What is the best way to do an opt-in on a wordpress blog without using a paid service such as aweber? Is there a plugin that would allow users to fill in name and email address so that I can send them a copy of the latest posts right to their inbox?

I'm sure there is but I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for yet. Maybe its just too early on a Saturday!

I'm not sure what you're looking for but I just googled Wordpress opt in plug in and several different ones come up - single and double opt ins. Hope one on them would work for you.

If you want it automated the only thing I can think of without using a service is an RSS feed. Using an RSS feed doesn't give you their email address and most of the people who do sign up are other IM'ers looking to swipe your content.

you can use a tool like PopUP Domination to attract visitor
to subscribe but you will still need a autoresponder service
    to send out your message.

    Aweber
    Getresponse
    Icontact

If you are looking to build a solid long term business then you will need
to have a autoresponder. The cost is only $20.00 per month.

You could also sign up quarterly for $49.00 or yearly for $149.00

So you can pay yearly upfront so you don't have to worry about the
    monthly fee.

Thanks for the input, guys. I bit the bullet and used Aweber. Like it was said above, if I want to build a business then I need to use a proper tool.

If all you want is for them to be notified of new posts- then feedburner is your answer. Most people already use it anyway-

But, I know you said you don't want to pay for an email provider like aweber or iContact- but it starts at $10/month- and besides hosting- it is a necessity. I realize you might not be making money yet- but think about all of the people coming to your site right now that leave to never come back... Building a list is one of the best insurance plans against losing different traffic streams for various reasons.
