Should I change hosts?

My host provider is HostBig. My website has been down for 3 hours. I chat with tech support on a weekly basis. My website is down frequently. Usually, when I contact them, they get it up again within few minutes. Today it is different. They said they are having server issues and told me they will have it up in 20min. Three hours later, they said they will have it up in 30min-60min.

I only paid $1 per month for unlimited bandwidth and space for one yr. That is a steal. But as you can see, i guess you get what you pay for. My website was doing pretty well but I thought I lost a lot of traffic bc of this.
Should I change hosts? If so, who is good yet cheap??

        What's on your site - backend -
Is it a CPanel and do you have a Wordpress - then it's easy to move. Youtube has many videos on moving sites. Or pay someone to move it for you. Some hosts offer a free move with new registrations. Try Hostgator, bluehost etc .

For a beginner it would take about an hour or so to move a site to another host.

I've been having a big problem with a host that I signed up with from this forum. My websites are constantly down, and the support is not up to par.

I'm going to go back to the old trustworthy webhosts of either HostGator or Bluehost.

Absolutely, go for reliability. Sometimes a few bucks saving is not that bright. Besides that, hostgator and similar heavy weights usually have great support and very reliable servers and network plus man-power to service their computers, networks and customers.

Cheap Hosting is not good on the internet and in my opinion it's downright bad to see someone offering you cheap hosting.
Cheap hosting is really cheap and it lacks service, reliability and support.

Don't expect a rollsroyce of a service for $1 per month. You better off getting a free blogspot or wordpress site.

Go with one of the big guys that offer cheap hosting not the best but better than what you're getting now. I believe bluehost, hotgator, hostmonster, etc.

Don't waste time with a host if your website goes downseveral times during a week.

First register with new hosting and then make sure your new host is accessible.

Backup your current site to your local computer.

Download it using Filezilla or some other ftp program.

Goto to your new host and upload files using filezilla.
Unzip to public_html (CPANEL users) directory.
Go to your domain registra and change your Nameserver settings for your domain (i.e ns1, ns2 records ...)

and you're almost there. Don't cancel your account with current hosting company until your domain is served from the new hosting companys server. The nameserve records for your domain usually takes anything upto 48hours to replicate itself on the web.

You may want to upload a simple new page to the new hosting account

I usually do this to find if domain settings on webw have been updated to new server.

      Goodluck!

People go with bargain basement hosting get bargain basement service.

Why trust your business to someone offering hosting for $1 a month. Is that what you're valuing your business at?

Get a reliable host, pay more, get service - you and your readers deserve it.

They are on the east coast of the US and are one of the big guys, just did a google search and found that theire reviews are guite good. Goto webhostinggeeks dot com and see for yourself.

If I was looking for a server hosting on the east coast of US I would robably buy their services and test it out with few domains running wordpress.

      Impressive hosting company.

HUB is great hosting! I recommend you go with them. Just do a cPanel backup of your old hosting account and have WebHostingHub's tech support restore it on your new account. Best of luck to you

You most definitely should change web host! As others have said go with Hostgator! They will also help you move your sites over to their servers. How many sites they move for you depends on your plan. If you get the reseller plan, they will move up to 30 sites. You can get the details here HostGator Website Transfers « HostGator.com Support Portal

I actually changed FROM Hostgator due to problems that I was having. I had one hosting account that was great but the second was an absolute nightmare. Sites really slow to load and virtually impossible to use Wordpress as, once logged in, each action would take around 30 seconds plus to load.

HG kept telling me that they couldn't recreate the problems I was experiencing (also kept getting database errors when logged into wordpress).

So, I made a Camtasia video which recorded the screen and showed the problems. I also demonstrated that there was nothing wrong with my internet connection (simply search on Google etc).

Still, nothing improved. So, as I generally take out my hosing around Black Friday for the best offers, I found one with Certified Hosting for $10 for the year. Believing, as Everydayreviews does, that you get what you pay for, it had originally been my intention just to use this as a stop gap whilst I looked around for something else.

Anyway, I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised. Gripes are that there doesn't seem to be any access to Awstats and the back end of the Cpanel looks cheaper than Hostgator's. But, so far, it has been doing really well.

Also, I did wonder about the level of support, But when I sent in a ticket, I received a detailed response within a matter of hours.

I'm not sure what went wrong with my hosting but, I'm wondering if it was something that another host subscriber was doing. Guess that's one of the risks with shared hosting but HG didn't or couldn't sort things out for me!

Definitely change if you're dealing with that kind of downtime... you'll be hard pressed to find any hosts that are any good for a buck a year though so spend a bit more next time

I advice that you change your host provider as soon as you can. If you compute the expense and loss of your website, I think your loss is higher. If your website cannot operate even for just 5 minutes, you are already losing significant amount of traffic. It will eventually affect your web presence on search results because of this problem. Search engines especially Google consider the load time of a website. So it will be safe for you to just leave your current host provider and move on to a better one.
