Can I capitalize on a non-commercial site that USED to get a lot of traffic?

I'm a newbie and pretty green about all this IM stuff. I have a product I sell via the net and that's what motivated me to come here to learn more about internet marketing.

I also have a not-for-profit site that used to get a decent amount of traffic and at times got thousands of hits per month. That site has dwindled down to only a few hits per day but it still has google ranking for its keywords.

I was going to close it down but then I wondered "Is there maybe a way I can use this not-for-profit site that used to have a lot of traffic, to get more juice for my commercial web site?"

So I'm looking for ideas and opinions on this. Should I just close the not-for-profit site down and forget about it or is there a way to capitalize on its former popularity in promoting my product?

I'm thinking, without seeing it, that the not for profit site would not be targeted traffic for the for profit site, even if it did have traffic, so not certain it would be worth the effort. If it were an easy thing to bring the traffic back you could flip it in Flippa if you think the site has some value rather than deleting it.

It's possible but you'll get very low number of clicks because traffic aren't targeted. Anyway, you'll be able to get good results with a product what? speaks to common desires/needs of people.

In this situation I would go under some monitoring process and used some products or some ad networks like adsense to see that whether the site generates some profit for me.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the answer is basically "no". I just wanted to check with people who know about such things before I close 'er down. I'll keep it open a little while longer just in case I think of a way or someone else gives me an idea as to how to use it to my benefit.

Hold on...How old is the site? How much does it cost you to keep it going?

Just having an old, established site can have some SEO benefits, such as links in and out. Can you build links to it, then use it to link to other sites you have?

It's about a year old, had a lot of traffic the last half of 2010 (not a "lot" as in tens of thousands but a few thousand hits per month or something like that) and costs nothing to keep open.

I could maybe create a page for home businesses and link my site there, maybe even offer a blog page etc...

As Kurt said, you can still link from there to other sites and get some benefits. Perhaps also you can use the existing site to link to amazon books on starting a non-profit or contact some adwords advertisers that already pay for ads on similar pages.

I like the idea of putting ads there for books and etc. related to the site. Maybe I could pick up a few bucks that way...
