How I got over 2,300 twitter followers for FREE!!!

First I have to tell you I did not use any twitter marketing secrets or super techniques. The method I used is boring, mundane and mentioned in every half reasonable twitter marketing guide. The free ones

Step One - Place something interesting and relevant to your niche in your twitter profile.

Step Two - Use an attractive and niche relevant twitter back ground.

Step Three - Make a list of 4-5 big movers in your niche who have say 10k or more of twitter followers

Step Four - This is the boring but essential part. Go through the list of people following your number one big mover from step 3 and follow 2000 of them. Twitter will not let you follow more. Make sure you don't do more than 200 a day so this will take you around 10 days.

Depending on how well you do steps one and two, at least 500 of these people will follow you back.

Step Five - Unfollow all of the people you followed in Step four. If you want to be careful, unfollow a maximum of 200 a day.

You will lose some followers but not many so don't worry.

Step Six - Repeat steps 4 and 5

My results - I did this process three times and currently have 2360'ish followers that are all very relevant to my niche.

My mistakes - I made mistakes. I did not have a nice back ground until round 3. I only limited the people I followed to 200 a day in round 3.

Boring - This is boring and some what time consuming but you can do it in your town time like when you are watching tv or chatting to people online.

Help - there are a lot of programs/services that will identify the people you are following who are not following and do other stuff. I tried 3 but found they either did not work properly or were not worth the effort.

Next - Now I need to learn how to use this mass of followers to drive traffic and interest to the blog I want them for. Any tips and suggestions are welcome

Thanks for the insight. I have to agree with your strategy.

I personally find that even though manually following / unfollowing people on twitter is time-consuming, it is far more rewarding in the long run. The reason being, as you mentioned that many of the tools available are not always accurate or reliable.

The other good part of following people manually is that you can gague much better than a pc from their bio's what they either like or are interested in achieving on twitter. This again is most often more accurate in helping you decide whether this would be targeted traffic or not compared to relying on single keyword searches from individuals bio's which can bring up a list of suggested people to follow on twitter.

If I had to follow everyone twitter suggests that I follow, the majority of my list would consist of actors, singers, chefs, etc. Mostly people who have made a name or a buck for themselves and would probably not be interested in tips to run a home business effectively anyway!

Things do however get a bit more tricky when trying to find followers in targeted areas as not everyone specifies their location on twitter. I am currently trying to find interested followers for my gifting and declutter services in the gauteng area. I am however having to follow 'local famous people' and sift through their followers to try and establish which followers are based in gauteng and then establish from their bio's whether they will be interested in the services I provide. It's slow going and trial and error at this stage, but I am sure it will pay off.

For certain processes, the manual approach is still very effective and in my opinion, this is one of them.

    Thanks again for the insight.

      Hi Brendon L,

How I got over 2,300 twitter followers for FREE!!!
      Forgive the bluntness -

I can tell you how to get 1000s of dollars per year for free.

      Here's the secret -

Get a job, do the job and collect the pay.

It's the same concept that you are presenting here, with the exception that with my concept you will probably earn some money.

The reason that the concepts are the same is because you are placing no value whatsoever on the time that you spend carrying out work.

Your twitter followers are only free if the above is the case. In truth, they are not free, they are quite costly, particularly in respect of the likely ROI.

Therefore the only real lesson I can see within this thread is the one that you didn't intend to present, that you MUST value your time and your efforts, otherwise you just end up talking nonsense.

I'm no Twitter aficionado at all, Brendon, but even I know (just from reading threads here) that Twitter has quite a long history of banning people for doing this (especially steps 4 - 6).

What do you sell/promote yourself? Have any of these 2,300 people you now have following you actually bought whatever it is you're selling/promoting from/through you?

    • It's easy getting followers on Twitter. But you can't tell by looking at their bio if they are spammers, actual people or fake profiles set up for a specific purpose.

I worked my original Twitter account like a demon for six months. Sent out daily tweets in rhyme, talked about the occasional interesting personal item, and only casually (like once a month) tweeted about a sale event.

All that effort netted me a ton of followers and one actual customer. My typical customer acquisition cost is $5. I lost money on Twitter big-time.

The ROI just isn't there for me.

But the Twitter boosters never seem to stop -- or consider reality. Blinded by FREE, I suppose.

How responsive are the 2300 followers? I have made money from having around 100 followers who were all real people, targeted and engaging in conversation.

Of those 2300 how many are auto follow backs with spammy twitterfeed updates?

I'm not selling my followers products to making money is not an issue. They are all interested in tourism and I blog on a tourism niche. I provide them with information of their interest and they (hopefully) provide me with traffic.

