've ever played (or heavily followed) a sport, you might know what it's like to be "in the zone." An athlete in the zone won't care what they ate for dinner, won't think about what they're doing that weekend, or won't hear a THING that the crowd is doing.

They're focused on WINNING. Do the same with your IM business- get in "the zone"- and make $$$

P.P.S. Thanks forever to Charlie Sheen for making me think of "Bi-Winning" whenever I hear the word winning.

Great post, although my head hurts thinking back to middle school science class. The concept actually translates very well and I find that I keep letting things stop my momentum every day. I find myself going against what the scientists say; and feel that multitasking is a talent, not a detrement.

Mental blocks are the biggest killer, and even as I'm taking two steps forward, I still take one step back. I need to find a good hill to roll down.

  • I do agree in the "one project at a time" mantra. It is always worked best for me too.

    Hey,

Great post. I couldn't agree more. My buddy Pete wrote a blog post on this where he called it being a fat pidgeon. I know from my own experience that it wasn't untill I set my sights on 1 niche and 1 campaign that things fell into place.

Now we do internet marketing experiments on our blog which means we're constantly doing lots of different things at once. It's great fun but my main income is from one big, unique high ranking site that I worked on almost exclusively for a year before we started playing around with other things.

Good advice. I normally have too many projects going on at one time ... and if often drives me nuts thinking about it all. lol.

I always apply Newton's third law into internet marketing.

The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear.

If simply says, Every action has same reaction.

Very good post and a very simple law to implement. I'll certainly be using this in my business.

    Thanks for the share.

Great post and advice. Focusing on one project only at any given time is the key to getting to things done - though sometimes easier said than done in the IM world!

Wow! thats interesting. I have many parallel projects that i started long time ago and neither is finished. I was working on the idea of killing two birds with one stone but it has taken a long time timing. i believe the saying goes with chances and not a daily routine.

Ok, young millionaire, you started the science thingie. I'll follow up on it.

I'm a big fan of LeChatelier's Principle. With apologies to the guy, this is the Reader's Digest Condensed version:

"When a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium, the system reacts in such a way as to relieve that stress."

So when newbies start out in IM they often get scattered and try to do dozens of things at once. That creates a frustration (the stress) and the stress is most often relieved by giving up altogether on the whole thing. You're right, it is all about focus.

Prioritize your goals. Find which is the most important to you and zero in on it aggressively until it is finished. It's far better to have one thing earning well for you than ten things, not of which earn a dime. Nice post. --Mike

Yes consistency and focus are key. Develop a plan which makes sense and then stick with it. When I first started dabbling in IM, I did article marketing and was fairly successful with it. Then as I got more into it, I started to get distracted by all the "MAKE MONEY WITH NO WORK" offers. Or I investigated training programs and resources to the point where I got no real work done.

So my advice it to develop and stick with a plan. It will eventually pay off significantly. Good luck!
