Tumblr blog -- 65k followers, 265k page views/month -- what now?

Hi! I've been lurking this forum for quite a while, but I'm still pretty lost.
In short, I'm looking for what to do next to expand and monetize my blog.

Important information:
  • I have a custom domain name
  • Blog is hosted on Tumblr
  • Blog has about 65,000 followers
  • Blog gets about 265,000 page views a month
  • Blog is photo-oriented but also has text
  • Most of the visitors are female - aged 13-25 - reasonably Internet-savvy
  • Adsense revenue is about $1000/month
  • CPA survey offers bring in about another $1000/month
  • I haven't done much with SEO yet, don't know much about it
  • Blog deals with artsy/funny/interesting clothing (mostly shirts)

I was just wondering what you guys think the next step should be for expanding my Internet presence or for monetizing? Most of my traffic is disinclined to buying things -- they much prefer to look. However, things like survey sites where they're paid for their opinion do very well -- and if any of you could recommend any other good, high-paying CPA survey sites or other CPA offers that are free to complete, that would be great.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, or if you need any more info just let me know!

You certainly got me interested enough to have a second look at Tumblr. Tying into social sites like Facebook could boost traffic, maybe a Facebook game app that fits your theme, the new iFrame option for fan pages lets you show content hosted on your site. Any chance you can invent more involving user participation schemes to increase return traffic to your site, contests of user contributed content, or some rating game where the user who best predicts the general population's rankings wins a prize.

Businesses that have success direct targeting adsense network ads on a particular site will approach the webmaster about direct buying ad space, if you could make the right connection you should be able to beat adsense, have you looked at buysellads?

I just saw a Seth Godin presentation where he used littleMissMatched as an example of a non traditional business model, I noticed they pay 6% commissions for their tween side fashion and furniture that fits your "artsy/funny/interesting clothing" category.

It sounds like you HAVE properly monetized it, or at least have started in a solid direction. Care to point us to the Tumblr so we can have a look at it?

What about guest blogging or having other people guest post on your blog. It's a good start if you want to increase your SEO.

Hi. I'm new but I'll try to brainstorm.

First, I don't know how much you're making per click, but maybe try including CPA marketing or something that will yield more per action.
Second, Try to automate or outsource as much as you can to cut down on the time you spend to get the site going.
    Third. Start another site!

I wish I was you, man. Congrats.

I'm sorry, but I can't post links yet on this forum -- not enough posts.

Ahaha, maybe for the right offer I would consider it. PR4.

I have a Facebook page for it, with about 2500 fans. I have it set up so each Tumblr post I make is automatically posted to the Facebook as well.
I haven't, but I'll go check out buysellads. Could certainly be maybe worth my time! If anyone else were interesting in directly buy adspace, I would be very interested indeed.
And I'd like to re-iterate, they are really disinclined to purchase. I can get something with thousands of clicks and not a single sale on a $15 shirt.

I don't really need any guest bloggers I don't think, but if it would really help SEO, it might be worth it. (I'm still not too sure how SEO works...)

CPA would be good, but I'm not sure which programs. I've looked lots, but I've only found one site that I think would do well with my followers and also pay well -- a survey CPA site. That's where I'm earning most of the CPA money. I could probably send them even more traffic, but I keep wiping out their advertising budget!
I could maybe try outsourcing a little bit, but I've been doing this for about a year and I have a really good feel for my followers and what they like, so I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
Also considered that idea! Only concern was that I didn't want to take time away from this one, which is definitely my cash cow at the moment. I've tried some others, but the return just wasn't worth the effort.

Just to clarify, it's 265k page views, not visitors a month. Visitors are about 72k a month.

I'll look at it and see if it would work well for me! Would be delighted if it did.

You're going to fail. If you're afraid of failure then you do not belong in the Internet Marketing Business. Period.

I might also be interested in doing sponsored posts or something like that -- it would probably be a good way to drive traffic to someone else's Tumblr, site, or business, or just to drum up publicity in general. I'm not sure exactly how to get started on that either, though. Any recommendations/starting points?

I second what blogging pro said.

Also it seems that your Adsense CPM is low, which might be normal if you have lots of returning visitors.

Have you looked at CPM banners? I use Contextweb on a high traffic site of mine that has mostly US visitors. They allow adjustable rates, so I do $2 - $3 CPM and that gets filled 40 - 50% of the time. The remaining traffic is then re routed to another cpm network which fills some, and then re-routed again to adsense which fills the rest. The trick with this is always have your CPM higher than what Adsense pays, that way you make more money as compared to running Adsense alone -- and you do this without increasing the number of ads per page.

I use two Adsense advertising blocks, and the Page RPM averages roughly $5-ish, give or take some. I don't quite understand re-routing.

Mmm, that's something like an eBook, isn't it? I could maybe try that, if enough interested was stirred up. I'm not sure how many I'd be able to sell.