True. This was a learning exercise for me so happy to do it myself. Once.

In the beginning, twitter will only allow you to follow a maximum of 2000 people. Once you reach 2000 the only way to continue following people (and have them follow you back) is to unfollow that 2000 and start again.

Thank you for your bluntness. Refreshing in an IM forum

I do have a day job that does pay thousands but that is not the issue.

I'm working on building up a blog and getting useful genuine traffic. It is a learning experience for me and involves a fair bit of experimentation. One thing I'm trying to do is have multiple sources of traffic that includes facebook, twitter, guest blogging and so forth.

The twitter followers I have are very niche relevant (the real ones, not he spam ones) and by themselves with the long term traffic they provide, may be a good ROI. Factor in the learning experience and it was definitely a good ROI.

Nothing. I don't try to make money from them or spam them.

My profile clearly states I blog about travel and they see that when they follow me. All I twitter them is my travel focused articles. Can't get much less spammy than that.

I don't sell anything on twitter or even on that blog. They are interested in travel and I write about travel with that blog. I promote the blog to my followers by writing quality and original articles.

From what I've learnt, trying to sell stuff on twitter is a waste of time.

        Hi Brendon L,

To clarify my point, if you had added some of the information in your above post into the original post -

making money is not an issue
I don't sell anything on twitter or even on that blog.
This was a learning exercise for me so happy to do it myself. Once.
...along with the changes that I *think* you have added to the original post already, plus a subtle rewording of your thread title to something that didn't emphasise 'for FREE!!!', then I probably wouldn't have posted a reply.

As it stands, I'm wondering how this thread justifies it's own existence (in terms of what people can learn from it) when -

I did not use any twitter marketing secrets or super techniques. The method I used is boring, mundane and mentioned in every half reasonable twitter marketing guide. The free ones
This was a learning exercise for me so happy to do it myself. Once.

it was definitely a good ROI.

I did mine manually as well and wrote a thread about this the other day, I set up a site that is a big niche but easy to find people in that niche on twitter. I've got just over 700 followers and have had people register to my blog and begin posting. So it won't take long before I start seeing sales. I'm following anywhere from 150 to 200 new people per day, I also got about 8 link exchanges too from people in my niche, so I think I'm working it pretty good.

Interesting post. I have been experimenting with Twitter and am amazed how easy it is to get followers. But that's all I've done so far, no real method just seeing what's what there. I appreciate that Twitter people are not as ready to buy but if I can get enough followers I thought it might be worth it.

I thought that linking through to a blog which would be lightly monetized but high in content would be the way to go.

I have used similar tactics and my twitter following now stands at about 2,300. I also got a fair amount of natural followers through connecting with the major players in my niche through mentions and retweets.

I think I get about 30 or so clicks every time I post a link to my site and most of my site's biggest fans are people that follow it on Twitter.

Plus I really think displaying that Twitter follower count on my site yields some serious legitimacy to it. That is probably my favorite part.

PS. I use http://justunfollow.com really makes my job easier.

Twitter is not something you can automate and get results despite all the software available that promises you can.

You have to be consistent with it and work hard at engaging with the people you see as you target market....yes you post things that are of interest to them but do not leave it to chance they will find you...take full advantage of the excellent search function on Twitter to find people asking for you help then send them a quick tweet and engage with them....

...that is a million times more effective than just following lots of people and hoping you pick up a few good ones.

5% of your market will be reactive that leaves 95% of your market to proactive go find....

I've used Tweet Attacks (the free version) to do the following and unfollowing, and I like it. Rather than using the API, it uses the web browser to make things feel more natural. You can save the tasks to quickly pull them up daily so you don't have to devote much time to it. Open software, load tasks, execute, minimize and do something else. I've not used the pay version, but I've been tempted a few times it was on sale. Definitely worth scoping out.

I'm going to change my screen name to Monday morning quarterback.

Anyway, this does not work unless you're selling marketing stuff to marketers. Most time the people you're following, and, following you are all trying to make money off each other.

    I could be wrong, shrugs.

I see people follow and unfollow me all the time. For months, I'd have the same amount of followers because the rotation on the those who follow and unfollow me were expecting me to reciprocate.

If you try it test, test, test.

    Good Luck

Hi, I have to wonder how responsive the followers are using this follow and unfollow method. A lot of people use auto-follow features and don't actually read tweets. so I think it's good to check if your followers are listening to you once in a while. a poll, survey, ask a question and so on.

