2 Year Old Domain - New Profits

Funny how things go round in IM world.

As most of you know, one common advice when discussing domain names is to "Don't buy them unless you have something to do with them", right?

Well, I buy alot of domain names. More then advised really. But 2-3 years ago I bought at least 60-80 EMD's (Exact Match Domain Names) and only developed a small fraction of them. The rest is just getting dust, although small 5 pages sites are online on each on them.

Funny thing is how all the good TLD's are gone, and now I get a lot of emails from potential buyers. They want my TLD's cause they can only buy long tail keyword domain names - if any, so my good ones are definitely a good option.

And more: everytime I get a email from a buyer I know one of these domain names just got ranked high, and people see them with a small site with no monetization and obviously they try to buy it. So I just have to bring in the cavalry with new unique content and monetize them at will.

In the end, it's all adding up to monthly profits.

And it's so funny to get people trying to buy a Top20 EMD, targeting good keywords in high CTR niches (credit, weight loss, travel) for as low as 50$. Most probably ain't any of you, cause these are PT domain names, but I can't stop laughing everytime I get one of these offers.

So yes, "Don't buy domain names unless you have something to do with them". Otherwise you might get profits in a couple years. And we all know that can be damaging. lol

Probably, but the fact these are top level domain names = profits anytime. And this is not a one time wonder: it's been happening more and more, especially in markets where the good domain names are all gone.

I think investing in domains can be a good idea. Who knows how much would one be after a few years. Have you tried auctionpus for buying domain?

I am sure "some" domain names are a good investment - but some others aren't. And I never used any auction to buy/sell my domain names.

I agree if you know what domain names will be great for sale in the coming years. Before buying any of those you might as well consider the type of niche that are getting so much interest now like those related to environment, health and I guess e-books. Proper study of the markets would help you decide which domain names to buy.

I have been buying for more than 10 years now. Some I develop and most I just hang on to. I get email solicitations from whois and sell a few but, for the most part I am holding tight with some great keyword ( niche ) domains.

Have you been able to sell some of them for a good profit?

Has there been any resonable offers or just really low ones?

Last year I sold a pair ( singular and plural ) both .com in a niche , for 5-figures each in a private sale. I owned them for 7 years and contact was made via whois. They did start at 100. and we spoke on the phone a few times and then settled in to the real negotiation.
The bottom line was I did not care if I sold them or not and they understood that. For me to sell them required higher price and they actually made a final offer that I accepted and I flew to a nearby state and did the transaction face to face.

I truly consider domains to be money in the bank !

Sold a couple profitable sites to big companies, but the usual offer is 50$ per domain name - perhaps someone told them this is a good price? :p . But as I told in the OP this is Portuguese market - roughly translates to a relatively new market (people are not that informed on prices, although new IM'ers are learning what they're doing).

That's great. I only sold domain+ sites, and last year had a really good sale, it was a 3 year old site. I even started a "different" sales funnel to make some sales, but unfortunately the market it's not ready YET.

One more reason to keep these domains under my belt.
