Guess who used to sleep like a baby every night?

<----------This guy.

Guess who always has 100 ideas racing through his head these days, so he can NEVER sleep?

<-----------This guy.

Seriously, I need to stop doing IM like 30 minutes or more before bed. Otherwise I just think IM until 2:30am and be wide awake...

o **** thats exactly what is happening to me! I took 2 benadryls which I have always used to help me sleep and its 3:34 a.m. and im still awake. Its because I want to start a real buisness (not a tiny niche site or blogger) and so many things are running through my head of how to run it!

I've found a shot or two of good Tequilla to be very helpful in getting to sleep... [smile] Sometimes it also provides another perspective to problems that have been rolling around in the head for a few days.

Seriously, I always keep a pad and pen next to the bed so I can jot down anything that comes up during the night, and go right back to sleep. Also, when I have too much rolling through my head to get to sleep in the first place, I quickly jot the items down and then "forget about" them. This single thing has dramatically helped me to sleep, and reduced the amount of "medicinal" Tequilla that is ingested, thereby allowing me to buy better quality brands...

Maybe I'm lucky there. I'm an insomniac who often goes on little sleep, and I usually need to be completely exhausted (mentally and physically) before I do. And that was long before I started this. Now its become a productive substitute for extra energy that would otherwise be whittled away on useless distractions that only serve to keep my mind from going off on 101 different tangents.

Now I'm more foused. Ideas come, but they're productive and can either implemented right away or set aside for later (here I need to start keeping some kind of journal to track them rather than relying on my memory).

I'm at my most creative and productive during the middle part of my "wake state" and that's when I focus on the creative or high energy stuff like writing. I "warm up" my day by checking in here briefly, skimming the flood of e-mail from all the lists I've wound up on since getting into IM, and then start on the more creative stuff. After that I switch to link-building (and usually multi-task while doing it) and wind down the same way I started the day, but in reverse.

Works well for me so far. The end of the "day" (which may be 5 am) is when I'll ask anything here I'm either curious about, would like feedback on, or just don't have the answer to. And I also respond to posts like this that allow me to mentally unwind without hijacking someone else's thread. :p

It's ok to put passion in your IM endeavors, but I think you're doing too much.

Regarding sleep, that's a personal problem. I guess you should only focus on one idea at a time, instead of getting 100's of ideas and not putting them into practice. Takes time to "master" that, but it pays out.

One idea at a time. Instead take the time out to write these ideas down and go over them later. Try one out for 2 weeks and see what happens. If the results are what your looking for then do again and scale it out. simple. Do whats is working and ditch whats not. I have found that my juices are more creative at night so I can feel you on that one man.

I went to bed past midnight already trying to finish my tasks for the day. The minute I woke up, I was already thinking of a million things I need to do.

My kids tell me I'm addicted to IM. I actually have to make an effort to do non-IM stuff to balance out my life.

Nothing worse than being excited about your Life!

Relax, and enjoy it! I agree that some outside exercise will help you balance out the energy... AND - Increase your stamina for future efforts.

I also write down, record, and generally feed the idea machine. It will be very appreciated when the well goes temporarily dry...

Enjoy the Season you are in, for Seasons eventually will change... but you can guide the change to a degree...

Write your committed goals down, and put them where you can see them... even if they are in your peripheral vision - you will be able to check off each goal as they are achieved.

This may also assist your sleep efforts. Reassurance that you are on track can also help to balance the excited energy.

        Enjoy the Adventure!

Don't stop. Eat, Sleep, Dream IM. I have some of my best ideas when I'm about to fall asleep. I even literally dreamed up one of my best sites.

Use it to your advantage, don't back off. That's what success is about.

Yep, I get this often too.

I find having a notepad and pen on the bedside table helps. If you have any ideas at all, write them down.

I find it sort of takes it out of my head and clears it for sleep! ; )

    You have 2 possible options...

    1. Get a white board and get into the habit of doing brain dumps.
    2. Valium.

    Good luck.

hahaha - I remember when I bought the original copy of Make Your Site Sell, way back when, that sucker pulled so many ideas out of my head, I don't think I slept for a week. I had a note pad next to my bed and would jot down stuff, some days it looked a little mangled in the morning but I usually figured it out.

To the OP. The trick though is to take all those thoughts, see which are feasible or can be expanded upon and execute, otherwise, they're just ideas.

I have the same issue whenever I get into something. IM is one of those things. Just take some melatonin and relax. Coming up with ideas when you're in bed isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. I come up with some of my best stuff in bed.

Don't get me wrong- I am definitely focusing a lot more these days.

But that doesn't mean my mind is always thinking of new stuff!

I think its mainly if I'm working right before bed. I might try Tim Ferris's suggestion and try reading a fiction book for at least 20-30 minutes before I go to sleep.

I also need to get in more consistent workouts in the afternoon/evening to make sure my body is ready for some sleep!

I do the same thing. Another warrior gave me a great tip. Make a google docs or word doc or whatever, and write it down and leave it. Then focus on one idea and get that idea making you a grand a month consistently for a few months (I'd say 3-6 months). If you see you can't reach that goal, it might be time to move on, but the things you will learn in pursuit of that one goal will translate to all of your other ideas. Once you hit your goal, start outsourcing as much as you can on that particular project and then start on the next project. That's what I'm doing.

Hmm, what an amazingly appropriate thread. Nobody has worse hours than an internet marketer. Why? Because we can work at any time.

I've gotten better with sleep as I've learned to focus and compartmentalize. But also, I really only rely on search traffic (auto-pilot) so often times there's not much more for me to think about, other than back links. lol

However, I'm thinking of doing a WSO on here and that might keep me up worried something goes wrong. The workaholic aspect of this job is fine. I'd rather have that, then be a slave to some 8-5 repetitive brain dead job.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'm off to take an all natural sleep aid - they work wonders for me.

Any advice people?? What I am REALLY good at is article writing, so what IM project should I start with? HELP COS I NEED TO SLEEP SOMETIME!!

Try writing everything down that's buzzing in your head.

Subconsciously you'll know you will remember what you need to, thus the ideas will stop buzzing around.

    LOL I'm with you!

I have to force myself sometimes to get away from the comp - worst thing is when you have dozens of projects and start putting in all nighters...

I have never been that good at it to be honest and need my beauty sleep lol

There is no problem to put too much at internet marketing. But thinking about it even in your sleep nights... it is not good anymore. Try to control yourself from doing it. After all, having a great ideas at IM won't let you down.

That happens from newbies to old pros. But I would say welcome those late night thoughts (as long as you work from home and don't have a J.O.B. to go to in the morning) because what I've found is that some of my best ideas come when I'm just laying in bed trying to go to sleep. Once I get a good idea, I jump out of bed and write it down before I forget. If I don't write it down, chances are I won't remember that great idea again!

The best thing to do is lay on your bed as early as possible. Have your pen and paper or your mobile phone with you so you can take notes of the ideas you have in mind while on bed. The lesser exposure to your laptop, the more you can feel sleepy. Or take a physical activity right after you face your laptop, say by 8-9pm you do some running around and by the time you feel tired, I'm sure you'll fall asleep easily.

I understand what you're going through, same thing happened to me. This stuff just gets so addicting! Eventually for me i chose an idea and blocked out the rest and focused on that one idea alone. First few days still couldn't sleep but when i wrote it all down and started taking action i felt that i accomplished something and am moving towards my goal. After that then i could sleep again each night
