Possible to Flip Domains?

Is is possible to flip domains without doing anything? Like if I find a good name that is not registered, register it, and then attempt to sell it the next day, without doing anything, do you think I could make a profit?

For example, I just bought carcrazy yesterday (not selling) which I am suprised was not taken. So if I were to sell it, do you think I can profit?

It's possible, but harder to do with fresh domain registrations. If you can find expired domains, or dropping domains with some age, backlinks and history it makes for a much easier sale.

I have the best luck doing Google searches for related businesses, in your case car related businesses or websites and see if they might have any interest through a professional email. (There are many decent pre-made ones available online.)

The bigger companies you can target for the sale, the more potential money you can make on it. Hope that helps.

What about if I just make a thread on a forum putting my domain up for sale? Less likely someone will buy?

Also is there a golden list of domains expiring soon ?

You can try it, but you will usually get a lot less for it if you are targeting domain resellers. The way to make the most profit off of a domain sale is to target bigger company end users that have deeper pockets.

I mean domains are what $10. If I can even get $20 I'll be a happy camper. I'm pretty new to IM so I'm not expecting an outrageous amount...just looking to turn some profit

Not sure why you are surprised that carcrazy was available. It would make a much better website than it does a domain. You can register a domain and park it on sedo or afternic to attempt to sell it, and that's as close as you'll actually come to selling it without doing anything ... except, that it may not sell or it may take years to sell.

Nothing comes from "not doing anything." Before you register a bunch of domains thinking you're going to get rich, you should study what constitutes a good commercial domain.

How many people are searching for the keyword in your domain? Does the keyword have commercial intent? Clearly, carcrazy does not.

I think it's a catchy domain name, but it's going to be tough to flip these days. I see the demand switching from domains and templates to fully developed and monetized sites with unique and authoritative content. Don't get me wrong - definitely not an expert here, but that what I am seeing today. But hey - it's still a damn cool domain name!

Maybe Kenny Rogers was right ... "you gotta know when to hold'em and when to fold'em."

Listen to Gene above and buy his products, he is an expert in the field.

Rather than blindly registering domains and hoping they are worth something, I would do this:

1- Find some relatively obscure niches that get decent amounts of traffic (these will usually be sub-niches in the broader fields like hobbies, sports, personal development, human relationships, travel, etc.) Find subjects that have raving maniac fans.

2- Start with a "root" keyword and do an "exact match" search using the free Google Adwords tool.

3- Download 800 search terms for the root keyword.

4- Separate the list in half and run the top 400 search terms through a bulk domain name checking tool (like at Godaddy)

5- 1st priority is to find .com domains that have exact match searches of 2,000 or more and are "buying" keywords (those that would have commercial intent).

Most times you may not find any good names, but keep searching as there are some out there. Occasionally you might find several in one search. Obviously, the higher the search volume and the greater the commercial intent, the better.

6- Once you find one domain, register it for less than $10.

7- Now here's the key: Do a search in Google on that keyword and make a list of the domains that pop up on the first 3-5 pages. Visit those sites, join their lists, etc.

8- Contact the owner and casually mention that you own the dot com version of the keyword that brought you to his site. Tell him how many searches a month it gets as well as the domains that you'll be contacting in order to pass on this domain you own to someone who can really make good use of it.

9- Work your way down your domain list starting with the #1 site until you have contacted all the owners.

10- You could do another similar search for a closely related term in the same niche if you don't get a buyer.

I think if you work consistently at doing this, you ought to be able to start turning a name every day after a week or two.

And don't just try to double your money. Highly searched commercial terms are worth anywhere from $300 to $20K if you find yourself in the right position.

By the way, every one of these steps are FREE except actually buying the domain so your total investment is under $10 per name.

If you can't sell a name after trying pretty hard, then park it or put it up for auction. If nothing happens, drop it after a year and don't waste another registration fee.

        Good luck,

        Steve

Yes. I've been doing this full time for the past 7 years, and the market is bigger than ever right now. The challenge is to learn the market and learn how to choose domains that have high market value.

It cracks me up when people say "all the good ones have been taken". The reality is, many of the "good" ones expire every day, because people go out of business, don't need them any more, people die, etc. etc. Between 60,000 and 80,000 domains expire every single day. Most of them I wouldn't register if you paid me. But among them are ALWAYS real gems, worth hundreds, and thousands each.

freshdrop.net is the one I use. Just make sure you check out the right sidebar to set the criteria for the domains, such as how many characters, .com only or other extensions, etc.
