Akismet blocked 35,157 spam comments. How about you?

Wow, I don't often think about Akismet and how it is blocking spam from my blog, but today I noticed just how many spam comments it has blocked for me over the years, and I am suddenly very appreciative.

How many spams is Akismet catching for you on your wordpress site?

    Hi John,

    Wow that is crazy!

Askimet is always the first plug-in I activate when setting up a blog

Looks like it has saved you a ton of time and grief!

Luckily, Akismet comes with every new Wordpress install. I never thought HOW useful it really is. It's just there.

It's proabably one of those things that needs to be taken away from us in order for us to fully appreciate it.

It's there - deactivated - and now, if you haven't already signed up previously - and want to use it on anything other than a "non-business personal" blog - it costs you . . . https://akismet.com/signup/

Akismet is great it saved you a ton of time. I wonder how long it would take to manually delete 35, 157 spam comments you would be deleting them for a week

I am thankful that I will never need to know.

But, assuming that you could read a comment, determine that it is spam, and click the spam button, verify it in 30 seconds, it would take 293 hours of working without a break.

So if you worked 8 hours a day at deleting this amount of spam, it would take 36.6 mind numbing days to delete it all.

Do you think linking your comment confirmation with FaceBook would cut down on the comment spam?

I've considered that Mike, and it's a good idea in theory, but I have this blog set up so that anyone can leave a comment without having to register.

It just happened to me today, when I was on Mozilla's site and someone asked a question and I knew the answer to it, but in order for me to post a comment I would have to register and then get an email, and confirm the email, etc. So it wasn't worth the time/effort for me, which means that their site just lost me as a commenter. This is too bad, because the thread was 7 posts long and everyone was missing the point on how to help this woman with Thunderbird.

I'd like to integrate with Facebook to make commenting more personal and allow graphic images of the posters. That would be nice, but I don't want to lock anyone out.

Luckily akismet is doing its job fairly well. I only have to manually remove spam a few times a week.

I love Akismet! First plugin I activate and then let it do it's job which, frankly, I never pay attention to but seems to weed out all kinds of crap. Cool!

    John,

I addressed that issue with one of my blogs, I left BOTH comment options open, so they didn't have to use their Facebook accounts to post. I was kinda rough looking on the blog, but we received a good amount of comments. Point of fact though 99% we posted using the Facebook comment option.

It's blocked a couple of million spam comments for me - but a few still slip through.

    Would be lost without it.

Doesn't it also ban the IP's for the poster as well, making it so that they can't comment on any blog with Akismet activated? I realize that many of those are posted with software using proxies, but damn we have to run out of IPs sometime. Nothing is infinite lol.

I have an anti-scam blog that used to get around 1000 spam comments a day - until I installed a captcha plug-in. Now it only gets 3 or 4 spam comments each day. The captcha hasn't reduced the number of real comments.

Thanx for the tip. I'm fairly new at IM and haven't ran across anyone who mentioned doing this. Do you use wordpress? any plugin in particular you would recommend?

@JoshTara - Yes, I do use Wordpress. I usually use the "Captcha" plug-in. If you go to Add New under plug-ins and type in captcha it's the first on the list.

It's the only one I've used so I can't comment on any of the others, but this one does the job for me.

I considered doing this, but I didn't want to annoy my readers.

Since Akismet does such a good job filtering, I don't need to use a captcha.

Did you try using Akismet first?

I prolly should, but I feel it might block things it shouldn't i guess. I'm the same way with my emails. I still go through the junk folder and check on them all just in case it put something there i still might want. Kinda weird i guess, thats why the captcha seemed like a good option for me.

It sounds like you do not value your time.

Way back when I first started out online I used to check all my emails too, but looking back I wasted countless hours that I could have spent with my family or doing something productive.

If any activity is not productive in life, I remove it. (Productive can be defined as benefiting yourself in a significant way.) So yes, I do consider time with family and playing with my dog as productive, because they benefit me in a significant way. Going through thousands of spam emails do not.

Like you, I don't want to miss any important emails, and when you get 500 - 700 spam emails a day, your spam filter is going to eat some good emails. It's just unavoidable. That is why I set up a support ticket system.

I never miss any important communication using a support ticket system.

Just wanted to say, that I have never heard from anyone that they left a comment on my blog and that akismet deleted it. Besides, you can still check all your spam comments on wordpress if you like to waste your time.

I never would think to put up a WP without askimet. It's one of the best tools on the net as far as I'm concerned. There are other plugins that are similar, but this one is the creme of the crop.

I wish Akismet could filter my email.

I get sooooo many spam emails. Of course I have a lot of email boxes being fetched in Thunderbird, but I get a LOT more spam in email that I ever got in blog comments.

My Spam filter on the server and the addon on Thunderbird combined can't come close to Akismet's filtering.
