How to presell in less than 100 characters?

I've finally bitten the bullet and got into Twitter marketing. I found some keywords phrases which clearly indicate some sort of problem, and I'm directing them to simple one page CPA offers which I think are relevant. For example:

Keyword: "I want a widget"
Response: "Maybe you can find a widget here. __URL__"

According to my URL shortener, I'm driving a few thousand clicks a day, but I'm only getting conversions in the single digits.

What am I doing wrong?

Using Twitter instead of pre-selling effectively to highly targeted traffic, I think.

Considering that most sales pages only get single-digit conversions, I'm not sure you can realistically expect more considering your main marketing tactic.

When you consider that CPA offers often have requirements that turn people off, and some are recognizable for what they are, you might be lucky you're doing that well.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I know single digit conversions are expected, I'm getting something in the neighborhood of 1 conversion in every 1500 clicks. I'm assuming I can do better than that. I'm just not sure how.

I realize relationship building is important, but I'm not really sure how to do that with this form of interruption marketing.

That's your problem. You're using interruption marketing on a social network.

Like Alexa said "pre-sell". Send them directly to a squeeze page where you offer them something of real value in exchange for their email address. Then you have the opportunity to sell to them repeatedly. Provide value first, which should also increase your total clicks.