Agreed. I have about 2400 followers now and I get a lot of response whenever I tweet anything. I ask questions and get a lot of people chiming in. I deliberately only follow people with reasonably small following counts. I know that if the person is following 1000 tweeters, they'll never see me.

Very practical advice for twitter use. After following 2000 people it is difficult to increase it. To delete them, i do not know exactly who follows me or does not follow. There does not appear any reliable program to delete unfollowers and increase people to be followed.
Fortunately due to daily putting link of interest to people- there is addition of few who follows me. Thanks god and my work and subject of health, which if of prime importance to everybody .

The only problem with this technique is that the followers you get are worth virtually nothing...

They don't know who you are... are not committed to what you have to offer (if they were, they would follow you themselves instead of following - and most of the time - auto following when you follow them)

I use this for scheduling tweets about my blog posts....instead of posting the blog piece once I schedule it to appear once every three months automatically...

I have wanted to market using Twitter, but I hear so many variations. I know that everyone will have different results depending on the methods and strategies that they are utilizing. I am just wondering if it is worth it in the end.

Going to try your methods. Although the method is quite unique one, I thought about it. But as it is very time consuming I left the idea. Hope this time, I can do this to achieve 50,000 or more followers.

Or you can just get the free version of Tweet Attacks.. lol it is just a follow/unfollow tool but it will definitely do what you are talking about.

I have PRO version, but that costs $127. So scroll to the bottom of the site and download the free one if you just need it for follow/unfollowing.

Make sure you use realistic delays and settings too when you run it. Do NOT have the accounts doing anything a human couldn't do in that same amount of time, for example following 500 people in 1 minute. lol

I used TweetAttacks too. The paid version. I followed your strategy (I guess most people do this).
It's working quite good for me too. You can get a lot of followers very quickly.
One more thing I would like to add to your strategy.
Use an autoresponder: when someone follows you on twitter you send them a message (automated) with a greeting and a link to your website. That way you can get a lot more targetted traffic.

      I don't get this.

I can't find anyone in this whole thread saying they're earning jack s*** from their followers.

What exactly is the point in having all these thousands of followers, or did Johnny whack the nail firmly on the head?

No offense to the OP he's not trying to sell stuff but for all the other Twitter follower collectors, what returns are you seeing? I'm genuinely intrigued, this is one of the few discussions here where everyone talks about how many followers they have but never mention if this brings home any money.

On two accounts I have, Twitter won't let me add any more followers. How can I get around that unless I create another account??

Listen To @Whosthatguru You want targeted followers , get tweetattacks from him, it really works. To answer the other question floating around as far as how much you can make , i have a network of 350,000 followers on different accounts and that makes $75-$150 a day twitter is a great source of instant traffic just be careful cuz twitter has been making changes to slow down people like us

I don't wanna sound bitter or discouraging people but Twitter is not a surefire way of generating sales. Twitter is good for people who have already established their website. For people who are just starting out, Twitter is not a good idea unless you are Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga.

nice tips hope they work too.. i am using twiends to get followers but 1 issue i face there that a person follow you today for getting seeds or points will unfollow you next day or after some time...no i am working to resolve this problem and found a solution but still im working on it..just add related interst to you and when they follow you then try to do some good tweets that force or convince them to remain your followers

I think it could have a lot to do with people not actively tracking if they got the purchase based on a tweet they did. I very much doubt you'd make a sale straight from a cpa offer tweet, I could be wrong.

But more often than not i'd say you'd be moving traffic from your thousands of followers (again consider metrics), to a few hundred seeing the offer, to some clicking through to your site and perhaps fewer still signing up to your list or buying your products. One of the great things about twitter is that it has a great possibility to create viral content or make content viral and to spread beyond your initial following.

But to answer Richards question I don't actively track if i get a member because of twitter as I'm not trying to convert a sale out of my tweets. So I would have to say i make 0 from my tweets, but i do convert hundreds to my list which once I launch my site (which is relevant to all twitter users) will hopefully convert into sales.

I'd be curious to see if anyone replies with statistics to prove in the affirmative regarding this.

Quality is what matters to me. I don't care if I only hundreds of followers as long as they are real people and interested on my products or services.

  • Twitter is awesome for directing traffic to a blog. What I do is create a bunch of automated tweets and track which did the best. Each day I trim the poorly performing ones and add new ones to replace them.

Hackbridge, unfollow the people u are already following first.

I unfollow about 250 per day per account, then I follow 230 per day per account.

That way you never run in to any limits.

I'm guessing you are already following 2,000 people - So until you get 2000 people that are following you back, you will need to unfollow before you can follow anyone else.
